  1. John,

I would like to point out you have yet offer "the kid" any advice or even a "simple answer", so you can keep that invite for your party I really don't want to go now. I don't like to go to parties where people look for a fight.

    Enjoy your weekend

  2. John,

That is your opinion, in my opinion I feel it is part of the whole picture and should be factored in. I the past 40 years I have had several experiences both as a seller, giver, and a buyer on a turnaround transaction in this hobby and every one of them led to a strained relationship and at times even awkward. Might not happen........... but it is a risk worth mentioning to me. Works both ways what if he bought it from a "friend" and found out it had a cracked block that the seller knew of? and gives an answer after several hundred dollars spent to get it to run later " well,,,,you never asked me" The person asking the question brought up the friendship factor and selling it for a profit, if not brought up we would not be discussing this now. It's fine for to tell me to leave the "interpersonal relationship" out and to contact "Dear Abby" and "In your world is no one allowed to buy and sell without being seen as a con artist?

Geeze, you must be fun at parties" What time is the party?

    Back to the orignal question;

When getting involved with a car like this, allways keep in mind: Why would anyone park a car and leave it sit? A large reason is that at the time the car was removed from use there was a needed repair that far exceded the value of the car at that time, and it did not go away sitting there, or it was a combination of many needed repairs, either way expect it

  3. John, I offered advice with a budget, I question if does not know what the car is as far as the make and year, how can he be so sure he's going to buy it and sell it? For a profit non the less. I agree with 59 Pontiac he needs to learn a little more that's all. I'm offereing advice with a realistic budget.

What time is the party? I can get Flight and be there for late afternoon

  4. "Hardly looks ruined to me. Maybe learn a little more about cars before you go trying to turn them for profit."

I don't see anything wrong with 59 Pontiacs post! By being 100% honest and straight forward he is doing is doing this person a HUGE favor.

A person asks an honest question has no idea what the car is at all, but yet they know enough that they think they can turn it over and make a profit. Too many of these "unrealty" TV shows have many people thinking that they can, and we all know it is not that simple.

My advice to the person buying the car is you need a budget to get the car on the road and SAFE for the driver and the other people minding ther own business. first check the paperwork make sure it's clean and transferable

I will give you a little budget so you know what your getting into based on the pictures combined with 20 years of sitting outside, I'm sure I have left a few items out

    ONLY PARTS NO LABOR

Cost of your father friendship with the current owner when he finds out you were looking to take advantage of him

    Battery $100

    Fuel Tank and sender $350

    Hoses, radiator,

    heater core,

    water pump, $300-$750

    Brake system

(it will need everything to be safe)$650-$900

    Tires $600

Fuel pump and Carburator rebuild $300

    Exhaust system and hangers $400

    Belts and tune-up $200

    Fluids, chemicals, supplies, $375

    Totals $4175

    add another misc $500

    shipping misc $200

    Brings it to around $4875

So roughly it will cost about 5 grand to make start, stop, and roll with causing any harm to you or anyone else

Plus it can cost your Father's friendship with the current owner if he thinks you were looking to take advantage of him

  5. I have been following this with great interest, and was reluctant to make a reply. I look at this issue as something different.

The observations of a non-member (who shares the same interest of restoration and preservation) as to what is reflective of "unrestored" car by the clubs evaluation. To the public maybe this aspect of the car is not truely representitive of what many people consider to be original, myself included it is a modern modification. Once that award is on the car for the public to see then it really is a public display of what the club considers it to be. I don't know any history of the poster involved but I don't view it a "stirring the pot" but rather viewed more as a red flag of the inconsistencies in the system, maybe not reflective of what considered unrestored to many in and outside the club. How would we feel if a street rod was shown in a magazine with a senior oval on it from two years ago? And the same observation was brought up? I know evaluating an unrestored car it is not easy and is very seldom cut and dry. It seems to me terms like "restored" have been abused. The stupid unreality TV shows have contributed to that. The few Chip Foose shows I had watched while recouping in bed from some surgery, he did anything but restore a car, but through the term around throughout the show. So I guess the term "unrestored" is subject to the misinterpretation.

