  1. The Turbinator (Bob Burnopp) and I have become good friends. I think Bob is a great guy and I enjoy our conversations. Even though Bob and I have known each other for a relatively short time I have a solid understanding of what a good man he is and what he may have done in the past has no bearing on my opinion of him now. Like many of you, I enjoyed Bob sharing his historical testing of the Riviera for Mechanix Illustrated. Bob's posting was good as far as it went but, Bob forgot to tell all of you the rest of the story. Unbeknownst to either of us our paths crossed years ago. In the spirit of transparency and full disclosure I have to share this with all of you. This is one instance where the good guy definitely gets the girl. Sorry Bob, I couldn't let this go untold. Please do not judge Bob too harshly.

I was looking through some photos of the gauges from when I got the car (gotta love how Google Photos keeps everything nice and chronological) and then looked at the odometer reading this weekend.  Decided to run some numbers and apparently I have driven it an average of 5.3 miles/day.  That's just under 2000 miles per year.  That might seem rather low for some of you guys, but the car pretty much sits for close to 1/2 the year because of the weather.

Of course all this assumes my odometer is actually accurate after all these years.

How heavily do you guys drive your cars?

I have put on 11,000 miles on my car in the 7 years I have owned it. Some years It may be as low as 1000 miles or over 2000 in other years. It all depends on the shows I go to and where they are. I try to take it to run errands weather permitting. My car is stored for 1/2 the years as well. I think your mileage is pretty typical for a seasonal car.

  3. Just an update to my previous post with the height dimensions for my car. AC, 225/75 tires, on original springs and 1/4 tank of gas was 25" front and 25" rear. Just filled up with gas and the rear measured 24 3/4" and the front 25 1/4".

  4. I know the merits of various oils have been bandied about on other threads. I just want to alert those of us that do use Mobil 1 that there is a very nice rebate being offered by Mobil. They are offering $5, $10 or $12 per 5 quart container depending on which oil you buy. The rebate is good for up to two 5 quart containers. The end date for purchase is September 30. You can register at mobil1.us/rebate or mail in a rebate form. I have attached a link where you can print the rebate form.

Maybe that has been around for awhile but, I was at Walmart today getting some of said Mobil 1 oil and noticed that they are also selling their oil now in a 12 quart "tapper" so that you can dispense as much or as little as you want. I thought this was a great idea.

    OMG, Thank-You Tom! You're a walking encyclopedia!

So it is indeed 5/16" between the fuel pump and carb. I will keep it that way with a future upgrade to 3/8" although I don't think an inline 3/8" fuel filter exists that has the 1/4" return port.

Further to this, I too wanted to upgrade from the standard SAE J30R7 Fuel Line Hose. So, Continental Made-in-USA Fuel Injection Hose has worked in the past? Will work with regular gear clamps?

Running out to buy the hose now before the stores close!

    Many Thanks!

    John,

As Tom said 5/16" from pump to the fuel filter and fuel filter to carb with a 1/4" return line. I don't know if you care about whether your fuel filter is AC or not. I believe all of the following AC filters are 5/16" in and out with 1/4" return: GF 67, GF 95, GF 96, GF 415, GF 418 and GF 423. I can personally vouch for the 96 and 423 for sure. When you do upgrade the AC GF 98 is 3/8" in and out with a return line which I am not sure of the size. That filter is for 65-67 Pontiac tri-power cars. There may be others.

    John,

There are 4 brackets to hold the 2 trim pieces on the left side. Two brackets for each trim piece. Let me know if you need pictures of what they look like and where they are located.

Can anyone advise where the remaining 4 pieces go?

    Thank-You,

  8. Since there are no car shows or events to go to I have trying to come up with other means to engage with my Riviera. I finally got around to one project that I have been thinking about doing for years which was swapping out the cigarette lighter for a USB charging port.

The swap is a pretty simple and straightforward one as the ashtray/lighter section removes easily and there is ample room to work inside the console once that is removed. The hole for the original cigarette lighter has to be enlarged a little more than 1/8" to accommodate the USB port. This is easily done with a step drill bit. A black paint to cover the bare metal and you are good to go. I don't know where the original fuse was located for the lighters but, I have a feeling that someone removed it as there was a spade connection a few inches down from the lighter on the red power wire which made my install easier. The positive and negative wires for the USB port had circle connectors on one end which I had to snip off and add the male or female connector to plug them into the existing wiring. The positive wire comes with an inline 10A fuse. The USB port is illuminated by an LED light which will stay on as that is a constant power source. From what I have read there really is no threat of a dead battery as the draw from this light is minuscule. An on/off switch could be added easily though.

When I had my AM/FM radio redone I had a pigtail added so that I could play my MP3 or Ipod. The lead was thin and was able to fit underneath the ashtray and out. I was worried that this may fray the wire eventually. I came up with a solution that would prevent that and also give me the ability to vary the length of the pigtail. On the side of the ashtray was a circle of smaller circles drilled so that the lighter light would also give light to the ashtray. I drilled out this circle as it was the perfect size to slip the plug for my MP3 player through. I put a rubber grommet in the hole to make sure that the wire didn't snag on the edges of the hole. This is nice because I can pull out as little or as much of the pigtail as I need and it store nicely in the ashtray out of sight if necessary.

I do have plans to use the wire from the original ashtray light to add a small accent light in the ashtray. Parts have not arrived yet. Will update when that is done.

What profile tires? With a full, half full, or empty gas tank. With or with out a/c?  There is more than 1" difference in the height of the bottom of the wheel arch and the top of the wheel so how can there be only one inch difference in the height from the ground.  Look at the car in the picture. The front wheel arch is about even with the top of the tire; the rear wheel arch is close to the top of the white wall.

