  1. John, my theory in the severed car photo is that there may have been a flaw at the welds and there is only a couple of bolts and rubber holding the body to the frame.

    Not at that point the body cushions are pretty well forward of the door end of the front fenders, at least a foot. I don't see it. I have done several frame off restos on these "X" frame cars, thee is no distress to the sheet metal, it appears to have been cut maybe for a rescue. As I remember Nader was on a mission also. Maybe a collision with a chop saw?

I also would like to see a better copy of this picture and see more details.

    Yes it was James, I just don't see it without any severe sheet metal damage, and the front "Y" connects under the front seat, there is way too much heavy steel connecting everything together.

    Helfen, If I were driving it every day in this cell phone/text message world we live in I would make the mods, but I am a nut and bolt pureist, and again the column is just one of many problems as seen from the test demonstration, all the collapsible column allows for is an open casket at the funeral wake, the force of your body slamming into the hard steering wheel before hitting the windshield is enough to kill anyone.

    I don't think any of us restored these cars with the anticipation of 50/50 hit, I don't think it would really matter what 59 passenger car was used on that test, the driver would most likley get killed and the car would be a total

  3. In an earlier post there is a photo of the 58 Chevrolet with the nose clip off to the side. I can not see how one of these cars could split at that point and a rather clean cut if you ask me. I think there is more to that photo then we know. I posted a photo of a 62 Chevrolet frame, it is still pretty outboard at the firewall.

    On that crash test it is a head on collision at a rather good rate of speed, with all due respect guys do you really think a heavy bumper would make that much of a difference?

The 348 wieghs about the same as the 235 six, maybe 100 to 150 pound difference, and both the 283 and the 348 are held in to the frame by the exact same frame mounts (engine mounts are different because of overall height) I looked at the video many times and in horror because I have a few of X frame cars. The frame is connected in the front under the engine with a rather large craddle, same frame for all engines. The steering box is mounted to the frame and is forward of the engine, when that corner was impacted, it drove the column back through the crash dummies chest. The open sides of the X frame were to be supported by the rocker panels which were made with several internal channels of steel, the outer rocker over lapped the floor and was welded over that edge. There are four sets of braces two that run from side to side and two that run across the floor to the tunnel, they were trying to use some of the uni-body technology.

    I think the point has been made with this video that driver safety has gone in leaps and bounds since 1959, and as it should have!

    We can only hope that in 2059 if the same test is done they can find 2009 Malibu and people will still be on this site upset that an old 2009 car got destroyed, most of us will be gone is a safe bet lets just hope the hobby lives on

There are enough of these services out there someone had to have used one, what about all of these cars dug up in fields and found in barns, no way they all had paperwork, but then again Ted only those of us in NYS understand the joy of dealing with our DMV, downstate it is really, really, really, screwed up!!!

  6. NYS DMV is filled with people who don't want to be there, so nobody cares... nobody! Remember nobody ever met a person saying I hope I get that job at the DMV.

    I also have a house in Florida and that is where I was going to register it. Last year I registered my 85 Caprice Wagon from New York and they physically check the VIN to the paperwork. The guy who has this car now says I have plates and a title, but it is not a problem untill there is a problem and a police officer looks at the VIN tag.

    This car looks like a Phase III Vega from Motion Performance in Baldwin NY, those cars were sold all over the country. it had most of the stuff those cars came with.... except a clear title

  7. I came across a car that is for sale, everything seemed good, price, and what I was looking for. After further conversations with the owner, I had a few questions before I took the 200 mile drive to look at it, just to confirm it was what it was. So I asked, "I am sure the paperwork is good but I have to ask anyway, any issues I should be aware of"? So now I get "funny you should ask, the car is titled and tagged in the state of *** ****** to me but the numbers on the paperwork do not match the VIN on the dash, and the title says it is a 76 but it is a 71" Before I go any further with this the owner seems like a nice guy and more of a victim this is how he bought it from Michigan on E-Bay, He has owned it for 6 years. He agreed to give me the VIN later this week of the car and I will have it checked to make sure that it is clear. The owner is pretty much disgusted with the whole thing and is willing to drop the price but does not want to spend the money on the title. This car looks like it has been on the dragstrip most of it's existence, and has all of the pre 1975 vintage race stuff still intact, it is pretty cool. it is street legal (barely). Knowing the history I can see how the title became a situation over the years, these type of cars always change hands and seldom have any paperwork when they become legal. The price of the car is under $5,000 and it is turn key running low 11's high 10's

    I checked a few title services on line and it seems around $700 has any of you used one of these services?

    Babe Ruth died in the summer of 48, and he was in pretty bad shape prior to his death. The famous photo of when Babe's number was retired of him standing at home plate with his right hand over his heart during the Star Spangled Banner, he is seen with his left hand resting on a bat. The reason for that was he could not balance himself anymore and did not want anyone to see him with a cane. My father told me the rumor was that the start of the game was delayed because he could not walk out under his own power, and would not use the cane in public. He was America's hero and felt he had to remain as such and even die as such. I guess if FDR could keep his disabilites from the public eye so could he. The bat boy suggested to Babe to use the bat, and he did. The bat boy (I don't have his name handy) denied that he did this and said that the Babe did not need the cane or the bat for support. Nobody could command that much respect today. Over 60 years after his death he is still known by children today. He passed away at the French Hospital now known as the French Apartments http://www.related.com/ourcompany/properties/138/French-Apartments/ located a few blocks from the present Madison Square Garden, still carved the stone work signs remain such as "infermery entrance"

    As you can see I am bit of a Baseball/Yankee History buff.

