    Hi Bill,

      No, no `63 belts.

    Tom

Darn, thanks for letting me know. I sent a bunch to Ssnake-Oil Products to be evaluated for refurbishment. Still hoping to find some that are better than what I sent.

    Bill,

For a short period of time two lifetimes ago I managed the quality control center in a large UPS facility. It was very common for the pouch type labels to be torn from the packages as folks tape over them and if the tape is pulled from the package it peels away the soft clear plastic pouch. In the larger facilities the packages spend most of their time on high speed conveyor belts. If we received a package in QC without a label the procedure was to open the package to look for an invoice which generally provided a source and destination. If there was no way to determine a destination we sent the packages and contents to a warehouse which stored "overgoods" from all over the country. The overgoods are held for a specified period of time and then auctioned off.

Except for the odd occasion on which I forget, I ALWAYS include a note with source and destination inside the package when I ship.

    Tom

    Hi Tom,

I am guessing that the facility in Kentucky was such a place. That make sense to include the info inside a shipped package. I will do that from now on. Still a mystery as to why it was never scanned into the system.

    Bill

P.S. Any 63 seat belts in the lot your friend sent you?

  4. Update to the update to the update. The package with the wheel covers is supposed to be continuing on its journey to me. The explanation that UPS gave was this: The shipping label was in a plastic sleeve on the package. The sleeve got ripped off somewhere along the way so they sent it to Kentucky unsure what to do with it as there was no additional shipping info inside the box. Sounds a little weird to me. As long as they get to me intact I will be happy.

    Bill

  5. Update to the update. I just received another call from the shipper telling me that the box with my wheel covers has been located in Kentucky. Up to this point it has still not been scanned into the system. Seven days and it only made it that far. Seems to be an indirect route from Pennsylvania to Wisconsin. They are going to call me back later hoping to give me an explanation from UPS as to why it never got scanned into the system and how they located it without it being scanned into the system. They are also hoping to report back to me that it is finally scanned into the system and on its way to me.

  6. Update. I got a call from the shipping business to report that after a search of their warehouse UPS could not find the package. The owner of the business went over there personally today  to talk to the manager of the UPS center. They told me that they have video footage of the box with my wheel covers being handed to the UPS driver. I am sending a picture of the wheel covers to them so that they can give that to UPS so they know what they are looking for.

Does anybody have a lead on a source for new or good condition used ribbed aluminum dash inserts for a 64. Mine are scratched, I'm repainting my plastic dash in the Argent silver anyways and would rather remove my old aluminum panels and replace them than try to tape them off and save them.

These are not reproduced. You will need to get good used. AC or non-AC car?

  8. Fortunately, for Pontiac owners someone had the foresight to save the factory paperwork from Pontiac before it was destroyed. It is now under the care of the Pontiac Historical Society. For a small fee you can send them the VIN number of your car and they will send you copies of all of the original build sheets, manifests etc. for your car. For another fee you can have an exact replica of the window sticker reproduced. When I sold this particular car I sent all of that info with the new owner except for one copy of the window sticker and a copy of the shipping manifest. The window sticker shows that this car did have seat belts installed from the factory. It was included in the Standard Catalog of GTO by John Gunnell. If you know Pontiacs his name will be familiar. He lives only a short distance from me. He included the 1963 Tempest i his book as 1963 Tempest was the test bed for the 1964 GTO. Through 1964 the mid-size Pontiacs were all Tempests the LeMans and GTO designations were add-on packages to the Tempest. So the correct designation for the 1964 GTO was actually 1964 Tempest GTO. In 1965 Pontiac separated the Tempest, LeMans and GTO into their own individual lines. The last pictures are of the 1963 Pontiac Tempest Lemans that I sold to purchase my 1963 Riviera. You can see the different tail light configurations between the Tempest and the Tempest with the LeMans package.

The 1963 code for factory installed seat belts is B1.  Do you by any chance have pictures of the data plates from those 63s?  My 63 does not have the B1 stamped into the data plate (fact: I’ve never seen a B1 stamp on a 63 data plate) so I have to assume that mine were installed later, but they were not the factory belts that you pictured.  Why the original purchaser of the car didn’t have the factory belts installed, I don’t know. In the link that you posted, the picture from the Accessory Brochure was mine.  I’m curious if the belts in the box are dated?  And, are the belts unique to Buick, or are they universal for GM for 1963, or are they something that Buick/GM bought from an out side manufacturer and repackaged as GM?

    Ed,

I have pictures of the data plates and neither of them have the B1. The belts must have been added later from or by a dealer. From my limited experiences and what I have seen I don't think GM had a universal belt. As I said previously, my 1963 Pontiacs had factory/dealer belts and they were different than the Buick belts. They were the same style as the ones you gave the link to. The buckles were not chromed though. They had more of a matte silver finish like aluminum has. They also had a different anchoring method. The belts were not anchored directly to the floor. There were black eye bolts that screwed into the floor that the belts clipped onto. I have the window sticker from 2 of my Pontiacs. I will dig those out and see if they show the seat belts listed. So obviously, Pontiac and Buick were different. I cannot speak for the other GM models. I am sure Tom M. could speak to what Oldsmobile used. If you zoom in on picture of the tags on those boxed belts you can see they are dated.

Belts for a 63 are non GM or Buick specific.  These are just like the ones that are in my ‘63.