I had read a post on this thread where a vehicle had a repaint 40 years ago and certified, which is great. I brought a car to be certified to a Southeast Meet two years ago to be certified. Collision work was performed on a 40 year old car when it was new (2 years old) and was considered to have too much paint work even though the receipts from the original owner from 1978 were offered to be presented. I have to say in all fairness my case was listened to and reviewed, but the nose clip and the door was considered to be too much paint work. So be it, the rules are the rules (sometimes) and can vary from club to club, considering the car was certified in two other national clubs as being unrestored/unrestored in four out of four areas.

What it did for me was make me sit back and realize do I really need to spend thousands and thousands of dollars to travel for a $5.00 brass oval and hope for somebody's acceptance or approval? So I gave up trying to get the first American produced cars with electronic fuel injection running, put all of that back in the box that the owner gave me, and put back the Weber carbs that the original installed when the car was a year old, because it did not perform well in 1976

I also would like to point out I am not big fan of anonimity on these forums, if you are going to say something then stand behind it and don't hide, tht goes for everyone!

I would also like to thank Steve and West for their responces. I understand fully that Board Members can't be sitting here all day addressing things like this, but maybe that contact comunication policy should more visual? We have entered this era where most mail delivered to my home is junk, and most phone calls to my home are telemarketers. Society is programing itself for instant answers. Go to a ball game and look around 80% of the people there are using their phones.

    Have a great day!

  6. I would not get involved! The problem is rather common on those years of full size Chevrolets. If you reapair the frame it will always be a car with a repaired frame. If the frame is rotted how good can the hidden sheetmetal be? Before you replace the frame you will have to "shore up" the body and repair the rot, make sure all of the mount platforms are solid and replace all of the cushions. Unless you have money to burn, it looks like way too much money for a car with minor return. Sounds like this car could take THOUSANDS AND THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS before it is even on the road. True it is a hobby but, none of your fellow hobbiest are giving you the parts for free. While selling the car might not be in the plans now always keep in mind that every car gets sold at one time or another. Good parts car for another 67 with a good frame, start the search, good luck

  7. While returning to NY from picking up a car in Lansing MI, I passed a (don't know the year) Franklin near the PA/Ohio boarder in PA. We stopped for lunch and fuel and headed back on the road only to pass the Franklin again about 200 miles from where we first saw the car. Moving along in the right lane well under 50 mph. The rain was so bad I was debating pulling off with my 2012 Sierra, but this BRAVE hobbiest drove through it! The spray from the trucks make visailty very bad, maybe 100' to 75' at best, and the flow of traffic was still around 75 mph. The car had NY tags so he had a long way to go from where I passed him.

I just had to share this

  8. Chris, I tried to call you this afternoon, I left a message. I'm going out of town with a buddy of mine for a few days, I had bought another car and am going to tie it in and take a look at the Dodge 100th Aniversarry up in Michigan. I won't be able to look at anything untill Friday. Please call me back to remind me. Talk soon

  9. Only 5 hours away from me I'm on Long Island. I have 30 and a 29 complete engines (minus carb generator and starter) that I had bought as spares (just in case) when I had my 31. I sold the car at Hershey last year and the new owner was going to come to pick up the engines and that has never happened. He really did not need them the car ran PERFECT! I tried the early cars, whe I was growing up my Dad had some early six Chevys and figured I would try to diverse my collection, but it just was not for me, The roads are too crowded here to enjoy the car without taking my life in my hands. That is a whole different story,,,,,, anyway

I actually had my 31 on the Cape a few years ago on a VCCA tour that I ran I think it was in 2007. I can't see any visable cracks or evidence of one. I know the cylinder heads can also be an issue on all of the early year six cylinders. I also have a 54 235 here that my father left for me to store 15 years ago before he moved to Florida, (he passed 3 years ago and there is no use for it). I will inspect further over the weekend if you are interested. As I recall they were both "free" (as in movement not in price). I am just looking for a fair price for both of us.

Have a good weekend. I am going away for a few days on Monday, going with buddy of mine to see at the 100th Anniversarry of Dodge next week.

    Have a good weekend

  10. I'm in, this is long overdue! The idea of restoration and preservation has been skewed over the years. Now painting a car a non original color and putting a later model 350 is called restored. While these cars are abundant original as delivered in any condition are less and less to be found. I understand that the VCCA is thinking of selling out and including street rods/modified/lowriders, while if that is your thing that's cool, but it is not mine. Guys the repro market is also living off the new 'resto rods" I guess looks original but it not, just another excuse for cutting up a good car.

