  1. Okay I think we need to get a baseline of what we want this car to be, a basic runner/driver, an above average driver or good quality driver or perhaps a mid to high quality restoration. So I am going to go with a decent driver because I like to drive my cars. Pete you do bring up up some good points on the car. However I will bet you that it's going to need the following and probably more: brakes all the way around with a master cylinder, fuel system which includes the tank cleaned out, a fuel pump rebuild, troubleshoot the engine and hope that it's not something major. The front and rear bumpers including the grill need to be redone. The paint is a crap shoot and unless you completely repaint it, it will take a lot of time to bring the existing paint back and it will still show the major blemishes. I will assume the trans and rear end are okay and would only need the fluids replaced. And then you're left with; Does it overheat, do the gauges and the horn work, what is the condition of the wiring, are there fluid leaks, do the shocks leak. I could go on and on, but as I mentioned in my previous comment " If it looks haggard on the outside it's probably worse on the inside!" If you want a project that is going to be a labor of love buy it. If you want a "get it running type driver" maybe this is not the car for you.
  2. I have to admit getting into my 57 Poncho or my 40 Buick it takes some adjustments in my driving habits. With manual steering I am forced to make because it's the first thing rears its head when I first start driving.
  3. For the most part these AACA threads have been clean and quite respectful. Hope the potty mouthed younger generation you refer to are able to keep their street slang to a minimum.
  4. I like these GM fastbacks from 1949. The Buick IMHO is the best looking. However as stated by 'kingrudy' above the Caddy's bring the most money! From the stupidly shot pictures I can see this one needs quite a bit work. It might have been in the same family for years but they certainly didn't take care of it all too well. If I were looking to buy it I would beat the seller up on price and see if I could get it for less than 15. If it looks haggard on the outside it's probably worse on the inside! GLWTS
  5. I like the early Cougars and this is one those! However this is not an XR-7model. The steering wheel looks a bit haggard and there is no console. Though those hub caps may or may no be standard issue from Mercury but they would have to go. But the fun here lies is the drivetrain; a 302ci with a 3spd manual. Kind of cool to look at but I would want an XR-7! GLWTS
  6. The description sounds great and the car looks very nice... but what's with with the door windows? Is it a tint job gone bad? Did the seller forget to clean the door windows? Or is it a bad reflection?
  7. Here's a '53 Mercury coupe but roof on BAT that brought pretty good money. Mind you it doesn't have the plex top. But this Mercury is an anniversary car and in 53 it used a flathead. I know a bit about the flathead Fords so I don't fear buying one. The thing with flatheads is the distributor must be removed from the car in order to change the points and in my 47 it was a positive ground electrical system. https://bringatrailer.com/listing/1953-mercury-monterey-9/
  8. These cars are pretty cool. I agree that they probably get a bit hot in direct sun light. These plex tops tend to develop multiple hairline stress cracks near the edges. This one might have that issue due to the fact that the seller really doesn't include a good picture of the plex top. That would take the price down in my book.
  9. I have one of these and it probably would do 70 mph but I would never do it. Too much for an 83 year old car. It looks like a clean car but certainly not an original looking car!
  10. Looks like a sweet affordable car. No more use of the flat head V8's, fifty four was the first year of the Y block V8's. The one thing that sticks out is the aftermarket air cleaner. I wouldn't think a 54 air cleaner would be that hard to find as these cars are not rare of that collectible!
  11. Whew, does that interior look nice! A 427 V8 under the hood with power steering steering and power brakes but no A/C. I believe this has power DRUM brakes so the driver better watch it when using the power out of the big engine because the brakes won't save you in a panic!! That steering wheel looks like it's out of a late 60s early 70s Gran Torino! I do agree it's a lot of car for the money!
  12. Well I am no model A afficionado but this styles looks pretty nice. Moreover these cars are just not practical for driving on the todays roads so I will probably never own one. The 12 volt conversion inappropriate on the is car and the alternator looks out of place. The question I was going ask is if the gas is a gravity feed to the carburetor? But then I saw the plastic container tilted downward and that answered my question! I not sure of the value on these things but I would guess good original would fetch money in the high teens. But this one has issues so maybe it's a 10 to 12 thousand dollar car! Oh yeah the description say a 5 spd tranny???
  13. Though I love Buicks of this era this one at 80G's doesn't exactly float my boat. First it is a Special and 248 ci straight 8 and not the bigger 320 motor. I too prefer the 4 door convertibles. I know of a 38 Roadmaster convertible owned locally in very similar condition and it probably approaches 80G's but realistically 70 to 75G's is probably where it would be valued. Remember a Roadmaster is a lot more car than a special! I have seen some stunning brown and tan color combinations but this one doesn't do much for me but that's a personal thing. The 38 Buicks are a personal favorite of mine and the actual quality of the restoration on this one 'looks' good but I think the seller is trying to recoup some of the restoration costs in the price!
  14. It will be interesting to see how to does... https://bringatrailer.com/listing/1940-pontiac-special-deluxe-sport-coupe/ I have no interest in this vehicle and have no stake in the sale.
  15. I'm a little more optimistic on this one. I think aesthetically speaking if you removed those seat covers, removed and replaced the carpeting, removed, scrubbed and reinstalled the door and sail panels, wet sanded the paint and polished the chrome this beast would come alive! However there's no telling the amount of rust that this thing could have. But at least the seller stating it needs brakes which you have to assume that it needs front and rear brakes with the possibility of a master cylinder Seller also states it needs the fuel tank and lines cleaned out. What I am getting at this could be a decent driver but there would a considerable amount of work and money to get there.
  16. Not too much to like with this design. But that's me! That this one is painted and the interior has been redone is a big step in the right direction. But what lurks below the skin is the question. The brakes need to be bled; hmm😝 Chances are the brakes will need more work and then bled after that. This one needs a good inspection before you buy it.
