Going from memory, it's right underneath the distributor...

Do you have a starter shop in town??? If you pull your regulator and generator, they'll usually test them for free...you probably have a bad regulator. You can check the brushes on your generator...they're visible through the back...you may need a flashlight and small mirror. If your gauge doesn't go above horizontal, you aren't charging.
Here's a site I found on google about polarization...there are others.

No problem...glad you found it!

Passenger side rear of the cylinder head...

Make sure you torque the manifold to 25-30 ft. lbs. cold, starting from the inside and alternating bolts until you tighten the outside ones, like you would a head (at least that's how I do it). Drive it for a week, then retorque them cold...I check mine every few months just to be safe.

WHEW! Disaster averted! Good job on the diagnostics!

Congrats to all the Buicktown people...WONDERFUL show today...we had a great time.

Here's my '53's sweepspear...

I may be off here, and since I wasn't sure I didn't want to chime in. Buick switched to a twin-turbine dynaflow in '53, ad '53 was the last year of the straight eight...I BELIEVE that the earlier Dynaflow will not bolt up with the '53 engine. Go to buicks.net and post in the straught 8 section...if I'm wrong, someone there might know. Good luck!

Be very careful when adjusting the idle mixture screws on old Strombergs...they "mar" very easily...they're thin and seem very soft. It's easy to put a scratch in them. I guess that's why they're included in new carb rebuild kits. With the engine at operating temp and the choke open, LIGHTLY turn them to the right until they JUST stop or the engine starts to die. Then start backing out until there is no noticeable improvement in the way it idles..THEN, turn the screw back in 1/4 turn. Done, at least until the formulaters change the gas blend or it gets hotter or colder...

I don't think there were any differences in the two...only possible problem is if one was from a stick and the other from a Dynaflow...I don't believe the Dynaflow crank had a boss for the pilot bushing, but I'm going on memory here...Also, your Special is pushing 4000 lbs. if not exceeding it with fluids in it.

I counted 6, and they become more closely spaced toward the rear of the car.

Good advice above...When I bought mine I had to clean all of the sockets out very well, but that wouldn't cause the brake light problem...the only thing is that the brake lights light up the outer 4 lights...

Thank you sir!

Hello,
What day of the Nationals will be the best for seeing Buicks? What's the best car show day?...I'll probably only come down for one of the days, and I just wanted to know which one is best. Thanks!

Ed...that's me to a tee. I'm never going to win any awards, and I don't care to either. I just LOVE seeing all the cars...I love EVERYTHING...GMs, Fords, Chryslers, Independents, foreign makes...it never gets old. So I guess I'm not there to mingle...I start looking around, and when I'm done, I pack up the car and leave. For many, it is about the "camaraderie," but I've always been about the machines. Maybe I AM weird.

There are seals inside the oil pump to keep oil out of the pump area. If these are bad, the oil will bleed past these drain holes. Many leak a little even if the car has a newer pump. If the engine has a ton of blowby it will be worse...get a fuel pump rebuild kit or a rebuilt fuel pump and you should be OK...they don't make new pumps for straight 8s... Good luck!

I think you'll find the gas volatility problem is your problem. I tied the exhaust heat riser shut (so no heat to the carb) and lowered my float about 1/8 inch. It helped but it still starts hard hot. Not 15 minutes, but it takes 3-10 seconds to start sometimes.

There was a guy from Wisconsin back in '03 that showed his unbelievable '49 Riv at Meadowbrook. It was a maroon color. I don't remember his name but it was gorgeous...maybe look back in the programs if possible...

Hey all,
I need a new master cylinder in my '53 Special. I rekitted mine and honed it out 3 years ago but it's leaking out the rear seal again...anybody have a good experience anywhere? Anybody have a local machine shop hone and sleeve theirs? Any help is, as always, appreciated...

The '53 Dynaflow had a 3.6...

Agreed...maybe a crack in the head? Head gasket? Have you checked for bubbling in the anti-freeze? Is it running cleanly? Any missing or very white plugs?

Hello,
I just got a new thermostatic spring and anti-rattle spring for the exhaust manifold heat valve on my '53 Special. I'm missing the anti-rattle spring bracket that bolts to the exhaust flange...anybody have one laying around that they can measure for me? I can easily fabricate one, I'd just like to know the size of it. Thanks!

I'm always curious about the cars he highlights; they're usually not my taste. Spend a little less time on them, and maybe get 7 or 8 into an episode!
