  1. ok. no luck at that shop... next option, called driveline specialties in Texas.  Brent was helpful in the fact that I have no option in new parts. suggested looking for olds yolk... My 2 questions for someone reading this are, #1 are the splines the same profile as pictured ? (vintage 49-56) and #2 what are the bearing caps measuring ?

53 pontiac bearings measured 1". obsolete, hence the reason for upgrade. shaft measures at 1.172"

I am hoping that the Olds bearings measure at 1.062 (current available for 1310 series slipjoint and the spline profile and measurements are the same as 53 pontiac (1.172)

Any knowledge on this will help me in pursuing parts from salvage yards and hopefully prevent wasted $$ and skinned knuckles removing wrong / incompatible parts.... thanks John

  2. need some machine work... output shaft has some wear from out of balance driveshaft. probably some spray weld and recut... then match grind splines to fit slip yoke...... also need to get a new tail shaft bushing.

Just doing my part to keep the local economy going !!!   John

  3. Hello all... as the title implies, I have a driveshaft dilema. After a successful summer of driving of approximately 3500 miles on numerous trips, I had developed a vibration in the driveline. As suspected, ujoints...

Long story made short, I had to have a new driveshaft made. (UNOBTAINIUM U JOINTS)

Spicer 1310 slipjoint has square splines, pontiac has tapered splines on output shaft. This just came about as I only picked up the driveshaft friday. I will be calling the shop monday, but I thought I might get some insight from the forum members early. Anyone ever have this issue, or can you point me in the right direction ?  I'm hoping it's just a matter of finding the proper slipjoint yoke as the builder overlooked this 'minor' measurement...... 4. I'm looking for a straight 8 and 3speed manual transmission for a 53 Pontiac. 49-54 should be the same. driveshaft also if available. close to Hershey. transmission is a 5 bolt top cover unit. these were built by buick, for pontiac. that being said, a pre-55 buick 3 speed manual transmission is the same. tailcone is different length but top cover must be 5 bolt, not 6 bolt.. Will travel within reason for one piece or all.  thanks John

  5. Hello and thanks to all who have responded to my many questions over the years.. I  am happy to report that a recent trip to Wisconsin from Pennsylvania was a success. This was my first 'official' showing of my 53 Pontiac Chieftain Deluxe 4 door...  Another member is sharing his adventures to the same outing, from the other coast, so I won't take that from him.

I must also mention that this was my first attempt at a restoration of this magnitude. (8 years). It has been a fun and rewarding experience in many ways.

I guess what I am saying in part, to anyone, is get those cars out there and drive them...!!  That's why we fix them in the first place....

Again, thanks to all who have contributed. Your knowledge is invaluable and I am forever grateful.

They are never really 'finished' are they?...... just the beginning of another journey !!!. John

  7. looks like a project I started with. I'm in the same mindset. like to work on stuff... beer and patience will reward you with a nice car in the end.. I  have eight years in mine so far...... (a 53 4 door also).... in the end, the best part is being able to tell all 'I fixed it myself'.... good luck, lots of knowledge right here.. just ask !!!! John
