story: when i was 12 my dad took me for a ride in his 79 spitfire convertible (the summer he brought it home after it sat next to grandma's house since my birthyear) and he took me to a large parking lot at my elementary school actually, me not knowing his plans, and he shut it off, handed me the keys and had me do figure 8s and stuff and practicing coming to a SMOOTH stop <img src="http://forums.aaca.org/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />

When I was in high school, my dad got me out of bed to put his car away, that I had left in the driveway. I was half asleep, and put it in the garage, and through the garage..! I only moved the back wall out a couple of feet at the bottom, and didn't even scratch the '52 S-88, but it scared the Hell out of me... Something I haven't gorgotten after 40 years....

I learned how to drive on dad's 55 Special. 4 Door with the stick. I didn't drive it far, but I drove it every day. Out of the driveway, up and down the block. I was 15. This formed my deep love for Buicks and stick shifts. Sure wish I had one today.

My son, who is 14 has a good freind, (nick named Bubba, also 14) whose brother (17) has a 2005 Mustang with a manual transmission. The other morning the older brother asked the Bubba to start his car for him so it would be warmed up when they went to school. Bubba went out, pushed the clutch in, started the car, let the clutch out and drove threw the garage door. The car was sitting outside and Bubba pushed the clutch in about half way into the garage so it didn't do the kind of damage this one did. 14 must be a bad age for kids and sticks. In South Dakota they allow kids to get a school permit at age 14 and once they have had drivers ed and passed the test these kids are allowed to drive between the hours of 7AM and 7PM alone anywhere in the state. I have told my son if he doesn't carry a B average or above there will be no permit or drivers license. He is still waiting.
