2nevets
Can I replace the axle while the assembly is still in the car?
38ShortopConv.
No. the axle dose not pull out thru the brake shoes from the center spline like some vehicles do. You need to remove the left axle housing then both axles and ring gear assembly can be drawn out of right housing. Of cause you will need to pull both hubs and remove left radius rod 3 inch? bolt from drive shaft housing. Edited February 7, 2018 by 38ShortopConv. 1941
I purchased a new housing so that I could remove and replace the same day without tying up a lift for so long. i

Yes you can do this but you must use a spring spreader to disconnect the spring from the left side housing . Unbolt the radius rod from the housing and the brake line & cable . Remove the left housing and slide the whole differential assembly out . Of course this means you must have removed the hub on the right side. Take note of the gaskets on the left housing and replace them with the same thickness when you re-assemble it.
19tom40
IMHO when you replace the left axle, you should go through the whole assembly and replace the inner seals and repair both of the housings. Then you are good for many miles of trouble free driving. What does the right side axle and housing look like?
