  1. We had freezing rain the other day here in Ohio and they put the liquid salt down, going to drive the sunliner to Daytona Beach over thanksgiving to a car show and then it will be put away for the winter and hope to not have to deal with snow on the way home. Was hoping to figure out the gas mileage on my 37 Chevy p/u since I got the speedo close to accurate but will probably next spring too.

  2. If you are worried about point deductions do not put a PCV system on it,when my 55 sunliner gets a Y block again its going to to get the early 60s factory PCV system and have the original road draft tube blocked off and be on there just to look original. It had a different road draft tube then the 57 and later Y blocks where it is on the block down low up front and I can use both and the PCV system will be behind the carb and out of sight and one would have to go looking to find it.

  3. Nothing new but thinking on downsizing a little by selling my 66 ford truck and bronco and finding a non running 65 galaxie 2 door and using the 4 door for parts since its really not worth fixing the body. Have not been down your way lately,I just do not get out like I did before and stay local but will be heading to Florida in a few weeks.

There is a tool that will pull them out, it works with a slide hammer.

Not sure what effect it would have on the bore, but I have used it on mushroomed lifters and reassembled with success.

I do not think that tool would have worked on that 454 or might have damaged the bores since they were seriously mushroomed,I am thinking the GM garage that put the first cam in could not get them out and just reused them. All 16 lifters were wore down at least 1/8 and one was almost to the internal spring.

That proves that cars HAVE improved from the 1950's and 1960's.  There has been much advancement made on rustproofing since that time, and on many cars, the two-stage paint job often still shines like new, (not counting cars where it has peeled off).  Mechanically, they have improved as well,  not to mention, the lubricants and seals used on them.   Because of that, a lot of them are still presentable daily drivers, and their 'half-used-bar-of-soap' look keeps their design from looking dated.

Yes, it is difficult getting my head wrapped around seeing a rather pristine original 1988 Chevette at a local car show regularly, in addition to a 1986 Dodge Aries that also appears regularly.  It is then I have to remind myself these 80's cars are now 30 years old!!

Maybe a little but they still get very rusty,my 89 crown vic that I bought about 11 years ago is about gone and probably would have been off the road sooner but I think it was only driven 10,000 miles in its first 18 years. The rocker panels were starting to go when I bought it but could have been from mice nests and this car had been rust proofed,my 95 F150 had had all the spring brackets replaced and has holes in the frame but since its 23 years old it would have outlasted most trucks made in the 60s driven in salt in the winter.

Great post and well written!  I'm 46 and a woman and have vented about this topic for some time!  I was at the AACA National meet in Mobile this past weekend and while at the Rountable discussions, I commented on how I was treated at the Virginia Beach National meet 3 years ago and it wasn't well treatment I received!  Another woman commented that my 1989 Suburban was "just another used car".  My response... they are ALL used cars!  Of Course, she didn't like that comment, but it made me so angry that I wrote a letter to the editor of the AACA Magazine, West Peterson, about the treatment of new members and what vehicles they enjoy.  If this car hobby is to grow, everyone has to be welcomed, whether they own a vehicle or not, or if it's a Toyota or a truck!

As for grumpy old people, I meet them all the time when I'm on a judging team usually.... usually they warm up to me and we are all good friends at the end of the day :)  Give them a chance too ;-)

Some people are having a hard time with late 80s vehicles being old enough to show, when you think of old cars late 80s just seem too new and I am still using them for daily drivers. That thought pops in my mind at first when I see them at shows then I have to tell myself that they are getting up there in age.

  7. When I changed the trans fluid at what I thought was 170.000 miles the plug was still in the pan so I was the first to service the trans,if it had 170,000 miles on the original fluid it would have been black so with most of the paint still on the frame when I bought it along with the mint interior it dawned on me that it only had 10,000 and the dealer I got it from did not know it.

  8. At 10,000 miles I should have preserved it and will never let anyone drive my vehicles for long periods of time again, its funny after she bought it from me and had to pay for the repairs it did not get driven as hard like when I was buying the parts. She now has car payments and has to take care of it,she did think she blew it up but was timing ping and a reset of the timing fixed it but with 110,000 miles now I will be looking into a timing chain.

  9. About 11 years ago I purchased a 89 Crown vic that was advertised at having 110,000 miles, the interior did not look like it was sat in but the body looked like it was 18 years old and since it had a heated windshield it was going to be my winter car. About a week after I got it a brake line blew I had it on stands to replace the line and noticed it still had most of the paint on the frame but I figured it did not come from the rust belt,a girlfriend at the time bugged me to let her drive it since it got better gas mileage then her truck so it got wrecked and she ran it into the ground.  I did make some money on this car, paid 2500 for it and got paid 2400 for it when it got hit and then she offered me 1500 for it and I let it go and then she gave it back to me 3 years later. I figured out it only had 10,000 original miles on it when I bought it but sat in the weather and if I knew what I know now back then I would had the body repaired and repainted and sat it under a car port and used it for a good car in good weather only and just drove my beater truck,I think I can get another winter out of it before the frame goes and when I find another body to put the drivetrain in it will not be used in the winter again.
