  1. Jan, Just in case you come here first, check your email. I found one for you. Jason Advanced Electrical Rebuilders Advanced Electrical Rebuilders - Antique Auto - Marine - Agricultural - Industrial
  2. Mark, The oil would definitely explain the smoking from the resistor. Most people don't realize how hot those puppies get. They (me too quite a few times) usually find out when they accidentally touch one when working on something nearby. I've grabbed many while working on them on the test bench, you know it right away! They are just mini-toasters! Anyway, I thought everything visible in the pictures looked okay. 3. Chris, I don't believe you will have much luck finding a new one. I can rewind yours. Let me know if this interests you. Jason Advanced Electrical Rebuilders Advanced Electrical Rebuilders - Antique Auto - Marine - Agricultural - Industrial
  4. Delco 725-T is the critter you are looking for. You don't have one to be rebuilt? That will be the best option if possible. I can rebuild and rewind any of the components. Let me know if this is an option. Jason Advanced Electrical Rebuilders www.aerrebuild.com`
  5. Jan, I just sent you an email. Looks like I might have found one, won't know for 4 to 5 days for sure. Jason Advanced Electrical Rebuilders www.aerrebuild.com
  6. I'm still looking. Doesn't look like I have one here, and I'm still waiting for several sources to get back with me. Don't give up yet. Jason Advanced Electrical Rebuilders www.aerrebuild.com
  7. Better yet, head over to the welding supply store. Those welding cables are nice to work with and come in the same heavy guage. Remember, you can never go to heavy! The current won't get lost because the cable is too large! Jason Advanced Electrical Rebuilders www.aerrebuild.com
  8. Ultimately it's your car, your choice. I personally don't ever recommend switching over to 12V. Good, starting and charging system, good battery, good (correct size) cables and connections and you'll have no troubles. In your situation, you'd be money ahead to buy the six volt battery and a battery tender (for when it's sitting) versus switching everything over to 12 volts. To be honest, I specialize in restoring starters, generators and distributors (99.9% to original) so I'd be the wrong guy to ask on what all is involved. I've heard it's much more expensive and involved than most think. If you still decide to go to 12V, I can help you by converting the generator and starter for you. A lot of people say an existing 6 volt starter will work fine on 12 volts. Not true, that is very hard on the starter. For starters, you'll burn through brushes and the drive/bendix spring won't like it either. Jason Advanced Electrical Rebuilders www.aerrebuild.com
  9. Just curious, why would you want to make switch to 12V? Jason Advanced Electrical Rebuilders www.aerrebuild.com
  10. Not a silly question. The answer is no, a traditional coil wound motor/starter doesn't care what polarity it is hooked up to. It will always run in the same direction. Now, on the more modern permanent magnet starters, that's a different story since the magnets (coils) are always the same polarity and by hooking the starter up positive ground you are just changing the polarity of the brushes only which will reverse the rotation. 11. Very entertaining post! I always enjoy reading everyones stories. As stated above, these are basically a simple single coil solenoid. If anyone ever needs one rewound, give me a shout. I've rewound them before. Jason Advanced Electrical Rebuilders www.aerrebuild.com
  12. All 1927 Studabaker's should have been 6 volt positive ground originally. Jason Advanced Electrical Rebuilders www.aerrebuild.com
  13. Mark, It is pretty common for a new regulator (resistor) or one that has sat for a long period of time to smoke when being used for the first time. It should pass after a few minutes. Jason Advanced Electrical Rebuilders www.aerrebuild.com
  14. Yep, thats the same number I come up with. According to my books, it only interchanges with: Pontiac 1939 8 cyl 1940 Deluxe 8 1940 Torpedo 8 - Jason Advanced Electrical Rebuilders www.aerrebuild.com
  15. Scootman, I'm sure I have the solenoid, but what your describing is what I usually hear from customers when the drive (bendix) is bad. I'd say about 75% of customers who say that the solenoid no longer engages the drive into the flywheel are actually hearing the solenoid engage the drive, but the drive clutch is bad. What happens is the clutch in the drive no longer has the strength to hold onto the gear and the gear stays stationary in the flywheel while the rest of the starter motors. Fell free to contact me for more information. Hope this helps. -Jason Advanced Electrical Rebuilders www.aerrebuild.com
  16. Jan, I'm still looking for the starter, but I have all the ignition parts. I just sent you an email on those parts. Jason Advanced Electrical Rebuilders www.aerrebuild.com
  17. I have a couple of ideas, but have a few questions first. I will send you a private email/message. Jason Advanced Electrical Rebuilders www.aerrebuild.com
  18. Jan, I can't help you with the headbolt, but I should be able to come up with something for the ignition parts and starter. Let me do some digging and I will get back with you. Can you send me an email with your contact info? Jason Advanced Electrical Rebuilders www.aerrebuild.com jason@aerrebuild.com
  19. Pete, The ignition is to feed the field control. If updating to modern 3 terminal, tape off the "ign" wire. Jason Advanced Electrical Rebuilders www.aerrebuild.com
  20. I can help you. I have restored many of these units over the years. Shipping can be a little high ($30 or so), but well worth it to have someone who is experienced with the old stuff. That is primarily all I do. About 95% of my work is shipped in and as long as it is packaged well damage is never an issue. Also, A fair number of the jobs I get in are jobs that the"local" shops have either screwed up or could not repair. I've had many customers wishing they would have just sent it to me in the first place. Feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns. 21. I can help you. I specialize in rebuilding/restoring the old starters and generators. Feel free to contact me with any questions. Go ahead and click over to my website to see some examples. I can also email you more recent pics if you would like. Jason Advanced Electrical Rebuilders Grand Ledge, MI 48837 www.aerrebuild.com jason@aerrebuild.com
  22. I would suggest keeping it simple at first. Check battery voltage with car off. Should be 12.5 or so. Start the car and the voltage should jump up to 13.5 or higher. If the voltage comes up at all, then you are getting some sort of charge. Then procede from there. Feel free to contact me for help. Jason Advanced Electrical Rebuilders www.aerrebuild.com
  23. Are you still confident that the thefts took place in the last six weeks? I was following a Packard starter, generator and complete engine w/ generator on Ebay for quite sometime. It was being listed by a pawn shop / consignment shop in Norwich, CT. It had been on there for months and just recently was not re-listed. I was in contact with the guy several times trying to strike a deal, but price was always too high. Good Luck, Another sad case. How do these folks sleep at night? Check Washington D.C. Lots of thieves there! Jason Advanced Electrical Rebuilders www.aerrebuild.com
  24. Any chance that the 8 is a 3? MCL-6113? I don't find an MCL-6118 anywhere. If it is a MCL-6113, I have a drive/bendix available. I will send you an email as well. Thanks, Jason Advanced Electrical Rebuilders Advanced Electrical Rebuilders - Antique Auto - Marine - Agricultural - Industrial
  25. Is that supposed to be a starter or bendix number? I show either a MCL-6003, MCL-6113 or a MCL-6114 for Autolite starter numbers. Is the number you gave a Packard number? Jason Advanced Electrical Rebuilders www.aerrebuild.com