    I don't think the Babe was doing much driving during the last few years of his life, let alone the last year

  9. Guys my opinion is that most of these magazines instructed their writters to support the advertizers. Remember the Le Car was Motor Trends car of the year. A few posts prior Centurion hit it dead on! It really is not what they were thought of in the time of being new but what the owner thinks of it now. When I look at the signatures of the cars we own we all own very different cars from eash other. Remeber one thing wagons are a hard car to restore in general

I am looking for a 77 Monza Mirage, (these were white with a red interior with aero body panels and a red and blue stripe kit) must be in good shape needing little or no work, will consider 76 - 78 Monza 2+2 Sport Coupe or Spyder, MUST BE 8 CYLINDER PREFER FOUR SPEED, will consider automatic, no 5 speeds. Original unrestored car is the ticket, last part to the collection! Also will consider a 1980 Scorpion version (very rare)I never seen one in person. Thanks, a lot :)

  11. You should join the BCA right away! You never know what will turn up. I had helped my best friend finish his 60 Invicta Estate Wagon that was featured in the BCA magazine about two years ago, the car got some sort of "Best of Award" at the Buick Convention in Boston. It was a rare car with the Bucket Seats and the console. He was loosing his vision as the car was completing and he sold it, the new owner was the one the feature was done on. There was a large amount of spare "wagon" parts that were sold later on to the new owner, (including the side glass). After the car was sold I was storing these parts as we were advertising them for about a year in the BCA magazine, VERY LITTLE INTEREST!!!!!! The best money in a restoration you can spend is club dues with classifieds. You can always run a wanted ad and trust the person who answers it.

    There was A LOT OF PARTS that went as bulk sale to the new owner, I am going to send you a PM with the email of the guy who bought the parts, I don't know if he will sell the glass but you never know.....

    As far as the Buick Pontiac debate I think the Buick parts are cheaper from the front doors forward, When we were hitting Junk Yards in PA 15 years ago every Buick seemed like it was driven in and parked and nobody touched it since the day it came in. The ones that were towed in had the tranny laying on the front seat or in the trunk, that was telling me something about them right away! I did not like the torque tube set up AT ALL!!!! I also had a problem with a valve job that was done, with nonadjustable valves... I located a machienst who made adjustable push rods problem solved. I don't like the starting system on the Buick either. The Ionia Body had all kinds of sloppy seams and work, panels were off alingment. He did a 59 Nomad several years before, the Fisher Body was better by far. Oddly enough he was going to a Pontiac prior to the Buick, but the car had severe frame damage, his fear was locating die cast Pontiac parts and this was 18 years ago. I attached a photo of the Buick before we sold it for your enjoyment. I am a Chevy Guy

  12. I did the same if not better, covered the cost of the trip and bought dinnerfor my buddies every night. I am in the red field north and we saw a lot of traffic all day every day except Saturday, might as well set up in Allentown on that day nobody travels over there with the show going on.

    I think the weather along the east coast might have kept some people home, there was a lot of rain and cold.

  13. I have a 31 which is pretty much the same car as a 30. Change the rear and the transmission fluid, note they use a 600wt gear lube, Lubriplate makes this as well as others. Do not overfill the tranny it takes 1 qt and that is it, overfill it will cause the fluid to run down the tourqe tube into the rear causing that to overfill which can cause the fluid to run down axle tubes and out the 83 year old seals (that really were not that good to begin with) and on to the brake shoes. I am sure you can figure out how I know this..............

    I would also recommend installing a coolant filter with the now rad core no need to clog it up, I was shocked to see what collected there and still does every year.

    I would have had the pump done with the rad out, and keep your eye open for a truck fan they have four blades, that reall keeps things cool.

    I hope your fuel tank is in good shape also only time will tell.

    Look at the brakes mine work real well, stopping is important. it really cant hurt to look at the wireing there is only one fuse for the entire car ............so........

    They are great cars, when I bought mine I was given some great advice, remember "you drive these cars from coast to coast but once you go over forty mph you are looking for trouble"

  14. I really do not want to get into a discussion about the ADA rules, and that is not the point. However keep in mind a person whom is handicapped must have a handicapped card to park in handicapped parking. My Grandfather was a victim of polio and lived in a world where there was no ADA rules. So maybe it erks me a little more than most when I see three 30 something years old guys drinking beer driving a golf cart, claiming to be handicapped. I know we all saw that at one point or another over the last four days

    Here's the key question: are these people insured who drive these vehicles? If so who checks it?

  15. I'm sorry but being YOUNG, FAT, and LAZY is not handicapped, and a large percentage I saw were just that, and I KNOW OF SEVERAL WHO WERE NOT WORKERS WHO WERE DRIVING THEM........... and what's with all of the dogs? Also what is with all of the people riding bikes rather fast?

    No disrespect to those who worked the show and meet they did a great job, but I think it is time to start re-thinking the rules before something really goes bad
