  1. Chris,

I had this same exact problem a couple of years ago when I was out in Colorado for the ROA Convention. We were stuck in bumper to bumper traffic around Denver. Every time we stopped the oil light came on and I had to pop it into neutral and give it a little gas and it went out. Very annoying. We got back to a friend's house where we were staying, gave it a quick tune and got the idle reset. I have not had a problem since. That was 5000 miles ago, including the 1100 miles back home from Colorado. I don't know if this is your problem but, that solved mine.

I'm with Tom on this one. I have used both. I like the Eastwood. It is more expensive but, dries quickly and looks really nice.

    The circuit is pretty simple..........

First test the antenna to verify that it works........ground the case of the motor...apply 12v to one wire and it will go up,  switch to the other wire and it will go down.

The switch on the dash....12V goes into one terminal probably the one  that is off-set, with a meter you can test the switch...push the button one way (it is probably marked "UP" and "DOWN" )    Now test the wires

    Hi Barney,

The antenna has been tested and works well. The switch has been tested and is good. The question has not been how to make it work but, trying to ascertain which wires are already there in my car. The power wire to the switch is already there. The question that I have gotten conflicting answers on is whether the 2 wires that supply current to the antenna motor from the up and down terminals on the switch are in the dash or not. Some have told me yes they are already there and others have told me no they are not. I am just wanting to get confirmation one way or the other before I do the installation. I don't want to pull apart my dash looking for wires that are not there. Thanks.

After reading your last post and re-reading your first post, here's my latest opinion.  IF you car did not come from the factory with a power antenna - you say in your original post that you "have questions about adding a power antenna,"  then I'm thinking that the plug and play is only for the connector for a power supply to the switch.

If there was not a switch in the car for the power antenna, I can't see Buick putting a wire in the car that is not connected on either end.  They just wouldn't have a loose wire with one end lying loose around under the dash and the other end lying loose in the engine compartment.  I think that for you to add the power antenna you'll need the black (possibly dark blue)/green wire with the correct terminal ends, the switch, and the power antenna w/ it's mounting brackets - basically everything that is down stream from the existing power plug.  You can probably get away with just terminal ends on the black-blue/green wires with no connectors (easier to fish through the antenna hole with nothing on the ends too.)

Does the access panel in the inner fender already have the hole in it for the bracket bolt? If not, you'll need that too.  I can't tell from your posts which parts you have and which you still need.  But the easiest part to make, if necessary, is that black-blue/green lead wires that go from the switch to the lead wires from the antenna motor.  I'd say if you don't see the Black (blue)/Green wires hanging loose on the engine side of the firewall, then you need it.  If I read the memo correctly, the plug that's in your existing harness will be wired through the fuse block and you won't need an inline fuse.

If you do want to stick with OE parts, then I'd suggest that you contact Gene Guarnere for what you need.  He's parted out more of these cars than you can imagine and if he doesn't have it no one else does either.

I'd also like to hear other opinions as well before you take off on this adventure.

    Good luck.

    Ed,

I have the antenna and mounting bracket. The switch is in the process of being purchased. If we are to believe the service bulletin I have a power line and a connector for the switch that is routed to the fuse box, so I do not need an inline fuse. I have not looked at my access panel as of yet but, I had thought there was a bolt hole already as the service manual shows a bolt through the access panel to the bracket to hold the manual antenna that is on the car now. If needed I can manufacture a wire connection from the switch to the antenna. I have wire and the right connectors for each end from a wiring harness that I had gotten from a 1963 Pontiac LeMans years ago. It won't be OEM exactly but, it would be the right year and company. Thanks.

  5. Ed,

Thanks for all of the leg work. The switch and the wiring harness are not mine. The picture of the switch is one I will be buying and was one supplied by the vendor. The picture of the wiring harness is one sent to me by the same vendor when I had asked about the wire going from the switch to the antenna. It is an earlier harness which would have been put in an earlier car build or one put in by a dealer for someone with an earlier car wanting a power antenna after the fact. My car being the later build has the power wire already there wired to the fuse box. I know how everything hooks up. The question I need answered is: Is the wiring that goes from the switch to the antenna already in my car or do I have to supply and run that wire to the antenna? That is where I have received conflicting answers. I been told that the wiring is already there and I have been told I need to get it and run it to the motor. Thanks.

I'm at lunch in school right now but I think I may have an answer for you.  This is based on pulling a power antenna a few years ago so it may be wrong.

