remresto Posted December 29, 2006 Posted December 29, 2006 We have a pair of NOS Buick parts that were on our shelf. We were wondering if someone knows what they are for. Each piece has a small Buick logo, and one has the number J5973 in the cast brass portion.
Guest DaveCorbin Posted December 29, 2006 Posted December 29, 2006 Dear remresto: The items are Buick dealer service tools. J indicates a tool usually made by a company named Hinckley-Myers. I can't help you beyond that. Regards, Dave Corbin
remresto Posted December 29, 2006 Author Posted December 29, 2006 Here is another picture of the other side of the parts.
50jetback Posted December 29, 2006 Posted December 29, 2006 Steering gear half nuts. These are pre 1928 and have less threads than the 1928 steering box. Part numbers for 28 are 256360 Half nut, assembly, right, includes half nut, thrust block and dowel pin259361 Half nut, assembly, left, includes half nut, thrust block and dowel pin.
50jetback Posted December 29, 2006 Posted December 29, 2006 My parts books don't go back far enough, later steering boxes ( up to 1929 ) used half nuts with 5 threads, this one has 4 and the part number 15973? inicates it's from a pretty early model, possibly 4 cylinder?
Dandy Dave Posted January 3, 2007 Posted January 3, 2007 I looked up the part numbers in the parts book for my 1915 C-36 and it has similer looking pieces but different part numbers. The book stated that these were only sold in pairs.
Mark Shaw Posted January 3, 2007 Posted January 3, 2007 These look like the ones in my 1913 modle 31 Buick! I really don't want to take my steering box apart to verify, but they sure look to be the same. The first time I reassembled the steering box, I put them in backwards....The wheels went left when I tried to turn right....Could be a fun prank on tour....
