  1. The second worse lemon I owned new was replaced by the worst lemon. I had an 1988 LTD Ford Crown Victoria wagon. I traded it in when the oil pan was rotting out, to the point that I was afraid to change the oil because the pan looked as if were about to tear in half with pressure on the drain plug. I sold that in 1993 for a Buick Roadmaster Wagon (great looking car!!! but....) It needed a transmission every 35,000 miles at 120,000 miles I had enough. Now I see these cars have a following, but I think it was a BIG POS

    Thanks, I have used them before they did his master.

    Update, owner called today and said he released the line from the wheel cylinder and still had to use a pry bar to move the cylinder back, he is sending his old ones out to apple hydraulic.

    First I would like to thank all of you for your thoughts and advice!

    I spoke with the owner last night and he told me that he pulled the left front drum when everything cooled down and had his daughter apply the brakes just enough to allow the shoes to travel. When the pedal was released the shoes did not return to thier seat. He checked the return springs and they were fine. He had to place a pry bar against the show to bring it in.

    I think also there are two problems going on, he did say he never liked the wheel cylinders they were new but felt they were of poor quality, so he was going to find his old ones and have them sleeved and rebuilt, I think the problem is in the master not releasing.

  4. This one has got me, a friend of mine called me to take a look at his 39 Chrysler because he could not figure it out.

    Problem: After driving about 8-10 miles with minimum use of brakes the car pulls to the left real hard, and the pedal gets real high and hard. Everything was replaced, lines wheel cylinders, hoses and master was rebuilt with a sleeve. (second master the owner thought that was it) When the car is pulled on to a lift the front wheels and the right rear will not move, almost as if they are locked up, left rear is fine and spins free. I had a similar problem years ago and it was due to air so we bleed the system before the test ride and there was air in the system. We went for a ride and the problem was still there. It was real hot from the wheels locking up and the engine temp climbed to 200 degrees.

    The part that puzzles me is that the left rear is fine!

    We could not pull the wheels because they were locked up.

  5. I for one am sick and tired of folks wanting to change the rules so they can win. If your car is good enough, the 10 point spread won't hurt you. If your car isn't good enough, you lose because you didn't deserve the award. That is called life - accept the rules or move on.

    Do you mean just like the battery and headlight rules? Because these are the type of rules that will dilute the quality of the winning vehicles, and the value of the awards. My replies to this thread are not as a "sore looser" my cars are good enough and have won, and I even had won a Bomgardner with one of them in 2007. I feel I am entitled to offer my view as a "winner" just like you.

    What if there is a class that has six cars all around 370, now they all move up, you are not going to tell me that will not dilute the system? But then again if the physical score sheet is never returned, nobody will know the point value.

    I am not concerned about my awards, I earned them already, but we all should be concerend with the people who leave not feeling satisfied with the system because they feel it is unfair. There will always be a certain percentage that will never be happy. There is a way for someone to loose and feel good about it, and telling people to "accept the rules the rules or move on" is far from doing that. This is the type of comment that only reinforces the negative feelings anyone may have. I am sure it was not done intentionally, if I were to be on the loosing side and someone said that to me I do not think I would return, would you?

    FYI, I am not complaining about the 365, I think it is a rather fair cutoff point. While many owners will never have the financial fortitude to acheive a 399 point car, because we all know correctness comes with a price. The owners leave feeling they will never have a shot as long as those high dollar cars are in the class. In some classes there always will be a new restoration "fresh out of the box" so it is only human to feel frustrated. I just think the fairest way to do it is all cars that score 385 and higher move up, and only the highest vehicle(one)if none are above 385 and above 365. This give the owner something to shoot for rather to hope to come within 10 points. Regardless as long as that wording is used people have the impression that they are competing. I am the National Judging Chair for the VCCA and I have heard similar complaints, until we set a point bar. I think the AACA system is very good, but there is always room for improvement.

    I have never had the pleasure to attend a meet out West for the AACA. I have noticed the same with the VCCA that judging is not really important and the classes do not have the same number of vehicles as they do in the East.

    Far from it.

    As long as the highest point car dictates anything or sets the bar, you are compeating against the other cars.

  8. Well that is part of the rule, all cars move up over 975, if there are no cars over 975 and they are over 901 then only the highest point car moves on. In that case it is head to head. We do not have anywhere near the number of cars that the AACA has at a meet. It does not have to be 97.5%, that works for us. Keep in mind we deduct for the incorrect headlights and battery unlike the AACA. What we lack in competition the judging form attempts to make up for. I am the National Judging Chair for the VCCA, and I am pretty proud of our system, it works well for us and we are always making adjustments when needed. We also return the actual form with the deductions, scores, comments and notes to every owner, to help them understand things better. I know that this is a sore subject in the AACA.

  9. There were similar complaints in the Vintage Chevrolet Club of America a few years ago. We installed a threshold (we are on a 1000 point system) and all car scoring 975 or higher move up. It eliminated all of these complaints. Something to consider. I don't care what anyone says, AACA judging is head to head, becasue everything is still based on the highest point car.

  10. I had bought a TIP about 15 years ago, very happy with it! Plastic window and they sell protector shields to go over it. It is the sort of tool you do not want to regret buying, they seldom wear out and cost too much to upgrade. One thing I will say regardless of brand whatever size you might think you need go one size larger, it can never be too big but it sure can be too small!

    I have stopped my subscription to Hemming's (The Old Car Bible years ago) I replaced it with e-bay. I have found everything I needed on e-bay and never got burned ( I guess I am lucky) I have seen the smaller swap meets dwindle into nothing more than a flea market of vendors selling cheap imported tools, wax and tee-shirts. Last year at Hershey I sold (my second year vending) an I did well. I find Hershey to be a social activity that will last for some time. I am sure it will get smaller as we all know there is not large influx of younger enthusiast's. However I think that social connection will always be there. We have made it a reunion and eat dinner at someones space each night, with everyone bringing something to contribute to eat. The local Vintage Chevrolet Club Region hosts a cook out open to all VCCA members from all over the world who attend. It was started a long time ago by the late Ron Flory, with only 10 of us showing up at his home, now there are a few hundred members, at rented hall

    Hershey is a great place to buy or sell heavy items the cost of shipping has really gotten expensive, while e-bay is a great place to sell or buy small or paper items.

    I think e-bay is replacing classified ads and those publications are going to feel the effect. I have been going since 1973 with my Dad and pretty much have gone every year since. My oldest son has been going with me for the past three years (he is 24) and always leaves with saying "next year why don't we..... that is a good sign he is looking forward to going just like I did. While his idea of a collector vehicle is an 85 K-5 blazer, it is still old to him.

    This might seem like a silly question if that is the case then why don't you just become a member? You really do not know what you are missing by not being a member. It is the best bang for your buck in the hobby. Just to clarify, you must be a member to show your car and you must pre-register, but anyone can be a spectator.

    I understand your point much better now, and I have friends who share similar feelings as you, and I don't agree with them either. I do love malts, but hate doo-wop music so as we can see by our taste in music; different strokes for different folks. I have my own opinions about cruise nights and the participants and that is why I do not participate in those type of venues, same for local shows, neither is my idea of fun.
