  1. It was just the first I found. I didn’t know there were other options. However, like I mentioned, I was trying to find an inexpensive part and the book even is too expensive to justify it. I am am sure there are lots of people like me, just trying to get something running to sell that finding one small part for, would make purchasing this book impractical. I also don’t know why parts dealers or the cars manufacturer wouldn’t have it to look it up. Maybe what I was looking for wasn’t even in there, but I called no less than 35-40 places looking for a part that went in the intake and I had to figure it out by looking at thousands of images from a random air intake search. The books just are not practical for the person not keeping the car.
  2. It is a very unique camper. Here is a great resource to learn more: https://www.corvair.org/chapters/ultravan/
  3. I wonder if it would have even been in there. No part shop on the planet or any forum could tell me this. Also its $700. The part was like $20 so totally impractical for me.
  4. I am going to try and find some clarifying dimentions. If anyone knows the difference between 37 & 38, please let me know. Pictures online sure look the same and I’m getting conflicting info. Thanks.
  5. @Frantz, the lack of digitization is very hard for me. I was, after all, a computer teacher and IT administrator. I imagine there is, and will continue to be, a lot of people like myself who inherit cars we know nothing about. That plus the way the next generation of hobbyists are raised, means it really does need to be done. At least if there are books, it makes it a whole lot easier to create the database. Someone needs to figure that out. Maybe not all the old timers will use it, I can see the allure of the hunt for them, but there will be an increasing demand for it over time, I am sure.
  6. Well I imagine your “Cadillac Carl” for a reason. Thanks bud!
  7. OTOH, I wish there was a database that would have told me that mustang air cleaner part would have fit the ‘79 Lincoln engine that I was looking for. I wound up looking through a whole lot of images on Google and was lucky that what “looked” right was right. Not sure how you’d monetize that, even if you built it, though.
  8. Thank you @C Carl. So ‘38 is definately different?
  9. I believe this is a ‘38 based on information given to me. Good condition, no breaks. I have not tried to polish it up but can provide more pictures if requested. Best offer plus actual shipping cost from 97128. (Oregon). I would bubble wrap and double box this for secure shipping and will insure.
  10. Try a different browser as it could just be an issue with a recent update to that. If you usually use Internet Explorer, try Chrome for example.
  11. eBay is probably the largest. Also Bring A Trailer, Craigslist and others specific to make, depending on what make/model you are Interested in. What are you looking for?
  12. Yes sir and I distinctly remember going up a long, steep grade on I5 in this in Northern Cali on the way to a Rally. It had plenty of power to climb that grade. I have been in pickup trucks hauling boats that struggled more. Haha the ride was very comfortable. Papa even took it grocery shopping. My Mama didn’t have a license and he could wait for her while enjoying a cold drink in it. ? They also do not have a chassis and are designed and built like airplanes. Note: scroll left in the newsletter to see the other pages. Looks like it was uploaded backwards.
  13. Today on a Facebook Corvair page, I quite by accident stumbled upon some interesting info about my Papa (Grandfather on my mother’s side). Papa was very interested in corvairs and I do believe that is where my father’s interest was peaked for them. He owned Ultra Van #434 from about 1973-1985. I found out the coach is just about 20 miles from me. (They have an excellent registry). I went to Rallies with them and cruised the Oregon Coast many times with them. I was also told this: I just figured out why the name was familiar. He wrote the ULTRA BULL(etin)s - very early and influential UltraVan maintenance tipsheets! He wrote "Flush It" (oils), "Cool It", Basic Bull" (weight control), "Tune It" and of course the classic "Ruckus in the Rear". Yes, Papa had a sense of humor for sure. He also wrote training manuals for the military after his service. They made a new private citizen pay grade for him and he was the highest paid civilian of his time. I remembered the van but didn’t have a picture of it and didn’t know about the newsletters. It was really neat to get all this info. I hope y’all don’t mind me sharing this. Sample newsletter: Also a picture of me with Mama and Papa when I was about 15 or 16, about 1980, and a current pic of the Ulta Van.
  14. I really have no idea what it’s putpise is or if he added it, but for comparison, here is a pic of the engine in his 61 Rampy. My father was a mechanic in the AF and worked on cars since he was at least 16. I’m sure there was a reason but we will never know what it was. In the Fairlane, there are a couple weird things. One is a batter shut off switch. I assume it is to prevent fires and battery drain? I also switch it off when I put in in the garage. Another is an on/off switch under the dash for the top motor. I don’t think it’s factory but I’m not sure. Again I have no idea why. Maybe to prevent battery drain? I’m not even sure he added those but he’s had the car since the 80’s so it’s possible.
  15. There’s a weekly show at PIR in the summer that has 2k+ cars at times. There are definately some beautiful cars here. Texas is another gold mind.
  16. I feel like there should be awards: Best auto/foliage color Most creative “foliage” Best scenery The problem is that I love all these photos, even the ones without cars. I’d have to make categories until they all won. One thing I have learned from this thread, is that nowhere do our beautiful autos look better than in natural scenery.
  17. I’m loving these pics. I think we should do this in the spring also!
  18. Remember those days we’ll back in NH. Now my landscaper uses a blower and it doesn’t take him nearly as long!
  19. Nice pics! My father was raised in Michigan and I spent time there when I was young with aunts and uncles. Beautiful state.
  20. I sold it in 2016. I would probably have clear coated and kept that patina. It was running and driving and the wiring in the engine was relatively new. It had sat a few years since my dad was ill, but he was a mechanic and took good care of his cars. Put in a new battery and It fired right up.
  21. No worries. Not worth digging that far. Thanks for saving it!
  22. I like the color of yours. I sold this ‘64 Deluxe model that my dad had. Thought it was pretty cool but never did drive it. Thanks for the experience.
