  1. What I don't understand is somebody taking a perfectly good driving car and turning it into something that is a horrible road car. I have a friend that bought a beautiful '69 Camaro. It was a sweet driver with small block V8 power. He yanked the small block and in went a fire breathing 454 big block that was so souped up it required aviation fuel to run it. It idled at about 1000+ rpm and although it was amazingly fast it was barely road-worthy. This is the type of thing I hate to see and I totally don't understand. I had a super nice '64 Falcon Futura 2 door hardtop for a few years. Fun little car still running it's factory 260 2bbl and 4-speed. I wish I had a dollar for everybody that looked at it and said, "boy, that car would make a great gasser!". Why are people so quick to take a perfectly good car and turn it into something like that?
  2. I may get flamed here a little but I understand the attraction of having an old car with modern power, comfort and drivability. Most would say it's the best of both worlds but to me to appreciate an antique car is not just to appreciate the aesthetics. I appreciate the way it drives, stops, shifts, and even smells. I appreciate the technology of the day. We all know the limitations of many older vehicles regarding power, brakes, steering and the lack of the most appreciated option of all, air conditioning. How many of us actually avoid driving our old cars because of these limitations? I am not advocating upgrading our antique cars for more power, drivability and comfort, I'm just saying I understand it.
  3. I also want to thank you for taking the time out of each busy day to post updates. I think we all appreciate reading of one another's adventures and threads like this help bring us all along even if not in person. Prior to this thread I knew very little about the great race. I have learned a lot through your detailed posts.
  4. I'm not sure why free wheeling was a big deal back in the day, possibly drivers thought they were saving on fuel? Some vehicles in the 30's came from the factory with a freewheeling option.
  5. Well I didn't buy the B/W unit, thought it was a little pricey. I did end up with a small trailer load of model A parts including this unusual rear banjo/torque tube/driveshaft. Tag says "Scotch Free Roller -Trojan Auto Products". Not big enough to be an overdrive so must be some sort of aftermarket free wheeling device. I've never seen another like it on Model A Ford.
  6. 5 on 5.5" bolt pattern. 3 7/8" center hole and 11" drum cover diameter.
  7. The is estate is a mans that collected and restored Model A Fords. I suppose one could be adapted to work?
  8. Not sure exactly what I'm looking for but I don't think so.
  9. I'm going to go look at an estate tomorrow possibly to purchase some parts. Among the pile is supposed to be a Borg Warner overdrive such as the one pictured. Anyone know much about these? -thanks in advance
  10. Highway 40 Blues -Ricky Skaggs "it's a long way to Richmond, rolling north on 95" Modern Day Bonnie and Clyde -Travis Tritt
  11. This sounds like a great time and I wish I could attend. Helping my older brother move into his new home that weekend. 😟 There will be some grumbling I'm sure but the exposure to the AACA will be a positive thing I think. 👍
  12. Model A Fords with a bump in compression, cam and carb can pretty easily be bumped up from 40 to 65 or more horsepower. Add an overdrive and they'll scoot along surprisingly well. Since I see a stock looing Model A muffler/exhaust underneath I'm guessing he's running the original 4 cylinder engine. I'd also guess he's got an overdrive to achieve 70+ mph. Ask him if you get a chance please.
  13. Looks like you could get one thru Hudson-Essex.
  14. So back in the day; teens, twenties, thirties, if you owned a car and wanted a trunk were they purely aftermarket accessories that you ordered from Sears and Roebuck or Western Auto? They came in so many shapes and sizes so I suppose you had to order a rack and a trunk to fit your specific make and model? Did any manufacturers include them as an option? Could you get them thru your local dealership? This has the makings of an excellent research project for Walt while he is recovering. 😁
  15. I have a few racks too plus I forgot I had this large Ajax trunk. 14 1/2" W x 30" H x 48" long.
  16. 2nd photo. Curved back. 15" W at bottom, 11" W at top, 19" H, 34" long. 3rd photo. Curved back. 11" W at bottom, 8 1/2" W at top, 18" H, 38" long 4th photo. straight back. 14" W, 14" H, 36" long 5th photo. straight back. 11" W, 18" H, 34" long. "U.S." badge on top.
  17. These are obviously 40 spoke so maybe not Mopar?
  18. I have some early automobile trunks. I have no idea what cars they fit. Two have curved backs and are larger at the bottom. One has "US" on the lid. I assume that these were accessories that fit only certain models? I can post dimensions tomorrow. I'd like to identify cards these go to if possible.
  19. Well, a friend of mine locally happened to have TWO late 1931 gas tanks. One of them was a perfect, apparently unused one that looked brand new inside and out. He didn't want to part with that one. The other has light surface rust inside and out but should be fine once cleaned and sealed. It's MUCH, MUCH better than the one on the car. I couldn't argue with the price, $100 and that included two quarts of Bill Hirsch Sealer and a pint of tank etch! I also have a new top bow on the way so making progress, a little at a time.
  20. I have to be with Ed on this one. I can see where the challenge and competition would be fun for some and I think that's great if that's what you enjoy. I'm way too laid back for that sort of a challenge. The photos Ed posted just now cruising thru the forest or along the coast, left arm resting on the door sill, taking in the scenery, smelling the fresh air and making stops at my leisure.......................Ahhhhhh!! I wish I was there instead of here in my office!!!
