"I bet it look's better with the top down"

well now it's looks "too much like a buick" so I guess a person can't win. It's either "too much like a buick" or it's "only a buick"

How about the VW Rabbit types where the top just kinda piles up on back of the car. Folded top has to be at least flush with the belt line to look decent. <img src="http://forums.aaca.org/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

I don't know about that - antique "convertibles" fold down the same way and they look terrific! <img src="http://forums.aaca.org/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />

I'll confess though, if my 450SL's top didn't go under the decklid, I might not have loved it as much!

The way the top folds down on the bug looks like it wasn't given much thought, it's hard to use the rear view mirror.

P.S.

That color will get changed when I redo this bug, may be a deep red with the black top, but only after we redo the 1970 VW fastback 1st

You have to keep in mind at least 2 important factors when discussing the VW top and why it sits so high...

*there is a lot of area that is covered by the top...covers 4 seats and has more bows to support that material..it also has a headlinner... both resulting in a great deal of material = thickness

*there is absolutely no place to put all of that material....remember the engine <img src="http://forums.aaca.org/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> ?

I think all the "neck breakers" and "wide eyes" more than make up for the few bad remarks we must listen to every now and then.

I've always felt that the Reatta convertible is more attractive than the coupe - with the top down. Top-up, the coupe actually looks better.

Next best thing could be a coupe with retractable top, then T-Tops, and lastly, a s t r e t c h e d top.

Roofer is a friend and I know his wife pretty well. I think that is why I was taken back with his comment," Looks like a Buick", if he wasn't a friend I might have replied, "bet you look better with your pants down!"
