Classes

Hope this doesn't sound like "sour grapes", but this is my first year as owner of a "classic" car. Has been to 3 or 4 shows, including Carlisle and has not won any awards. As a 100% original car, I really haven't expected to win any, car was bought as a hobby. My question/gripe/complaint is that on a couple of occasions, it was the only "original" vehicle in the class. At Carlisle, there were 3 "original" cars in the class, but the first place went to a car that was obviously "restored to close to original" unless Chrysler Corp. shipped chrome valve covers custom plug wires and chrome air cleaners in the 60,s. I guess my question is. Shoulden't there be an "original" and a "restored to Original" class.

I assume you are referring to the AACA Spring Meet in Carlisle. There is a class for original vehicles. It's called HPOF (Historical Preservation of Original Features) for those folks wanting to showcase their original vehicles.

Simply put, the other cars won and yours didn't because they were judged to be closer to the condition in which they left the factory. Because of the point scoring system AACA uses an unoriginal feature or two does not necessarily prevent the vehicle from taking an award. Invest in a judging manual or attend judging school for further insights into the system. Sounds like a nice car you have, mind telling us a bit about it ?

Andy, what class did you enter...my gut feeling is the you did not enter HPOF which would have been most appropriate depending on what kind of car you had. Restorer's suggestions are right on, the manual and classes will help you understand a lot about your car and the judging system. AACA has more to offer you than just shows and trophies so hang in there and learn about all our activities.

I obviously should have posted a little more info. Unfortunatly I haven't been able to attend an AACA event, The Carlisle event was the Chrysler nationals in july having read the AACA judging criteria, it seems far better than what I have seen so far. Again, I hope this doesn't sound like a "sore looser", I just feel its' unfair for "original" vehicles to compete agains't "Restored to Original".

Noe that I have that off my chest, thanks for the replys.

P.S. Have only had the car since April (newbee)and am really new at this. Again, thanks

Andy, you may want to check back with the folks in the Chrysler club. In many single marquee clubs there is a class for unrestored cars and you would be in "competition" with only cars that meet your criteria. AACA tries to have classes that fit the needs of its' members such as the HPOF class and the Drivers class. Thanks for joining the hobby, you will find that the best thing will be the people you meet while having fun with your car. Get active and join an AACA region.

There is really very little in common between AACA judging and what you experienced at Carlisle. Like posted before, you were in participant voting not judging. Also even if you had been in the certified judging, it too is suspect and inferior not only to AACA judging but to Mopar Nationals in Columbus. Totally Auto, a resto shop, is in control of that show. Their incorrect cars regularly win over more correct cars. I have an AACA Grand National and First place Mopar Nats 69 road runner convertible. I beat a "Highest scoring 69 hemi road runner ever judged at Carlisle" Totally Auto restored car. It had at least 7 incorrect non original problems with the car. So, come to either the Mopar Nats in Columbus, Aug. 8-10 or come to any AACA event and you will have a much better experience. Also go to www.moparts .com for help with your car. Great site to meet fellow moparites!
