  1. Corvette Central has the same item for $34.95 and they have a much better reputation than Ecklers. Many in the Corvette community will not deal with them due to poor customer service.
  2. I did a Harbor Freight run during their extended Black Friday sale and bought this small plastic ammo box. It is a perfect size for my extra bottle of engine oil and transmission fluid. I think I will buy another one to use as my first aid box later on. Right now I have my tools and first aid items combined. I may buy one of their larger, metal ammo boxes for spare parts too.
  3. I recently did mine. Use a Felpro gasket set as it is a quality product. Be sure to clean the gasket surface of both the block and manifold before installing the new ones. Use a quality sealant such as The Right Stuff where the cork gaskets meet the longer gaskets. This is a good time to replace the gaskets for the EGR and the fuel pressure regulator and to flush and fill your radiator. Take lots of pictures so you will know how to put things back together and be sure to bag and tag the smaller parts that you remove.
  4. One of the first things I did on my 88 when I bought it about 3 years ago was to purchase a set of used hood struts from member Jim here on the Forum. They have worked well so far. Be sure that you install the hardware on the new ones exactly the same way as the old ones or you will have a bulge in the hood where they attach.
  5. I braved the crowds at the local Wal Mart Friday afternoon and bought a car cover for my 88 Reatta. I found a Budge brand, size 3 although I neglected to see if it was on sale or not. $46, which I thought was a decent price. I was only looking for a dust cover as the desert dirt and sand coats everything in this area of Arizona. I was pleasantly surprised to find that this cover is water resistant and breathable. It seems to be quite sturdy and has strong elastic around the opening. I have owned a couple of car covers over the years for other collectible cars but found this one to be sturdier than those. I am very satisfied with it.
  6. We are headed for The Railroad Pass Casino in Las Vegas tomorrow. Turkey dinner at the buffet and probably lose some money at the slots. Our church's pastor just moved here from Paradise, California. We pray that those who lost everything there will find some things to be thankful for.
  7. I owned several C4 Corvettes over the years and they all had the VATS system. One of the cures for a crank, no start was to use the spare key. If that did not work then the other cure was to liberally coat the key with alcohol and repeatedly put it in and pull it out of the lock cylinder. After so many years of use the cylinder gets gummed up and does not recognize the key's pellet. Most of the time this would cure the problem. I did have an 87 vert where this did not work. I bought a new ignition cylinder from Corvette Central along with a new key. This did not work either. I then got a used VATS control module from a Corvette salvage yard. The module's code matched the pellet on the key. This worked. Other folks would bypass the VATS system completely. My manual is for my 88 so it is no help to you either.
  8. Is it cold where the car is located? It is possible that the nylon gear was lubed with heavy grease. Or they may not have been lubed at all.
  9. Whew, that is not an easy shot to get for a chubby old man! If one of my smaller grandkids were here I would enlist their help. Best I can do here:
  10. More info from the FSM. I did find a diagram of the parking brake assembly and it looks like the release is a vacuum system (?).
  11. Here are pics from my assembly manual. There is no diagram that I can find. I will go out to my 88 Reatta and take couple of pics and post them here next.
  12. Do a You Tube search for Riviera instrument cluster removal. The video I found for the 90-93 Riv shows how to remove the light switch.
  13. I have been a passenger in a C7 Corvette at Gingerman. It is a fun course and scared the crap out of me. I vote that you run straight pipes straight up out of the hood! Be safe and shoot a video for us??
  14. Red letter day for my 88. I came back from a 20 min drive, placed a clean cardboard under the car and came out a few hours later to discover NO LEAKS! She has almost 119,000 miles now and had sat quite a bit before I owned her. So the gaskets were dried out and most of them leaked. I have now replaced all gaskets except the heads and power steering. Took me a while but it is worth it! One reason that it took me 3 years to do all this is due to the "while I'm in there" factor. I had used grease remover and a power wash a couple of times to clean the block, etc. It is now a pleasure to walk into the garage and not smell burnt oil.
  15. My goodness. I went out to the garage while my wife watched the news. I placed a fresh cardboard under the car, opened the hood and shone my big LED flashlight down on the cardboard to watch for a drip. After about 5 minutes I found the leak. It was coming from the lower radiator hose!!!!! I had refilled the radiator with Prestone 50/50 after I had replaced the intake manifold gasket. While attempting to burp the system with the radiator cap off and after a huge spill I had topped it off with distilled water. This diluted the mix so it is now a very light yellow. That is why I had not recognized the drips on the white paper as coolant. I must have put the lower hose on and not tightened it very well as it took about 2 full turns to snug it down. So far, no leaks but I will have to take it for a test drive Saturday to make sure. I will also have to drain what is in the radiator and top it off with more Prestone 50/50 so that I will be protected this Arizona winter. And yes, it does get into the 20s a couple of nights in February each year.
  16. 1. That is what I am trying to find out. I ordered a bottle of GM dye and purchased a black light bulb yesterday so I will soon find out. 2. My 88 Reatta/Riviera assembly manual that the previous owner included with my car.
  17. I just took my grease gun apart only to find that I did not remove the foil seal from one end of the cartridge :(:(
  18. I tried the white paper trick and found that my small leak under the right front part of the car is power steering fluid. I did a lube, filter and oil change last night but could not see my leak. I will put some dye in the system tomorrow and look for it with a black light. My small grease gun failed me while I was attempting the lube. Grrrrr Here is some info on servicing the 88 Reatta. I also am posting the diagram for the power steering system.
  19. I just want to see what the condition of the undercarriage is. Probably check over the exhaust system, see if there is any damage to anything, maybe check out the rubber mounts. This would be much more convenient than jacking up each end and schooching my old, chubby arthritic body underneath.
  20. I posted this in the Corvette Forum I belong to. I will post the info if anyone in Tuscon replies.
