2. Congratulations, Peter, on your new position! It is both a testiment to you, your work, and that of your mentor.
3. Thanks, Glenn! I know that had to hurt! Seriously, I think Jonathan will need this link before the year is out. I am searching now for a '72 fisher body manual for him so he has at least the shop manual for the car and its body components. I just finished finding those books for my '47 and '77. By the way, how are you honeys doing? Oh and best of holiday wishes to you, your good wife and family!!
4. Wonderful site, John. Well thought out and succinct with enough pictures to illustrate your points. Congratulations! On the loading speed, I did not see that it was any slower than any other site using dial up. One suggestion... on the links where you have an elipse, you might consider item balloons where the whole the text shows when you rest your cursor on it. Great job!
5. Bill, that is really nice work. This will be an award winner yet...and a beautiful car to drive. I have an affinity for the '50 Buick. Its nice to one being restored so nicely! Good work!!
6. Mine is sensitive enough to see tail lights so it will only fire when there are no lights on the road, including street lights. The chances of having the highbeams on are pretty small then except out in the country. The sensitivity is turned up on the unit itself, then I adjust the distance control so on coming cars trigger the unit at a greater distance. So far it works like a champ. I considered buying that autronic eye meter but chose not to spend the money this time. I really don't have too many gadgets yet, just books. I am collecting things as I go along. I am sure Brian has a lot more stuff. Next acquisition is a 1972 Fisher Body Shop Manual for my son's car. He intends to restore it this coming year so he will need it.
7. I have been surprised to find how many GM cars had the feature! As I indicated before, I love mine, and while I rarely need highbeams, it is nice to have when I do. On the window...I finally got mine fixed. The motor gave out so now it works flawlessly!!! Just like the rest of the car. Still it isn't the '47 but I am happy with it. Nice thing about the '47, the only gadgets it has are a few dash lights and a vaccuum antenna (which does not work), the radio and the clock. I find I am just as happy with a quality car like that. Remember the '55 Cadillac series 62 coupe? No power windows...very simple but still one eligant car. So yes I love gadgets, but I think over all the quality luxury car is best represented by its still being here, on the road, and looking like a million bucks! (for a whole lot less!)
8. Happy Thanksgiving to one and all! May your day bring you joy.
9. This is sad news indeed. My sincerest condolensces to Helen and the rest of the family. The club, and the world has lost a good man.
10. Hey Rich! I was an online tech and admin for several software companies including Microsloth so if you all could use a home based tech.... <hint hint> MCP (one course shy of MCSE), CLP, and a whole bunch of mainframe certificates! LOL All totally useless now!
11. Sorry to hear it finally happened, John. I will be in touch.
12. Craig, I did nothing whatever to the engine. I put in 87 to 92 octane unleaded and every other tank add a non-lead substitute. I do not have knocking, get reasonable gas mileage (15 mpg highway) and it gets up and runs....I actually had it over 100 last summer. I did not do it for long and I would not recommend it but I was happy with the response. I cruise regularly at 65-70 with no problems. When I do have the engine rebuilt, I will put in hardened valve seats but I want to keep it mostly original. Besides...these cars all ran on unleaded unless the owner specifically used Gulf NoKnock or the original Ethel gas. They had non-lead substitutes in the 30s so I would not worry too much about it. All the lead gives you is better lubrication at the molecular level and keeps the valves from knocking. I don't know about towing but I should think it would not hurt the engine. These are very hardy cars.
13. I was born in Missouri and my family is from Minnesota...I guess I inherited a very warm system cause I walk out in 34 degree (Fahrenheit) weather in a t-shirt and jeans most comfortably. I only really get cold or chilled below 32 degrees. Snow feels warm...and I love the bright white, and the smell of a norther. So how did I end up in Texas for over 26 years??? Good question...job, family etc. Good times by and large...I was a post grad at SMU and loved it. Houston was very good to me...but the heat and humidity were death. Anything over 75 and I get sick. If I'm caught out in the sun, I get heat stroke in less than an hour...more exposure leaves me hospitalized...so I stayed in all the time. Desert heat is easier to take but just as detrimental. It is why I had to leave Archaeology as a career...heat stroke, kidney failure...all that good stuff and a pity too. I loved it and was good at it. Computers are indoors so being in Texas was OK. WTMI. That is why I love the white stuff. Today is bright, clear and crisp with snow on the ground...a perfect day. I have thought of moving farther north...like Canada to get closer to the weather I like best, mean of 62 and open tundra. Hmmmmm. Happy Holidays to Everyone! I hope your times with family and friends bring you joy and great satisfaction. Life is truly wonderful. Oh and to keep to the topic....I used to write from work in off times when the users were quiet in their cages, but as time and health failed, I have taken to writing on the net as well as poetry and fiction at home from my iBook. So I am here posting or monitoring most of the time. Occasionally I do other things but that is my main work. I keep busy.
14. Hey that's great, Craig! I will tell you, my '47 sat for over 30 years in a barn and runs beautifully. The transmission is very strong. The reason? It was well built and solid. I would not count it out. Of course, I do not know your car and haven't seen it. Putting a crate engine in and modern transmission is always an option, but I would take a look at rebuilding the flathead 346 cid V-8....I have a great deal of respect and fondness for mine. Just a thought.