The wires in the harness go to the switch under the dash.  The electric antenna is equipped with wiring that goes to the switch.  Nothing from the harness goes directly to the antenna.  As I said, this is from year's old memory and it could be clouded.

    Ed

    Ed,

This is why I have asked this question. I have heard 2 different things about the wiring. I have been told that ALL of the wiring I need is in the car. Which is believable after reading the service bulletin. The bulletin basically says that it is "plug and play". I have also been told that the wire by the heater/AC control head is the power wire and that I need another set of wires to go from the switch to the connector on the wires that come out of the antenna motor.

After reading what you have said, looking at pictures of the different components and thinking about the plug that I saw last summer when I put my radio in, I am inclined to think that you are correct and that I do need the wire that goes from the switch to the antenna motor. To the best of my recollection the unused plug I saw was a single terminal connector which would go to the single terminal on the switch for power. I have attached pictures of an antenna switch, the wire that goes out from the antenna motor and an early wiring harness that shows the connector/wires that I would need to go from the other two terminals on the switch to the antenna motor. From the picture you can see that the connector that would go to the switch is actually two different sets of wires. One is the power wire, which is already in my car and the wires that go to the antenna motor.

Any confirmation one way or the other would be great. Thanks.

  7. Hi,

I have a question about the location of the wiring connectors/plugs for adding a power antenna. I know that the late 63's as of March 1, 1963 were equipped with one of 2 different wiring harnesses containing wiring for various optional accessories both of which contained the harness for the power antenna. These were wired to the fuse block so that in-line fuses were eliminated. I would assume that the 64's and 65's would be this way as well. My car was a late May, 1963 build. When I put my AM/FM radio in I recall seeing an unused connector/plug  which I assume was the connector/plug for the antenna switch at the heater/AC control head. The wire lead from the antenna motor is only 15"-16" long. I know that this wire follows the same path and goes through the same hole in the firewall as the antenna lead. From the short length of these wires I would think that the connector/plug for these wires would have to be located somewhere near where the antenna lead comes in through the firewall but, on the inside of the car. The wiring diagram included with the bulletin shows only a power antenna connector by the heater/AC control head. Has anyone done this that can tell me where the connector/plug is located that connects to the wires coming from the antenna motor? I just would like to get a general idea of where I need to be or any tips on doing this before I start ripping things apart. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

The brake light circuit goes thru the turn signal switch. If the switch is not in a neutral position, as is very common when the sheath on the turn signal actuating wire goes bad (tilt wheel only), the brake lights will only illuminate on one side. After you sort out the basics like good ground and connections, try positioning the tilt wheel in several locations when one brake light is out and you may find that is your problem.

    Tom Mooney

Do you have a tilt wheel? If yes, this could be the problem with one brake light and not the other. I thought I had a bad bulb and replaced that. The problem persisted so I thought I had a bad socket and replaced it. Seemed OK for a while and then the problem came back on the same side. Found this advice from Tom on the forum. I double checked to make sure the terminal connection was solid and moved the tilt wheel. I have not had a problem since.

I have used a "wanted" ad a couple of times and had good results. One for wheel covers for my '93, got some NOS covers for a very reasonable price. And another for parts for my '72 of which I received several replies. You might wait a bit and give that a chance when the next issue comes out, you never know what might come up.

I have also run wanted ads in the past. My ad won't run until the next issue. In the meantime I thought I would try the forum to increase my chances. Not everyone on the forum is a an ROA member and vice versa. If I find one before then I can always have Ray cancel the ad. If I don't, then I will let the ad do its magic. Thanks.

OK Bill: I have a set, unused, in the original boxes.  Didn't really want to break them up though.  BTW, why unused? There are still lots of cherry good used ones floating around.

BTW, no such thing as New Old Stock.  It ain't new because it was made 50 years ago.  Father Time casts his giant shadow on everything and everyone.  Mitch

    Mitch,

I have 3 NOS on my car right now and just thought I would see if I could locate a 4th. My 4th is a very nice used which if I could find the 4th NOS would make a great spare to have just in case. I would not want to ask anyone to break up a set but, if you would do that I'd be interested. Thanks.

If the center medallion is unimportant will an NOS wheelcover for any model fit your needs?

    Tom

    Tom,

As long as it has the same depth/height as the Riviera wheel covers and looks the same as the Riviera covers, no I don't care. I had purchased an NOS cover last year and it was identical except for the depth/height of the wheel cover. It was not as tall. The part number was 552288. I have attached pictures that I took at that time. Thanks.

