  1. It seems to be one small problem after another. Today the door lock cylinder came out of the handle. Anyone know how they are secured??? Also is there a special tool for getting the inside door and window cranks off??? Shouldn't be much more that can go wrong. Now just need a cop to to do the VIN verification and I can start driving it.
  2. Anyone know what size packing material I need for my 32 66s? Has anyone replaced theirs with sealed bearings? If so do you have the bearing #
  3. Hi everyone. I rebuilt my steering box for my 48 Lincoln and ordered all the parts from Bob Boos which had them to me in 3 days. After replacing the bearings and bushings it didnt look like there were any adjustments besides the screw on the top which gets rid of the play on the sector shaft. The half turn of dead space at the wheel was taken up with the spacer gaskets, What they do is make space for the bottom bearing race to move which gives you the dead space at the steering wheel. At first I tried 3 spacers plus the gasket, still gave me half a turn at the wheel, I then tried just the gasket and had no play at all but steering was tight So I added one shim gasket and have a little less than 4" of play at the wheel and just to see what happened I added one more shim and got 1/4 turn of free play so went back to just one shim and the gasket. easy to do when off the car. Tried it on the one on my car and couldnt get the bottom bolt next to the frame out without loosening the bolt on the frame. I hope this helps someone in the furture with their steering problems. By the way when I took the box apart I thought I had just the gasket, no shims but after letting the gasket sit out for a day in the sun the gasket started drying up and all the shims popped loose. I had 3 extra shims in my extra box.
  4. There is a company called Renu that has a sealer that can hold up to todays gas with all even pure ethanol, A little pricey but worth it if you plan on keeping the car forever. I just had the tank on my 32 done but it needed to be rebuilt due to the last owner putting sealer in it without cleaning the rust out first. Renu fixed it all and sealed it inside and out with a warranty for as long as I own it. Renu is on the East coast and West coast but very few locations.
  5. I have had this 70 challenger R/T for 19 years. Original 383 4 bbl R/T. Engine is a 440 6 pack now, manual shift Automatic, interior done 5 years ago complete front end rebuild with poly graphite bushings in Feb.all new tie rod ends and ball joints, 1" torsion bars, 1 1/8" sway bar. 3.23 sure grip with stock HD springs and 3/4" sway bar. Was completely restored 16 years ago. Asking 30,000 OBO
  6. After putting the steering box together with the new style seals and putting 80 wt oil in it to test for leaks I found one seaping from the top stud. Will use a little sealer on the stud and should be fine. It sure steers easier with the light weight oil in there.
  7. I have one, but after I used it for reference to restore my 48 I was told the manual was not correct and I needed to get the new manual. So make sure when you order one that you find out who is judging at the shows and which manual they are using.
  8. Thanks guys. but with the new style seals there should be no leaking at all as tight as they fit. I have been wrong before but I have to see for myself. In the mean time I will be looking for some of the Penrite steering box lube. I have never seen it out here on the west coast. 90-140wt is the heaviest I could find without using grease. I have club meeting tonight with the HCCA so will ask around and see what others are using.
  9. I cut a piece of rubber to fit the bottom at the throttle shaft pass through and found a new seal that fits the pitman arm shaft perfect. its a napa part #13529 These new seals should keep the 90-140 wt gear oil inside without leaking. Lucky for me the bronze bushings are near perfect and no wear on the gears.
  10. Thank You Bob. That was what I was looking for, will make it much eaiser to find the right ones at the swap meets.
  11. Kits are available just about any NAPA store. I have rebuilt BB1s for a 1915 Overland and a 1914 Hudson and the cars run much better and better mileage with the BB1s. The Hudson is running a 1 1/2" Venturi and so is the Overland.
  12. Bob Boos has everything to rebuild one of these boxes for those of you who might be in need of parts to rebuild your own.
  13. I have this one torn apart, had 2 bad seals, Now to get it all cleaned up and get the new seals . I will try some thicker lube when I put it together. It was packed with grease but none was on the gears.
  14. Well just when I thought everything was fixed and ready to go back together I filled the steering box and the 120 wt, gear oil just leaked right out. The shop manual I have doesnt go into detail on how to repair it so I will ask the buick faithful for some help. Are there any seals in these boxes? Book doesnt show any. This is the last thing I have to fix besides installing a set of trippe lights on the front. Looking forward to driving it soon. Anyone here going to Hot August Nights in Reno this year? I will be up there with my 48 Lincoln Conv. coupe.
  15. Thanks guys. I have a # for a place called Straight Line Steering in San Jose, Ca. that rebuilds older steering boxes. If I can ever get them to answer their phone I will let you know what I find out about the rest of the bearings/bushings. This is a good start. The Franklin club had new worm gears made a while ago and they are suppose to work in the Lincoln Gemmer 2 boxes as that is what they used. Will check with a couple of friends who own Franklins and find out.
  16. The 32 model 66s I just bought has the 18" wire wheels with an opening for the hub cap that measures 7" across and the hub caps I have which is only 2 measure 8 1/4" to their outside edge. Can anyone here give me the measurements for the 80 & 90 series just in case I have the wrong wheels on my car.
  17. The 42 bumpers are the same as the 46-48 if I am not mistaken, Try Merv Adkins. I only know one guy around here with a 42 connie conv. and he might have some spare bumpers. Problem is I havent telked with him for 8 years. I will look for his # and let you know when I find out anything.
  18. Thanks Dave. The 28-29 style is what I am looking for, It matches the headlight buckets on the 32 Buick 60 series the best and is the right size to not look out of place with the tail lights. Have a few large swap meets coming up soon so will take a look there. Thanks.
  19. Thanks Peecher. Now to find some new bearings the upper shaft bronze bearings are worn enough to give side to side play.
  20. Repo would work, they just want to sell them in pairs.
  21. Anyone know of a kit to rebuild the 48 Lincoln steering box or the part #s for all the parts. I have so much play at the wheel it feels like piloting a ship. Have it torn down and everything is loose but not worn enough to replace. Tried taking the shims out of the sector gear plate but there wasn't any just a gasket.
  22. 29-30 just looking for one to use for a back up light on a 32 buick coupe.
  23. I am looking for one nice model A cowl light. Please PM me with what you have and a price. Thanks
  24. would you happen to have the choke cable and oil can and mount for the 32? looking for hub caps also for a 60 series
  25. I did get in touch with Mac Blair. He is a big help with this car. Found out it was an early production car #199 off the line. And I now know where the vin # is. They have it registered with the engine #. Will have to get that corrected. Still waiting for my gas tank to come out of the renew shop and the radiator to get done. So in the mean time I am fixing a bunch of little things and doing some modifacations to get more leg room. Hope to have it on the road by the end of this month.