15. Oh no accident (I assume you are being facitious), they sold it so my mother could come back here to see if her Cancer has returned. If all is well next spring, they are going back to buy another flat and stay there. I believe my Dad will remain in England after she passes on. No this was simply the best time to divest themselves of the property in preparation for another possible fight with the Big C. Mom is doing very well though so we have high hopes for the next few years. There is a great deal to be thankful for in my family. I will be very happy to have them home.
16. This weekend we are having our first major snow of the season! I will be shoveling out the car and staying indoors where it is warm with a fire and hot tea! I LOVE WINTER AND SNOW!
17. Well the McGrews are spread out. My parents are in London finishing the sale on their flat before coming home to Colorado on December 5th so they will enjoy the holiday quietly there. My brother, Rod, is having a whole army of friends in at their home in Topanga Canyon, CA. And here, I will be joining my son and ex at a friends home for a huge feast. It is sure to be feastive. Then the following day, I will be at a special dinner for my son's 19th birthday. It is going to be a weekend of feasts!! Happy Thanksgiving to one and all...best wishes and regards to everyone from the McGrews.
18. Thank you, PWN. I am really interested in this because it seems to be such a simple and obvious answer to a multitude of problems. I would happily convert all my cars to something like this to help the ecology and our economy. I may start using it once the engine is rebuilt in the '47...I will change all fuel lines etc to handle it. That would be too cool.
19. My question is similar....where can you get it, how will it work in older cars like pre-50s engines? Is anyone doing studies on this? And why has the oil companies not jumped on the band wagon? This would be excellent for the American farmer and the country as a whole...so why are they not telling us about it? I would really like to know what is going on with this.
20. Oh there are all sorts of related material...wiring plans and bullitens but honestly I do not know what they are called off the top of my head. Sounds like you are on your way to gathering all the fun stuff! I found a period (40's) electric shaver by remington for the 110v and the 6v systems with a car adapter. It still has all the booklets and stuff....wouldn't that be fun? I was bidding on a stop light prizm too but it was a little costly so I let it go. I have a picknic tray for the car and I am looking for other little silly things for the '47 Cadillac.
21. Hey! Congrats, Mick! I love eBay for that. I found another book...a beautifully maintained NOS owner's manual for the '47. I have the original for the '77. I am glad you found the manuals you needed, and knowing eBay, you got them at a great price!
22. The real tragedy is that with this car, you don't even have to know how to park...just use the computer to do it for you. People are getting so mentally lazy they don't want to bother to learn how to drive, navigate or manage their vehicles. I wonder how well most would do parallel parking my queen mary of a 1947 Cad? Its like airbags and ABS...marvels of technology for a safer highway...until the idiot behind you at the DMV tells his friend how he doesn't care how fast he drives...he has ABS and Airbags so the worst that happens is he gets a new car!
23. I would like to know who is being intolerant of you. Generally things run very smoothly, and while it is not a perfect world we do our level best to provide an equal playing field. That includes you and Charlton. I have mostly enjoyed your posts as they tend to be insightful, intelligent and thought provoking. However, if you want total unanimity to say and do as you wish, then I guess there will be times when we disagree. I can only speak for myself, as I am not an apologist for the group, and to that end I leave the majority of posts alone unless they clearly violate the perimeters of the forum as laid down by the organization. As I said, all are welcome here who want to use and enjoy the forum for its intended use. Most political diatribes and religious comments are not acceptable because the members of the forum find such to be unacceptable. There was a time when we did not discuss these subjects in general company, leaving it for friends and associates in venues meant for such discussions. This is common sense and common courtesy. If you feel that you are being unfairly delt with then you should speak with a representative of the AACA. It bothers me that this is still an issue. On the other hand, as long as the discussions are adult, and polite, I see no reason to remove any post. I reserve the right to move posts that are not generally auto related to the R&R section. And I will only remove posts that violate the basic rules that have been published previously. Beyond that, I cannot see how I can be more fair. You have brought up some good points in this post. Thank you for your insight.

Glass

Howard, I am thinking of writing an article on Glass in the automotive industry...a brief history and what it meant for modern cars...so your response was enlightening. Where else might I go to find good sources on this subject? You know...deadlines...deadlines and more deadlines.
25. I read the article. You have to have an online subscription (free) to get the Times online. Personally I prefer to read the paper but I get the Times online to see what the highlights are for the day. I do not know if the Chinese have it right or not. In China you have no choice in the matter. Fortunately they are opening up a little but I dare say you would not be able to own our gas guzzling antiques as they would be against the Revolution and examples of decadent western bourgoises liberalism. If you want 50 miles per gallon, then you all will have to give up what you like and buy the hybrid cars. It will probably come to that anyway. And Charlton, there is no reason to be bellicose and defensive. If you dislike the forum and the people who make it available so much that you have to constantly push every limit, perhaps you should find something else to do with your down time. I cannot see why anyone would willingly go where they are obviously unhappy. Its just a thought. You are welcome anytime here as far as I am concerned.