  12. That's what I thought and last year managed to find 3 of them at the ROA convention in St. Charles last year. That 4th one has to be out there. I figured my odds are better trying to find one than 4. Thanks for keeping on the look-out for me.

  13. Hi,

I am looking to buy 1 1963, 1964 or 1965 Riviera NOS wire wheel cover. I need the 4/8 screw  configuration. I do not need the center medallion. I have 3 NOS on my car now with one very nice used cover. I am looking to complete the set and then shift the used cover to be my spare. If anyone has one they would like to sell or know of anyone I could contact that might have one please PM me. Thanks.

    Chuck,

Thanks for getting in touch with me. You were one of the people that we talked with that made our trip so great. I felt bad that I did not get your contact info before we left. Please keep me informed of how your progress goes with the Riv. I really like the silver. Also, the next time you see "Riviera Bob" please give him some major crap about not showing up at the show on Saturday. He had assured us he was going. Thanks for all the info on the heat riser. I will update you on how that goes whenever I go ahead and tackle that. I tried looking for the anti-rattle spring on e-bay and could not find one. Maybe I am not putting in the correct search parameters. What do you put in to find them? Please let me know. Thanks again for everything.

Bill, I really enjoyed reading your post. It reminds me of how lucky I am to have grown up in Flint with all of its rich history. While the vast majority of our state is ready to throw in the towel on Flint I love the city and know it will rebound in the years to come.

I became a history buff not too many years back when I began researching my family. All lines of my family were deeply involved in the early automobile industry with some starting as early as the Patterson carriage factory on through the days it converted to horseless.

My uncle was Vice President of General Motors in its infancy (and Cheverolet) and was right hand man to Billy Durant. One grandfather was established as one of Buicks executives and another two grandfathers came from Sweden to work in "The Hole" at the Cheverolet factory. One participating in the sit down strike.

I've been blessed with all of the family belongings which include hundreds and hundreds of old photographs showing what it was like to live in Flint during the late 1800's through the early 20's. And with these I am hooked on Flint forever.

Because of my fascination I now have a Durant Coupe to help connect me to my history. I'm a green horn with little experience with vintage cars but I'm learning. Each time I get under that car of lift the hood I think of all those who worked on it to put it together back in the day. What I would do to have one of them around to help me figure out how to repair the darn thing every time something goes wrong with it.

We have another event coming up in Flint this September called " Golden Memories". In no way shape or form is this close to Back to the Bricks but it's one that I'm more comfortable attending with the Durant. Smaller and more personal. I'm anxious to display "Mona Lisa" (my Durant) right at the entrance to the Sloan. And before returning home with her I hope to get a Proffesional photographer to get a few pictures of her displayed in front of the Durant Hotel.

I'm glad you had such a wonderful time here and on your next visit keep me in mind. I think a Riviera and a Durant would look pretty snazzy cruising together through town. Well, if you can handle driving your Riviera 35 MPH???

    best,

    Brian

    Brian,

Thank you for your kind words and great family background. You certainly are related to a huge part of the Flint story. You really need to get in touch with Peggy at the Genesee County Historical Society. I will try to dig up her contact info. She would love all of the connections you have with the Flint story. I had the privilege to meet her just before we left the All-Buick Show on Saturday. I have never met a man or woman in this case more passionate about what they love which in this instance was Flint and preserving and keeping alive the Flint story. She talked to us for an hour and it was fascinating hearing the tales and goings on of those days. PM me with your name, phone number, e-mail etc. so that I can put it with my "Flint File". Both my brother-in-law and I agreed a return trip may be in the cards. Please consider taking your Durant to the All-Buick show. They had some really old Buicks and they would be thrilled to have you there. The show is small, easy to get in and out of and the Buicktown members are the best. What a better place to show it than on the street in front of the plant where it was built. I will keep you in mind and I love driving my Riviera at any speed.

    Bill

  16. Just as a follow-up to this. If anyone is interested in more information, contacts or pictures of this event feel free to contact me. I would be more than happy to share this with anyone that is interested. I have attached a few more pictures. Two of the pictures are of a GMC van that was modified so that it was upside down and backwards as it moved down the street. The wheels on the top also rotated as it moved down the road. Just one of the freaky vehicles we saw on the cruise. I can never get more than 4 or 5 to attach to a post. Is there anything I can do to be able to get more pictures to attach. I have seen others do it on the forum. Thanks.

