  1. Pete,

I too think the Buick tach looks the best. That sounds about right. I asked a guy that had one for sale what the diameter of the back was and he said 3 3/8". I have heard the Buick tachs can be pricey and somewhat hard to find. True or not I don't know. I have not looked into them that much as of yet. As an alternative I have also been looking at the Olds tachs from the same period. They are pretty sharp and seem to be reasonably priced. Thanks for the info.

  2. Hi,

I am looking for a wire wheel cover center medallion. I need the 1963 black and silver tri-shield medallion that will work with the 4-hole spinner with no cracks and/or scratches. I am also looking for the metal vacuum line that went from the brake booster to the front of the intake manifold and the brass tee that it goes into. If you have any of these items that you would be willing to sell please PM me. Thanks.

  3. I just got the mystery solved today. Now that the "mystery" is solved I am feeling a little foolish as to how simple the solution was to my supposed mystery part. I had never seen one of these in the flesh except for the one I own. I got my armrest all refurbished and back together. Once I had it together I started to fool with it to see how it actually opened and closed. Why I never fooled with it when I first got it I do not know. I got it to open to the full up position and much to my surprise there was the mystery piece. It is actually the part of the bottom of the armrest mechanism. The mechanism sits completely flat when it is in the down position and the front portion hinges up when the armrest is raised to the full up position. The mechanism worked totally differently than I had anticipated and I am still not sure yet how I am getting it to the up position. I'm sure it will be much more apparent once I get it anchored in the car.

  4. My car has the rear armrest option and has the vertical piece. The armrest "sits" on the vertical piece when in the up position (like your photo).

Thank you for your input. I have another question: Is that piece attached to the armrest mechanism or is it inserted after the armrest is raised to the up position? Thanks.

  5. Hi,

I just purchased a rear center armrest to put into my 1963 Riv. In doing some research on this forum I ran across a picture of an armrest in the "up" position. This picture shows a vertical piece under the front of the armrest down to the metal base that sits on the hump. The armrest that I received did not have this part included. Can someone please tell me if this piece is part of the actual armrest set up and should this have been included with the armrest I purchased? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

  6. Hi,

I have decided to put a rear center armrest in my 1963. I realize that this is not on option on the 1963 but, I like its functionality and look. I rode all the way back from the ROA show in Colorado Springs in the back seat of my 1963. My brother-in-law accompanies me on trips like that and I like to let him drive as his parents had a 1963 Riv and he has an appreciation of these cars. I can drive it the rest of the year. We had 4 guys in my car on the way back and between myself and the other rear passenger there was a soft sided cooler between us that worked well as a faux center armrest between us. That probably sold me on an armrest.

I know that I will have drill holes in the lower seat frame to attach the armrest. I am wondering if there is anyone out there that has done this to their 1963? If so, are there any tips and/or advice that would be helpful before I go ahead and tackle this project? It seems pretty straightforward but, any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I would also give a shout out to Clark's Corvair. I ordered their rear center armrest upholstery. I thought it to be very reasonably priced and looks great. They not only give you the armrest cover but, they also give you the piece that covers the padded area behind the armrest already stitched and cut for size and fit. That will save time, money and a trip back and forth to the upholstery shop. If you are planning to redo an armrest this is the way to go.

  7. Hi,

I am looking for some items for my 1963 Riviera. I am looking for a rear bumper guard, a rechrome, very nice original or a good undented core suitable for rechroming. I am also looking for the metal vacuum line that runs from the brake booster, along the valve cover to the front of the intake manifold, the brass tee that it connects to on the intake manifold and the check valve that goes on the other end of the tee. My car does not currently have a check valve so a brass nipple that would screw into the other end in lieu of the check valve to run vacuum from there would be OK. If anyone has any of these things that they would be willing to sell please let me know. Thanks.

  8. Thank you. I'm sorry, I don't know what 4-way stretch is. I followed Pete Lempert's thread entitled "63 trunk vinyl covered cardboard". He tells in step by step detail how to cover the trunk cardboard with vinyl. He also gives the name of an inexpensive source for the vinyl.

