1. Howard, I kid you not...on St. Patty's Day my mother would dress me in Orange. When I complained that the kids would pinch me, she told me to pinch them back...harder!!
2. Also check out the CLC website. They have a list of specialists to answer your questions online..via email or phone. Welcome to the club!!! I would love to see pictures of your '67. Since you are registered on the AACA forum., you can use their Photo Post section...just click on the Collectable Automobile Photo Post inthe upper left of your screen. You can see my cars there under Lykeios.
3. The grill badge should have a large washer and wing nut with a long stem but if not, you can find the peices at any hardware store. Plaques and framed awards should go on the wall Try to avoid using wire, like picture wire, because it rusts, and can scratch the chrome on the grill. I attached my CLC badge to the '47 (with its huge egg crate grill) using a very long stem and adhesive felt pads to protect the chrome.
4. Mick, I don't own a '67 but I had a '69 Olds 98 and I was able to get parts from Kanter, USAPartsSupply, CaddyDaddy, Cholakian Enterprises (sometimes or he might know where to go), then the local CLC members would know of local yards that might specialize in Cadillacs. We have one in Denver that is ONLY Cadillac...if you let me know what you need, I could check there or get the number for you. Any of the above are on the web. Hope that helps!
5. I think you make a good and valid point, Richard. I feel much the same as stated in my 'Joy.." thread. And I think the impact is more immediate on the public. Seeing what normally is a museum piece trundeling down to the Safeway or sitting at the stop light, puts it in perspective. Shows and Tours are educational, and a lot of fun for both participants and spectators, serving well to preserve the automotive history that made this country basically what it is today. Watching "Horatio's Ride" I was filled with the same sense of wonder and excitement that I get when I throw caution to the wind and head out for a trip in my car. It is wonderful.
6. I am looking for the right mask on the vent control that has OFF, FOG and ICE on it. I have the original left mask. I would gladly accept both as a set.
7. Dave, I'll bet the car looks wonderful! Your icon picture does it justice. I hope to do mine the same way, a little at a time. Then have a nicely detailed engine to look at. Then it will be time to learn how to do the wood grain on the interior.
8. Maybe not banning this time, Howard, but I will definitely make you eat at Austin's in Ft. Collins for that remark!
9. I give rides to anyone who wants to sit and feel what a real 1940s car was like when it was rumbling around Sedgewick, Kansas. Even fully restored, the car would be used and driven. As it is I am just one of many who have cared for it, some better, some worse, over the last 55 years. It makes me feel good to be a part of it, and the hobby in general!
10. It is true. It means "Doesn't go" and was an impediment to sales in Mexico. I think they renamed it a Caballero or some such. I had a Chinese friend ( a Chien no less from Beijing) who told me they LOVED the Roadrunner show at University. Beep Beep means ... FY in gutteral Manderin.
11. Great! Thanks, Jim! I hope to get to this real soon.
12. Should I pull all the plug wires, hoses and the like or can I simply tape them up? I need to pull the air manifold and carb. The water pump should be the same color as the engine but the generator is black. From what I can tell the whole engine compartment is black. Does anyone know if this is true? The pictures I have are not that clear to me. Someone painted the manifold a terrible bright, bileous green. I rather like the original khaki green which can still be seen on the engine and oil cap. Oh and you mentioned primer...should I prime the engine? What would the primer be needed for if not the engine?
13. Hi Jolly John, Here is their number : Call toll-free, 9 am to 4 pm pacific time - Monday thru Friday about your specialized color needs. We're here to help you find it, buy it and get ready to spray it! 14. If I may put my two cents in, I really like grill cloissone...eh...badges (French elludes me ). Something that is nicely enameled and of quality can be mounted in a large frame with the others (the eternal optimist here), a shadow box, or attached to the grill! The grill badge is a much nicer thing than window stickers. Anyway it might be nice to have a variety for each position and class. What do you think?
15. Mine is quite loud. Fortunately for me or I would never remember to turn it off! It works wonders when the gas starts to purcolate. Now all I have to do is wrap the gas lines.
16. I was hoping that was the case...Im a little shy at times. Can't you tell? When and where is the next CCCA Grand NAtional event? I need to plan way in advance.