  17. Hi,

I just returned last Sunday from Flint, MI and a trip to the Back to the Bricks Cruise and Show and want to share my experience with you. My brother-in-law and I left early last Wednesday morning and drove my 1963 Riviera from Central Wisconsin through the Upper Peninsula of Michigan down to Flint. About a 10 hour trip for us one way. That beautiful drive along Lake Michigan and the trip across the Mackinac Bridge was worth it alone. Not to mention the stress free driving as compared to the drive through and around Chicago. I experienced that 13 years ago driving my 1963 Pontiac LeMans convertible back from Battle Creek MI where I purchased it.

I don't know if I can adequately describe to you in words what a fantastic experience this was for us but, I will give it a try. Any expectations we had for this trip were just blown out of the water and then some. We started Thursday with a trip to see "Riviera Bob" a Flint resident and look for some parts. Bob then graciously led us on a tour of the area where some of the events were that we would be attending. Bob led the way in his newly purchased 1965 Riviera Gran Sport which he is in the process of restoring and we followed in my 1963. There were lots of thumbs up on the way. Thursday night we attended one of the three nights of "Rolling Cruises" on Saginaw Street. The local BCA chapter Buicktown had an area reserved on Saginaw street for Buicks to park and watch the cruise. It was a great night sitting with other Buick lovers and watching hundreds of fantastic cars of all makes, models and years drive by. By the way did I mention that where my car was parked and we were watching the cruise was the site of the Fisher Body Plant where my car was built! I just about fell over when a Buicktown Chapter member told me that. We had an extended conversation with a Buicktown member about his experiences working for Chevrolet in the engineering department at the Flint plant. Very interesting.

Friday we spent the day going to the Sloan Museum, the Buick Gallery and the estate of C.S. Mott. It is at these three wonderful places that you really start to understand the huge role that Flint and its residents played in shaping the automotive industry as we know it today. I knew many of the names but, had no idea of how they meshed together to create what we know as General Motors. The Sloan Museum is a virtual time capsule of those times. What can I say about the Buick Gallery except wow! Walking around and standing inches from iconic dream cars created by Buick including the Silver Arrow One. Don't forget the Buick built WWII tank destroyer. C.S. Mott (yes, that Mott, his father and uncle started the company) was the longest standing member of the GM Board of Directors. He was a down to earth man that never forgot his roots and kept on giving back to the city of Flint until the day he died. His estate was beautiful but, not the opulent, overblown monstrosities that so many of the affluent built then and now. It was simple and functional. At one time he grew and raised all of the food that his family ate on the grounds. A very interesting man.

Saturday was the car show on Saginaw Street in downtown Flint. What a great sight to see. Cars of every description for you to walk by and see. The Buicktown sponsored an all-Buick show in conjunction with the larger show on Water Street which is within walking distance of the larger show. What can you say about parking your car across the street from the Durant-Dort Carriage Company Headquarters building, the birthplace of GM and next to Durant-Dort Factory #1? Walking the same ground that icons of the auto industry walked? Walking around the corner and seeing the house where Walter Chrysler lived and turning around and a block away see the house where Charles Nash lived? It is hard to describe.

What made the trip so special was the people we met. Everyone was so friendly and giving of their time and knowledge. I was taken aback by their passion and love of Flint and its place in automotive history. Their enthusiasm was infectious as you can tell by this long winded piece. I want to give a special thanks to Buicktown member Roger Tyyska who got me started on this journey months ago and also made it so great once I got there. If you ever have a chance get there. You won't regret it.

Just checked the set I ordered for the '58 and it turns out it was from CARS. Normally I love their products but the weatherstripping is already falling apart and is not rubber...the inner foam is deteriorating. This is the door weatherstripping.

Looks like Steele is my best bet, will wait a couple of days in case someone can recommend a better one before I place a full car order.

Thanks guys! Look forward to getting my car painted asap!

Thanks for that. The door weatherstripping on my car was replaced 3 years ago by the previous owner. I don't know the maker. It is ripping and falling apart along the bottom edges of the door. I had been thinking of the CARS weatherstripping because it was a great price and normally their products are good. I was probably going to order in the next week or so. It looks like I will have to rethink where I get it.

  19. Is this the cable you are talking about? If it is, that is the reset cable for the trip odometer. The metal knob end goes through a hole in the bottom edge of the dash below the steering column. The metal knob should have a rubber cap that makes resetting much easier. You can get them from CARS, Inc. Hope this helps.