  9. Pat, you are spot on with "Highway Star". Love that song. It's on my MP3 as is another one of my favorites that has been mentioned "Green Onions". Too many good one's for me to pick just one. I have also liked "Rockin' Down the Highway" by the Doobie Brothers as one to get me in the cruising mood.

  10. Hi,

I have a 63. When I was ready to get my exhaust system replaced I was given the advice by a knowledgeable Riv guy to have my exhaust guys use the 65 GS exhaust system pattern when they bent pipes as there are fewer bends and easier to install. They did that with no problems. Looks and works great. I am not sure about the exhaust hanger locations.

  11. Ed,

Yes you can. I followed Jim Cannons post on this thread: http://forums.aaca.org/topic/221099-63-riviera-dual-master-conversion-help/?hl=%2Bdual+%2Bmaster+%2Bcylinder#entry1145797 or search dual master cylinder if the link doesn't work and it is entitled: 63 Riviera Dual Master Conversion Help.....started by Kaber. Jim lists all of the parts you need from Inline Tube for the conversion including the fittings for the lines to the master cylinder that fit the 3/16" line. I did not order the master cylinder fittings as the shop that did mine just got them locally or made up the lines with the fittings themselves, I don't remember which. The picture I have isn't that great but my lines are both the 3/16".

  12. Pete,

In the past I had a 1963 Pontiac Grand Prix and a 1963 Pontiac Tempest convertible both of which came with seat belts from the factory. I had the same dilemma as you. I wanted to stay stock but, cringed at the price it would take to refurbish the originals. I ended up getting repros and was very happy with those. I was just in contact with Ssnake Oyl recently as I was contemplating a selt belt change in my Riviera. I was quoted $90.00 per passenger for rewebbing. If you want the exact webbing as was used originally it will cost you even more as that webbing is no longer made and is at a premium. Ssnake Oyl said that Corvette owners that are sticklers for authenticity will pay big bucks to get this webbing. They also do rechroming/refurbishing for the metal portions of the belts which adds to the price. I decided to stay with my repro belts on my Riv. In my opinion I didn't think the large cost to get to original seat belts was worth the small impact it had on the look of the car. I thought my money could be better spent elsewhere on the car. I did not have a set of original belts though, like you do. I had to add the price of getting the original belts also, which really skewed the cost. Both sets of belts that were installed at the factory and removed from my 1963 Pontiacs looked exactly like the picture Ed supplied, buckle and webbing. I'm sorry I don't have any pictures and I sold all of my Pontiac stuff after I bought my Riv. You might want to check other places than OPGI for belts. I have gotten sets of belts for 4 different 1963 GM cars from J.C. Whitney at prices much lower than OPGI or other reproduction parts vendors. I was very happy with the belts and they looked no different than ones sold by anyone else. I know I have seen them recently on other websites while I was looking for seat belt retractors for less than OPGI. I hope this helps.

  13. Hi,

I recently purchased a Riviera sign from a local gentleman. He has been and still is a collector of automobilia for decades focusing mainly on Buick. I believe him to be quite knowledgeable. He believed this to be what was left of a sign that would have been backlit and on display at a Buick dealership. This seems to me to be a reasonable assumption. Someone over the years had slopped paint on the back which would have ruined it as far as using it again as a backlit sign. Fortunately, the paint was latex and I was able to get it off. The sign looks very nice now. I did find out by accident, almost with disastrous results, that the painted letters/Riv symbol were watercolor. I found this to be very interesting and surprised that as such, the lettering had survived all these years. What I am wondering is if anyone has any knowledge of this type of sign such as: Was it actually a dealer sign? What year(s) might it have been used? What type of case might it have had surrounding it? The sign is 12 1/2" tall, 23 1/2" across the bottom and 29 1/2" across the top. Any info/background that anyone can furnish would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

  14. Thanks to all that responded. I measured the nipple on the lock mechanism. That measured out as 1/8"OD. I found hose sold by Summit Racing that has 7/64" ID. The price seemed to me pretty reasonable for 50 feet. That is the length they sell. You can find it on e-bay or on their website. Since I did buy 50 feet, if anyone is looking for vacuum line to do their own remote trunk release, I will have extra to sell. Thanks.