If I have four passengers, average weight of 175 lbs, a full tank of gas, and luggage for four in the trunk, are my springs going to bottom out?

Data for informational purposes only. Just measured my car and it sits at 25" from ground to wheel well in the front and 25" in the rear. My car has AC and has 1/4 tank of gas. I am running 225/75 tires. I have Tom T.'s rear sway bar so that has added 1/2" to 3/4" to the rear height.

I can answer Ed's last question for my car. We drove back from the 2014 ROA meet from Colorado Springs to Wisconsin in my car. We had 4 passengers, average weight probably at least 190 lbs., full tank of gas and the trunk so full you could barely get the trunk lid closed. I still have the original springs and am happy to say that the car was not bottomed out. We did however scrape one of the tailpipes leaving our friend's driveway in Denver. It was fairly steep.

I'm looking for the seal at the end of the steering column, the one that seals the column from heat coming up the center of it. Search showed mentions, but I can't find one listed. Anyone have a link? Or do you make your own seal? Thought about using a piece of thick rubber floor mat (the interlocking tile type), but i'm not sure if its heat resistant.

Follow the link Jan gave you and it will lead to a tech tip on the ROA website that will tell you how to solve this. I cut my plug from a 2" thick piece of foam rubber following the directions in the tech tip. I put it in several years ago and it is still working fine.

I would like to get the Bilsteins on the front and a rear sway bar.  I have not seen anyone offering a larger front sway bar, which would help a bunch.   Then said I don't drive mine aggressively anyhow.

    Art,

Go to Tom Telesco (telriv) for your rear sway bar. He can get you Bilsteins too. Addco makes/sells front sway bars. They are sold by any number of vendors, so shop around as prices will vary greatly. You will want to purchase from someone that offers free shipping as well. That bar is heavy.

I'd love to have my steering box with tighter gears but it doesn't look like I stashed a core in any of my parts boxes from back-in-the-day. Magic Carpet Ride it is!

    John B.

    John,

Talk to Tom Telesco (telriv) about one of his steering boxes. I got one from Tom and did not have a core either. He will let you purchase without a core. There is a core charge but, it was cheaper than sourcing/paying for a core(which may be as much as the core charge) and then paying the associated shipping charges to get it where it needs to go. Tom will do his best to get you what you need.

If you do try to contact Tom it may take awhile for him to get back to you. From what I understand Tom has been incommunicado as a result of bad weather in his area. He has lost his computer and phone along with the ability to use them. He is working to get back online.

Make sure you test the unit before you install it or have it installed to make sure it works properly regardless of what brand you buy. My shop uses NAPA parts and they went through 5 switches before they got a working one.

These are the same door handles used on many of the GM cars of the era. I got mine from a Chevy parts supplier at a car show and swap meet. You might check those sites as well for pricing.

I have been doing some interior work on my car and put a power trunk set up off my parts car in.  My question is where can I get a cardboard set for power trunk?  I called Clark's because they had color options that may match my original stuff but they don't do power trunk cardboard.  On e-bay they are black and I don't want that and was hoping not do cover in vinyl.  Does anybody have any other sources I'm missing?  A really nice used on would work for me also  I really hate to replace any of what's in my trunk because its so nice and original.

    Thanks, Nick

    Nick,

The trunk cardboard is and should be gray. Here is a link to a trusted Riviera parts vendor selling his on E-bay. James is a good guy and sells good stuff.

  16. May or may not be your issue. I had a similar problem going to the BCA National Convention in 2018. Battery died for no apparent reason. Replaced battery, still not charging from the alternator. Coincidentally, pulled into an O'Reilly's and got a voltage regulator as a test at a Tires Plus said it was bad. Still not charging. Replaced that voltage regulator with another one. Still not charging. Got a new alternator. Still not charging. In the end all components were good, new and old. The culprit was a bad connection/connectors at the alternator. They looked good with a visual inspection. Old connectors snipped off, new connectors put on and the problem was solved. Of course, it was in the high 80's and humid while we were changing all of this stuff in the O'Reilly's parking lot and my brother-in-laws driveway.

Back to Seats - 1963 Bucket Seats.

I just picked-up my seats from the know-it-all upholsterer today. I was short a black fiber washer at the seat pivot before. Now I have an extra washer. I mentioned to the upholsterer that maybe there's 2 washers at each pivot, 1 under the seat bottom vinyl and another ABOVE the seat bottom vinyl. This is what I suspect but he said NO!

Where to find another washer if I have to open some hog rings to put the washers back? It has a 1/2" hole.

    Anyone?

    Thanks,

    John B.

    DSC03531.JPG

    John,

Here is a thread that might shed some light on the washer issue. I went through this with my front seats. To sum it up: there are 4 plastic washers, one at each pivot, each with a retainer, the inboard retainers are C-clips, the outboard retainers are the chrome caps. The plastic retainers cheaply purchased at a local do it yourself building center. They came in a pack of 20. I am sure I have some left I could send you.

FYI, you can order Lloyd mats direct (and without a logo, for an even lower price).

This is true. Lloyd's Mats are only available directly through them or one of their distributors that are listed on their website. It is cheaper to go through one of the listed distributors or buy from one of the listed distributors that also sells on e-bay. Through Lloyds directly you will have to pay shipping, whereas the distributors offer free shipping. The prices are the same and you can get the plain mats through the distributor. The mats are made to order and drop shipped from Lloyds. Plan for some delay because of this and they are a little behind because of the covid thing. It took about 3 weeks for mine.
