GraniteBayBob
Hi, need to remove gas gauge from gas tank, to replace float device cork or rubber.Gauge glass rim looks like it is pressed on, from the pattern in metal near top edge. The gauge collar is soldered onto tank and has three rivets.Must the gauge collar be um-soldered, the rivets ground off to pull the gauge out?I tried large channel locks and large pipe wrench, as you can see from the marks on edge, and it did not want to budge. This new site format sucks!!!! I can't upload an image, I don't have a URL. Edited July 3, 2015 by GraniteBayBob (see edit history)
Owen_Dyneto
No first-hand knowledge but the fact that the ring around the glass is knurled suggests it unscrews.
keiser31
Yes....it should simply unscrew.
28 Chrysler
The last one I took off I had to wrap a shop rag around it and used a pipe wrench. You may have to work it both ways to break the crud loose.Check the gears, they can be out of round, split and cracked.
Owen_Dyneto
To avoid damage to the ring and possibly distort it, I'd strongly recommend a plumber's strap wrench instead of a pipe wrench. Try to tighten it before loosening it. Sometimes that helps.
GraniteBayBob
Well after two days of applying penetrating oil, this morning it finally came free. The little windmill type gears are made of copper and are in perfect condition. The cork looks good but will replace if I can find a replacement. Again thank you all for your assistance, as usual this site rocks. Edited July 3, 2015 by GraniteBayBob (see edit history)
ply33
Might try using a float off of a modern universal sending unit. It should stand up to alcohol better than a cork float, especially if all you are using to seal the cork is shellac which is dissolved by alcohol.
