Say Good-bye to a wonderful Holiday

Recommended Posts

Last night at 11:45 PM, my parents and I were returning from a wonderful day of fireworks in the 69 Olds 98 when we were rear ended by a drunk teen driver. No one was hurt for which we are very thankful, but the Olds is totalled. I will not know if I will get the $3500 value or not but that really means little. A beautiful old warrior is gone. Thanks to all of you on the OCA who have helped me to keep the car a charished part of my life. That means a great deal to me.

Thank you, Steve. I am very thankful no one was hurt...especially the young man and his dog who hit me. He is 18, has 3 accidents on record and now a DUI on a fourth. I felt terrible for his Dad who came and checked on my parents and I. The loss of my car was sad; the loss of a beautiful example of a '69 Holiday Coupe was terrible. I tried my best to avoid the problem but I failed. I think my guardian is watching and I am forever thankful.

I pray for that youngman and hope he learns this valuable lesson.

Randall, you're a better man than I am. I'd already have the lawyers on retainer. I have no time or use for a drunk anymore- I've had some really bad experiences with them. And sounds like this one is on his way to habitual offender status. Or does CO have that driver classification?

Sorry to hear the Ninety Eight is gone. I have enjoyed helping you troubleshoot it, and it's well known in OCA that I like Ninety Eights. They're underappreciated.

Randall, terribly sorry to hear of your loss. Glad no one was hurt...physically. I recently suffered my own loss at the hands of a fool who rear-ended my 1990 Olds 88 Royale coupe (see attached pic above). I am still waiting to see if the insurance company decides to tell me the car is totalled...I hope not, as the car is a wonderful daily driver and worth far more to me than what the blue book says. I'm not even sure I could find another like it.

Hey David,

yeah I have not been feeling very well, physically or emotionally, but so far it is tolerable.

I will see my doctor about it soon. Both adjusters have seen the car so far. The Hagerty adjuster thinks it can be fixed, which I doubt considering I only covered it to the tune of its original value...about $3500.00...but the State Farm adjuster said he was totalling the car.

So I have no idea what that will mean. The frame up by the driver door is twisted. I hate to lose the car but it would never drive the same. So I think I want another car if I can get enough from then insurance to pay for it and finish some work on the 47. We will see.

I appreciate your help and good wishes. Thank you I am so sorry for the loss of your Olds. I hope that you can get it back to working service. I was floored at the damage your Buick took and still the interior remained safe. I am glad it had the collapsing column. Had this happened in my 47 I am sure at least one of us would be dead.

Randall, I feel your pain. I too lost my project car. Although, not as old as your ride, my 85 LeSabre with 455 Olds engine (yep, the one with the newly worked "C" heads) was totalled about two weeks ago. Little gal ran a stop sign and I "T" boned her. Threw that Toyota Camry across the intersection. I walked away, but both cars were a total loss. I did have the presence of mind to have the car towed to a body shop owned by a good friend. He allowed me to remove the battery, Edelbrock manifold, carb, and radio. I replaced these parts with the original equipment. I would have liked to harvested the engine and trans in hope of finding a similiar car, but there wasn't enough time. The other party's insurance co tried to buy me off for a ridiculous price which I passed on. In the end, I only got $1,600 for a car I know I had more than double than that in.

That is a wonderful Lincoln. I will try and buy a Cadillac, probably a 72 or newer, as a daily driver. I will focus my time and efforts on my 47. It is a shame about your Oldsmobile.

I would get another myself but the 98 was just a serandipitous event.

Randall, there were two beautiful 1970 Ninety-Eights for sale at the Nats- a white coupe and a red convertible, both by same party whom I have known for many years. $6500 on the coupe if you're interested. Cars are in Cincinnati area.

I judged 1961-70 full size this year. There were more of them than I ever remember seeing at a National Meet- 28 registered, 5 show only and two no-shows. Took five of us from 10 am till 4 pm to judge them. Stunning stuff, especially the 1963 98 Custom Sport Coupe and the Holiday Red 1964 Jetstar I, which I really expected to be awarded best of class but the points added up differently. I never tally points when I finish a scoresheet. Check it off and move to the next car. That way it can't be said I loaded the scoresheet.

That sounds like a fun event, Glenn. I am vacilating between a Caddy and no car at all...it depends on what the insurance for the other guy offers. If they do not surpass Hagerty, then I will take the $3500 and sink that into the '47. That should bring the Cadillac into the pink so I can drive it without embarrassing myself or fogging for mosquitos as I drive through town!

Money is getting tighter, as I am sure everyone here can attest to, so I need to be careful. My family just bought a new townhouse in Longmont, about 12 miles north of Erie, here in CO where I will take up permanent residence. I knew the place was a good buy when I spyed a 1947 Chrysler New Yorker in the parking lot. I have to say of the cars I have looked at in the last several days, I honestly do not want anything newer than 72 and even that is stretching things a bit.
