  1. It is a shame Jim, you just don't get it. I know I did not spend way more than the car was worth and 13 years of my life doing a documented restoration, (DONE BY MYSELF) for a trophey! I have the same enjoyment as you attending National Meets for three clubs, and I also enjoy people showing the same admiration of my car you get at cruise nights.

If you enjoy sitting in burger joints listening to do-wop music good for you, enjoy it! You won't see me there with any of my cars, even the drivers. Some live in the box and some are on the third set of bias ply's.

If you don't enjoy the competition aspect then don't do it, I do not understand your need to be so angry. If you don't enjoy the judging aspect of our hobby then why did you read through this thread and bother to comment? Seems like you are just looking for a fight, no need for it should be a hobby that you enjoy

Getting back to the topic, I still do not think the headlight and battery decision were good ones, and I even have the correct T-3's and repro battery in my driver after all it is restoration.

  2. I just bought a NEW GMC 2500 Crew Cab gas pick-up. The dealer said to wait until after May 1 to see if they offer anything better before I take delivery. I ordered it and it took only three weeks to build. I never want to buy someones headache. I never saw the point of buying a used one.

My collector cars are the only used ones I want.

  3. Do you really think if the workers were paid less the vehicle would be cheaper? No but the profit would be much bigger, Please we are living in the world of on and off $3.00+ a gallon of gas and a $4.00 big mac, they really do not make that much money in the big picture.... stop picking on the people who get up and go to work for a living

Unions brought EVERYONE such benifits as a 40 hour work week, holidays, vacations, and medical insurance, and remember our foreign manufacturers are the children of those who brought us such lovely events like the Batan Death March and the Holocaust. I can still hear my Grandfather saying why would anyone buy anything from those SOB's after Pearl Harbor,

Here is a thought, maybe the doctors get paid too much, and health care is costing way too much. If medical was cheaper so would some of the hourly packages needed to offset medical insurance.

Poor GM, that had a great car with the Pontiac Solstice, they never even tried to sell it

  4. I have used the repro batteries in all of my Chevy's with visable batteries and have had NO PROBLEMS, ever! They last 6-7 years as long as they are maintained, and the charging system is in proper working order.

The problem is "as delivered" is not "as delivered" and that issue just gets dropped. I do not buy the excuse that the judges do not know what the correct T-3 is supposed to be used, they should know it is not a GE or a Westinghouse, same with the battery.

  5. Ken is a fellow Board Member of mine in the Vintage Chevrolet Club of America. Ken or Shirley had spoke with our President Don Williams and Don reported to the VCCA Board that Ken is doing fine and should be out soon.

Ken and I have become very good friends over the years, he and Shirley besides being great people they are very dedicated to the hobby

  6. Well, I can't see how the Chevy Cavalier made the list. I have a 90 wagon with 160K no problems and 20+ to the gallon. A little tight on a long trip, but I can park it anywhere. It is the second one I had an they really are great little cars. I even ponder keeping this one around for awhile.

PS the headliner sags, but then again so do I

  7. Bill,

I have a BW T-10 in my 60 Impala and I have been using SAE 90 for years, I can not imagine that the Studebaker unit is any different internally from the Chevrolet unit.

  8. I was in the air all day traveling, and a lot was said.

I admire the loyalty in defending the system, and as Solid pointed out no one will change their views

However I was at the judging school in Philly and heard loud and clear "THE VEHICLE SHOULD BE AS IT WAS DELEVERED TO THE DEALER WHEN NEW" How does this rule reflect that statement? Incorrect is incorrect, plain and simple. If a part is rare and no one can find it then, they everyone is on the same field. It is not like the part was not around, like a specific tires size that has not been made in 40 years.

    Susan,

Where do you see the AACA being softer around the edges? I have not seen that. It is not good to say regardless, it hurts credabilty.

    Wayne,

Marque clubs can be tougher in certain areas but allowing incorrect headlight to be the same correct is wrong. Again what is wrong with asking the owners to provide documentation? How come a spark plug can command so much value? When not many judges can even see them.

I respect the AACA system, and feel it is one to model after. I know when ever I have a problem with the VCCA system I look and ask to see how the AACA handled it. I just do not want to see one of the better judging systems make a mistake that can hurt them.

I believe this is a mistake, and everytime you allow for a deviation from original it hurts over a period of time, look at the whitewall tire issue mentioned with the model A's. I will write a letter to the powers to be, I know I look into every letter that I get and review it with my committee, I am sure the same will happen.

Solid you must remember that these people do not get paid like politicians and alike so I am sure things will get looked at

I will check in from time to time over the next few days

  9. Thanks for the clarification Susan,

Well I think the AACA standard is compromised. It should say "almost" as if the car was delivered to the dealer/ public" I am the National Judging Chairman for the Vintage Chevrolet Club of America and these problems arise from time to time, but the bottom line is when these compromises are made the better vehicle is the one who gets hurt. Why should the restoration that went the extra mile get hurt by it? Why should thy guy who found the lights, proper belts, and correct style and brand battery get hurt by the owner who did not? Now with this ruling that owner does not even have to bother. I think this was a very bad move, that will hurt in the long run.

The easy solution was to ask the owner to provide the documentation on the headlights if there is a question of the type, that information is out there. But from my experiance many of the judges that I have encountered in (all clubs) know it all so they do not feel the need to ask. At Hershey this year I overheard a judge telling the captain of the team judging my car "it has to be wrong I never saw it before" while looking at the A/C system in my car. While it is rare, it is correct. I then overheard the Captain respond "well it made it this far" I made it a point to make sure that I showed them all of the documentation, otherwise they will never learn, but some people can not think out of the box. People in the system I oversee have the same problem, but lowering the standard is never a good solution

When people put on a foam hat, they assume they now know everything, I am sorry I am drifting off the topic

  10. Check the floor pans for the 58 Chevy, all of the GM models except Pontiac used a body style that would be used by Chevy in 58. The braces under the floor will be a problem to repair

    Good Luck

  11. The Chevy six sounds real good also, when tunned right it sounds deep and throaty like an old Harley.

Here on Long Island there is an event every September at Sagamore Hill (Teddy Roosevelt's Home) a non-judged event open for stock original post-war cars. It brings out about 123-150 cars, and I had the only Chevy there, last year there were only two of us. There had to be at least 15-20 model A's and at least another 10 Fords. They did make a lot of Chevy's just are not that many around.

I was lucky, I found my car in the VCCA monthly magazine, (Generator and Distributor) for $4,200 about 75 miles from my home and the car was never off Long Island. It is a nice driver that needs an interior. I was looking for a early 30's Chevy or Ford. This car was the right price

    Have fun either way

    John
