I am a writer getting started on my fourth book-set largely in a 64 Olds! I picked the car because my family had a Cutlass as a kid that I loved, but I've only ever seen pictures of the car I've chosen-a black 64 Olds Dynamic 88 4-door convertible-and only a few pictures at that, but I fell in love with the feel of the car to help create the mood of the novel. I would greatly appreciate any information on the car...pics, descriptions of the interior and exterior, how it handles if you've driven one, problems it's likely to have (something that could leave my characters stranded on the side of the highway, for instance), and ways that a true enthusiast (which my main character already is and I am swiftly becoming) would baby such a car. Basically anything and everything you can think of, e-mailed to blue_eyed_melissa @ hotmail.com. You'll have my undying gratitude and a place in the title page aknowledgements.

Thanks. [color:\\"blue\\"]

I had a '64 Jetstar 88 Convertible (Blue, 2 tone blue int and light blue top) and really loved that car. I put well over 200K on her over 13+ years. Took my drivers test in it and took it to prom twice. grin.gif Many road trips from Denver to Sidney, Montana. Ahh the memories! Your pic shows it is a 4 door, and looks like it is a convertible. I have never seen one before. What is the story behind it?

Hello missa, note that the Olds is a 4dr hardtop. That means it has a steel roof but no posts around or between the windows, so when they are rolled down as in the photo there is an airy and unobstructed view . There were essentially NO 4dr convertibles made since the 1940's except 1961-67 Lincolns, all other popular convertibles were always 2drs. The 1964 Olds was a durable car when new, with a good reputation. Probably the weak spot was a short lived automatic transmission that developed a poor reputation later. A knowledgable car enthusiast would have bought one for the "Rocket" V8 and a reputation for above average quality and engineering. Compared to modern cars they had soft suspensions that had much lean and squealing tires in sharp turns, and the brakes were somewhat casual compared to what came later. Note also virtually all had the automatic transmission and an AM radio, and usually power steering and brakes. Air conditioning was used in less than half of the cars, AM/FM radios rarely, and cruise control was virtually unheard of. See if you can find a book called "Cars of the Sensational '60's" a coffee table book with a silver cover. This will give you some good basic photos and descriptions. Good luck with your book, Todd C

If you have Cracker Barrel restaurants and "old country stores" in your area, they usually keep this book in stock.

I've forwarded your request to the Oldsmobile Club magazine. Someone should be able to help you. If you'd picked a Starfire I could be all over this! I can give you some basics on the 64, PM me.