Au contraire Ed. There are specific belts for the 1963 Buick. Look at the attached thread and you will see this. As you yourself pointed out in that thread those same style belts are shown in the Buick Accessories pamphlet. Both of the 1963 Riviera's I just bought had those same style belts as Tom posted in his thread and I just purchased two more seat belts from a 1963 Riviera that are the same as well. Two of the 1963 Pontiacs I owned had factory seat belts. Those were the style that you showed in your previous post. What the other GM models did in 1963 I have no idea.

Great question! A member posed this question to me a couple of days ago and I dont have an answer. I have a stripped down`64 I can check.

I also just received a box of some very nice first gen seat belts I will be selling for a friend.

    Tom Mooney

    Hi Tom,

Any chance there are any 63 belts in that bunch? Thanks.

Bought a special tool from Washington State last month. I'm in Mass. The tracking number (USPS) showed the stalled pkg still sitting at the originating post office when I looked it up a week after it was shipped.  Notified the seller the pkg has been sitting at his PO for a week. It was on my porch the next morning.

Either the seller has a lot of clout over the post office or technology isn't "the be all and end all" we think it is.

It's nerve wracking but I would like to think it's just a glitch.

I had a similar situation with the USPS. I sent something Gene of AB&G. He kept asking where it was and I would say it's on the way as per the tracking number. I finally did a lost mail trace via the USPS website. Found that the package had been sitting at a post office in a town 20 miles from him for no apparent reason. He got the package the next day as well.

    Hi Bill,

It`s been a handful of years since I retired and there`s no doubt technology is more prominent today than 5 years ago but my understanding is that when the driver picks up he should have scanned the label. Even if he neglected to do so, the box would have had to literally fall out of the truck between the pickup and the local UPS facility because when it is unloaded it is scanned again by the unloader. So the package label should have been scanned twice by UPS employees the day it was picked up. Is it possible no one scanned the label that should have, and the package is in the system? Sure, human error! For all I know, at present, cameras may be responsible for the scanning of packages? Hope it mysteriously gets scanned again along the way and you have some satisfaction.

BTW,  the tracking number is issued when the package is initially labeled. They could have provided a tracking number and the package still in their facility and not picked up.

    Tom

    Hi Tom,

I understand that the tracking number is created with the label. My point is that they seemed to be on top of things. It was less than an hour before pick up. They had the box ready to go with a label. Possible, but, hard to believe they would have misplaced the box in so short a time. I am sure they have scoured the store for my box.

I found the lack of a scan puzzling as well. When they called UPS the first time because of the lack of tracking info, they tried to tell them that tracking won't start until the box reaches Wisconsin, which is bizarre.

    Bill,

Ihavnt reviewed all the posts, just your first, but I thought UPS claimed they didn't pick up the package? Is it possible the shipping customer has misplaced the box?

    Tom

    Hi Tom,

That is what it says on their website. This service has daily pick ups by UPS which includes a manifest of all packages that are picked up. They claim the package was taken with their daily 5:00 pick up by UPS. I talked to them Monday afternoon. They said they had just finished boxing them up and it was waiting to be picked at 5:00. Shortly after that they e-mailed me the tracking number. A mystery for sure.

  15. I was hoping that this post would be about me showing everyone how nice the NOS Turbines I just bought looked with the NOS set of center caps/spinners that I purchased from Steve Lorenzen. Yes, I am the lucky guy or sucker depending on your point of view that bought those NOS Turbines. Unfortunately, those Turbines seem to have disappeared into the ether. They were picked up on Monday from the shipping/packing business by UPS with an arrival of date of Wednesday. Wednesday has come and gone with the package nowhere in sight. UPS claims they never received the package. The service has daily pick ups by UPS and my package was on the daily manifest showing that the package with the wheel covers were in was picked up. Time will tell what has happened to them. Say a few prayers for me. I am still hoping in the meantime that they will show up and be mated with these beautiful center cap/spinners.

    Bill

P.S. If someone in the parking lot says, PSST you want to buy a nice set of NOS Turbines? Be wary, they may be stolen.

It helps a lot, (thank you!) but makes me wish for the turbine wheels I had on my 63!  These things are a pain in the ass!

You are welcome. They aren't that bad. Just take getting used to. Once you get the hang of it, it is a piece of cake. These are the Cadillac of wheel covers compared to the cheap flimsy crap on other makes and models. Just the weight of them is impressive.

Is there a trick, or you just pry on them until they bend? ☹️

I am sure others have their methods. This is mine. Attached are pictures of my weapon of choice. I first put a piece of cardboard underneath the tire. As gungeey pointed out they can fly off and hit the cement floor. They are heavy too, which makes a sudden grab more difficult if they come off. Slow and easy is the trick. The wheel covers can be easily damaged if you pry too hard or use something with sharp edges, such as a tire iron. I wrap the end of my pry tool with duct tape to keep this from happening. I also insert a 3" X 3" piece of 1/4" thick paneling between the rubber head of the tool and the tire. You do exert a lot of pressure and this keeps the rubber head from sinking into the tire making it harder to pry. As gungeey said go around around a little at a time. You can tell when it starts to come loose. Once you get it free in one spot, removal is pretty easy. Once you do it a few times you will get the hang of it. When you put them back on use the heel of your hand. They will seat just fine. Again once you do it a few times you will get the hang of getting them on. Do not pound them back on, even with a rubber mallet. They can be damaged. Hope this helps.