17. Next year I would like to make at least one Grand National ... either the AACA, CCCA or CLC...and just be a part of it. That would be great fun. Now my son, 18 and full of beans, has decided we need to learn how to paint. He is exceptionally good at this sort of thing. That would mean we could afford to paint our cars. Now that interests me a great deal. I could paint Dutch the original Belton Poly Blue!
18. Well, Howard, I can see that would make a difference! If I were to try and take the Dutchman to Hershey, I would either have to arrange for it to be hauled or drive it over a week. I think I will just pass.
19. Hi John, I have one that is behind the tank in my '47 Cadillac, and it is 6 volt. It has a filter and works by a toggle switch under the dashboard. I don't know where the guy got it but his name is John Faust at www.Honestjohn.com. He could tell you where to get it.
20. I thought I would bring this back to the top, and interject that I have found out the original color for the car. (Oh sure I could have checked the body style plate but that would have been cheating!) It is Belton Blue Poly. A darkish blue that is really not terribly pretty. Very traditional though. I prefer the color of the car currently. I call it China Blue but I have no idea what it is. (see my icon) So I was thinking of getting a scan of the current blue and having some touchup paint made for it. Then I could handle the scrapes and chips without repainting. Besides the car is a road car and I would hate like heck to spend $7000 on a new paint job only to have it chipped by the rocks and gravel on Colorado roads. In the AACA Tech forum, I posted a question on detailing the engine : in situ or ex machina? Any ideas? What are your experiences?
21. My thoughts exactly...and no I will drive the Dutchman. I was thinking of a nice place in the middle of town, more people to see the beauties. Its called...eh I cannot recall at the moment but its a nice restaurant. I will get the name and directions soon. Oh I finally discovered the TRUE paint color for my car...Belton Blue Poly. Nice, eh? Too bad it would cost $7000 to do it and then I would be skeert to drive it! Not worth it in my book!
22. Richard, I have had a similar experience in Houston, although not a Concours quality show. The big show of the year had some 125 cars, some classics, some not. My '47 Caddy was set next to a '57 Cadillac Eldorado Brougham (my dream car), with a '48 Lincoln in garnet red in front of it. As you might expect, my car is a little rough, the chrome is bruised and faded at points, rusty on the bumpers, and generally in survivor condition. The paint is bright blue, not original for the period, but the interior is immaculate. I use the car. I repaired it to be used. I never wanted to show it but to tour and maybe show it so people could see what a real operating car of the period might look like. I did not win a thing. The trailer queens did that, although I will say the '57 CEB won and is used. I had to face it. My car would need an estimated $14000 of work at least to get it to the point of winning ANYTHING. But so what? I LOVE this car. I will in time detail the engine and have pieces rechromed, mostly those in the most need, but only to protect the original pieces. Whereever possible I have kept the original parts. I might, might I say, redo the original in its original broadcloth, but even that seems a bit much since the grey blue cotton/rayon limo cloth with blue piping works. It looks good and it is comfortable. What is important for me is that a 1947 Cadillac 6269 sedan can be seen running around the Denver area most any day, being driven and thoroughly enjoyed. Is it preservation? I think so. Because were someone to buy it, or more like, were my son to decide to show it, he could bring it to top shape without too much effort. Well....only money right? The Dutchman, as I call it, is a part of me. I have considered selling him because of my disability but never do it. Not really. I love the old barge, and it gives me something nothing else in the world seems to, a real sense of pure joy. I like pure breds. I love those glistening trailer queens, but in the end I think I will take my slightly used, dented blue Cadillac, thank you. He has soul. Smoke, oil leaks and all. He has soul.
23. Time for all of the Colorado DF'ers to pull up the socks, and fire up the jalopies for another ho-down! Shall we meet in Severance or Ft. Collins this time? My turn to treat Howard! What do you all (I REFUSE to say Ya'll) say? (I guess I COULD say Youse since I grew up in Philly)
24. LOL! My grandmother's pediatrist was Dr. Boyle. She called him The Butcher.
25. I have asked this question before on the CLC forum and got some very good answers, but I thought I would see what you all had to say. I want to detain my 1947 flat head. At this point I cannot afford to have the engine rebuilt. SO how can you paint it and detail the engine compartment with it in place? Or should you? What have you all done and how did you do it?
