  1. Here is the Packard with the judging team in the rear of the photo. Steve M is clearly identifiable in the photo......notice the hundred dollar bills being tucked into the pockets of the judges......NOW I AM IN TROUBLE!

     

    I'm hidden behind Manny Dragone two people over from Steve. The class was full of fantastic cars that any one of which  could have taken a first place..........and several were Best of Show contenders in any normal show or club event. Unless yo have actually participated in one of the "Big Three" it's hard to explain. Many years ago I was at Meadowbrook, and was thrilled that I would "win the class" with my car.........wasn't much competition. There were two empty slots that the cars weren't coming.........well, last minute, they got put on a plane from Europe, and showed up just in time for judging.........I got third, and rightfully so. Such is the way when you play with the Big Dogs!

  2. Amelia doesn’t call out cars like many other shows. First in class, and then 2end and third are “Amelia” awards. Place a car on the field, and see how “easy” it is to get an award. It’s a huge show.....and most people go home empty handed. I see stunning cars get absolutely nothing..........our class of eight cars was probably the most difficult of all of them. Every car was 100 points. After fifty years of club and show activities, there was a car I had never seen before. A Murphy bodied Hudson, and the restoration was magnificent. We were parked next to it. Have a car? Try and get a parking space on the grass at Pebble or Amelia..........chances are less than one percent. There is a reason they say it’s an honor just to be asked to show a car. The Hispano class was also asinine...........a fantastic selection, and any car in the class would rightfully be called a masterpiece. My choice for best of show didn’t cut it..........it did win, but it didn’t take BOS. It was a fantastic event, great fun, and it felt good to be back to the show circuit. Lots of new friends stopped by to say hello......many from this site. I haven’t been to a better show.........and I have been to them all.

Of actual cars I have seen in person, 1905 Packard and 1904 Pierce Arrow Great Arrow come to mind as the first real cars........the first real luxury car......hands down, no debate 1907 Pierce Arrow 65 horsepower “66”. Not a special, not a race car. Just a killer over the top production car............nothing  anywhere comes close....nothing!

However the radiator and fenders appear earlier than Jack's roadster I was thinking of. The headlamps do not look like what I usually see on Packards.

  5. Sorry for the delayed answer to so many questions, time, heat, people, distractions, lack of time, and a dozen other things interfere with answering right away.

     

    The car is a 1930 Cadillac V-16 Fleetwood Roadster. Somewhere around 90 were built, and most of the ones you see today are modern replicas, or 8-16 body swaps. There are about ten pure, unmolested examples extant........our powder blue and Tokyo ivory is one of the better known and considered a pure example. History from new, all original mechanicals and body, ect, ect, ect. After purchasing the car a few years ago, we researched it and found it was one of the “Tuxedo V-16 Cars” that were specials done in a crazy black and white paint scheme..........fender tops black, bottoms were white! And more such unusual paint schemes with unusual offsets. We plan on putting it back to the way it left the factory.......after we show it some more, and put LOTS of miles on it. It runs great, and is a dream to drive. The car has a fantastic future on the show circuit......after we put some dings, scratches, and wear on it. 👍

  6. Update: I have to stop talking about all my drinking. Seems a bunch of generous people from this website like to stop bye, have a quick tour of the car, and then they give me a bottle of booze. It’s 12 noon and I have four bottles in front of me, but it’s better than a pre-frontal lobotomy. 😎

     

    i’ll be swimming in bourbon for the next two months. 👍

    And your point is????? Having driven tens of thousands of miles in pre war cars from 1897 to 1942......I have never had a issue with points I couldn’t fix on the side of the road.......and then, it only has occurred twice......on cars all over 80 years old that weren’t properly serviced. Ever try and fix a diode on the side of the road.....or a Hall effect sensor? My 1917 will start with a totally dead battery.....or with it removed. How’s that work with electronic ignition? Hell, just buy a Tesla and then you don’t need gas, or 99 percent of the other moving parts.

  8. All car shows are fun......and different. The big three concours all have different ways of doing things and displaying cars. They are all high stress if your competing. I usually apologize ahead of time to family and friends as things get tense before and during judging. Afterwards it’s not too bad......until the ribbons start to come out. Overall it’s just car people doing their thing.

  10. By the way, Steve M, our exalted leader of all things AACA bumped into me in the hallway. I need to be nice to him, as he is judging our class. That said, he didn’t buy me a drink or dinner.........and I’m fairly certain the ebb and flow is in my favor for several meals and a half dozen drinks. If he doesn’t catch up with me this week......In two weeks I’ll be in his office in Hershey collecting. 😎