I have a diverse collection of V-8 era Chevrolets, and yes even a few four cylinders. I was at a VCCA event last year with my Cosworth Vega, and several "members" asked how come I did not put a V-8 in it? and if they had it they would............ time to move on and find guys with the same interest. Jetsmooth, I will send you a PM so you have my info, Thanks for taking on the effort!

  11. Intersting thread....... I get more comments and looks from my 75 Cosworth Vega the I did with my 31 Chevrolet which I sold at Hershey this year. 70's and 80's are very hard to find parts for (non mechanical) The parts were all on inventory and sold after 7 seven years for scrap. It's hard to believe that a car from 1978 is 35 years old, but if you get a chance to look any of the sale lit for these cars notice the clothes and hair styles of the people shown in them, you will realize its old. I took my 1978 Skyhawk out tonight just to give my 29 year old son a ride to his house, it was his suggestion to take an old car. I asked him which one and he said the "take the Buick." Its older then him, so what is considered old is in the eye of the beholder, as it should be.

We seem to overlook that many of the 50's and 60's car rotted out when they were 2-3 years old, and started burning oil 70,000 miles

Around here in the it's rare to see something on the road older then a 2000.

The question is not what one considers to be antique, but what one considers to be new

  12. Thanks Dave,

I would keep it myself but space is an issue and it is just too nice to leave outside, I even thought of useing it as an everyday car, but again it is just to nice to be using in suburban NYC with tough winters. these cars were prone to rot when new, there is none on this car but I am sure a winter or two of rock salt will bring on the rot. I want to get it to someone who will appreciate a low mileage unrestored car. I have had interest locally but it has been guys looking to put a V-8 in it. It is a perfect candidate for that because it is so solid.

  13. I owned a 2011 2500 gas sierra, I traded it in for 2012 Diesel, the fuel tank on gas trucks from 2005 on are only 28 gallons cap, with a closed box and a heavy 60's car only getting 7.5 to a gallon I was stopping for gas every hour and a half towing. Every time I stopped it added 20 minutes to the trip. Also towing in the NE corridor you are going hit to some sort of traffic (major), do you really want to rock on a clutch? IMHO it can be tense in traffic let alone using a clutch only compounds the situation. I would look for a used GM 2500 WT (work truck) that was fleet owned, always serviced even though the miles are high they were maintained. Good luck,

  14. Hello Everyone,

This is a rare one, when was the last time you saw one? I bought the car for my son over the summer for him to use, no interest, so up for sale it must go. I was thinking of useing the car as an every day for myself but it is too nice to us in surburban NYC, located Glen Cove NY. The car wears an old repaint that is OK not great, has the GM rubber nose fading paint issues, FACTORY A/C, 3.8 V-6 Automatic, PS,PB,TW,TG, Perfect Interior, AM/FM. I would like to get my money back $4300 post-59553-143142254111_thumb.jpgemail me for more picture and my phone number johnmahchv@aol.com

  15. so I spent about 2 hours early that morning scrapping them out for all the useable parts. Finally I now have all the tent parts to repair my own damaged EZ-Up 10x10 tent.

Do have any spare parts for sale? I saw few EZ-Up's in the trash near my spaces in Red Field North, but when the rain let up they were gone. I was down to the last pair of shoes so they had to last.

As far as what my finds were, I did find new owners for my 31 Chevy on Wednesday, and a good time can be made regardless of the weather

  16. This one I am thinking of buying, it rough but has all the stuff that is hard to get if I find another one. The Car is a Chevrolet Monza Mirage, pretty rare to very rare, around 4.000 made, this one is complete but Im better off looking for a solid original 2+2 and biuld someting out of the two, I hvae a feeling Im stuck bringing the paperwork to NY get it registerd ther in my name then take it (paperwork)to Forida to title it....... I don't know

  17. Thanks a lot guys! I guess if this deal smells now, I know it will really stink later. Sometimes you need someone to talk you out of things. I was not sure about the title service and Florida reaction to it. I could get a title for the car for around $750 from the service from the state of Maine, in my name with the VIN on the car, then register it in NYS,another $200 + then Florida....... but with the internet and data bases I had my concerns that it might gat flagged that it was registered in two other states in only a few months.

Paul, I came across another car today located in Florida, that I am going to look at next week with IL paperwork, all clear with an open title to the owner before, any idea how Florida will take to that?
