Wanted- Racer/Speedster. Pre-W W II

I am looking for a race car or speedster. Nothing fancy, it could even be just a running chassis/engine that I will have to start with. I want this car because a friend of mine runs a pre-WWII hill climb, and I would love to have a car that could compete in his event (the REALITY checker says therefore I'll only drive it two or three times a year). Because of this, and since the supply is probably very limited, I am more than willing to look at what you?ve got with two or three thoughts, and here they are! 1) Location: New England area preferred, but I?ll travel further if you have some outstanding car. 2) Price: I do have a budget (remember, it?s New England where Yankee has always meant thrift long before the name became a War Between the States thing).3) The Car: If it has some racing history or really looks OUTSTANDING, I may be able to work that Yankee budget issue up a bit (but lets be real, don?t hope for a miracle).Give me a call or an email ?ping? and let me know what you?ve got. I would check the Vintage Racer Website. www.thevintageracer.com. They have a for sale and trade section. Plus THOUSANDS of great pics.

FYI- I just finished my racer, a 60's trevis craft car. What a fun car to drive. Wouldn't sell it for a million bucks.

HI: Is your race car a 4 bar torsion sprint, built by Floyd Travis in Ohio?

If so where do you run it, in the old timers races on dirt? Do you have the past history of it, & where it was raced? A long shot, but, I may know some of the drivers. Thank You Jack

You hit the nail on the head. The car was raced in Central PA, originally owned by Seidel out of Reading, PA. It was the #98 Yankee and the Rebel car. But I painted to like my dad had it, maroon and white #4. 4 bar, raced on dirt but our club runs on dirt or pavement, in and out box with 1 7/8 inch hilborn injection. Plus a halibrand quick change rear. Also has a detachable roll cage.

This is a whole 'nother type of restoring cars. Lots of fun!

Oh yeah, I have always been a racing fan. I lean towards Indy cars but as a foolish young man did a little drag and stock car racing. I wasn't very good! Last year Dave Uilein invited me to the Milwaukee Mile event and I got a ride in one of the Millers....way cool! I have also spent a little time around the Speedway Museum's collection...they weren't running and I was being towed but it was still very, very exciting!

I have been trying to build a replica of a certain Olds brass race car for awhile but still do not have the right stuff to do one. Maybe one day....By the way, were you guys driving a Buick home from the Museum!!

Jesus, Steve, did you have to bring that up! Earl thinks they're God's gif.., uh, great cars. I'll say one thing, it drives good and gets good gas milage since I didn't have to pay for it. "Lets see how fast this thing will go, Earl!" He said something about not seeing that 80 something figure before. Got home quick though. By the way, I'll bet Bob Swanson can help you get anything special you need to finish up the "project". He has a little of everything in his back yard. Looking forward to meeting you, Wayne

HI: When you answered Central Pa. must have been Williams Grove, Seilingsgrove, & Port Royal, mabe Bedford. If so, I would have seen your sprint. Cant place the Maroon & white #4, but has been awhile. Ted Horns old number. Who drove it back then? We had a Travis also. Red white & blue pearl #1. Travis had an enlarged picture of it in his office. Have you meet Lynn Paxton, Harrisburg, Pa area?

He has several restored sprints, including Tommy Hennershtz Miricle Power Offie.

I think its now at Latimere Valley Speedway Museum, outside Harrisburg. He also had a lot of parts for these. If you want his Ph. # send me an e-mail. Jack

Funny that you should mention the Central PA guys and the museum at latimore, I have been working with them for about a year. Our spring fair was rained out but had a couple of cars show up to run. Just a great event for you PA guys. Thay have a cruise-in on friday night and track time on saturday and sundays. Paxton's shop is only about 5 miles from my house, has some nice playtoys in there.

Someone explain what the Milwaukee Mile event is? I am interested in doing some traveling with the car and sounds like a fun trip.

I was already involved with helping on the Pirate project, so that's not the car. Actually there is a large version of it which might have been used for the Vanderbuilt Cup. Has a four cylinder engine.

As far as the Milwaukee event: I believe it is this weekend. Two days of almost unlimited track time, great fellowship and a lot of early race cars of all types. Super pit area that the public can have access too and sometimes get lucky enough to get a ride in one of the two-seaters. I can't find my info, so hopefully someone else will put up the groups info. If you have an early circle track race car, you want to attend this event!

All right, just for you East Coast people I posted a photo of the 1997 Harry A. Miller Meet field at Milwaukee Mile track. See "Other Cars" gallery. The field changes every year, you might see a 12 liter 1908 MORS or a 1950 NOVI and always a gaggle of Millers from the 1920's. I even got a ride in the 1933 Miller FWD car (The first Offie if you read the history books) and that was an experience, it feels twice as fast as it was really going. This year it is July 12 and 13, thats this coming weekend. Wisconsin State Fairgrounds, 84th & Greenfield, Milwaukee, WI, don't hesitate it will be a great time. Stude8

Do you know if they have a cut off year for cars this weekend? I may be able to swing the trip next year but this weekend is cutting it a little toooooo close. Plus I would need to track down some macadum tires. $$$

The invitation says "All pre & Post WWII indy cars, up to and including 1952, with engines in the upright position are invited to attend. The Club is also inviting Indy roadster and laydown cars to again join in the event".

Inquire to Herb Lederer at 708-447-5828 whether your car is acceptable for the event to be sure if it is outside the above outline. I have seen almost anything you can think of in the past 7 events from a 1908 Stoddard Dayton to T Head Mercers to two genuine NOVI's.

Heck, I even got to talk with Duke Nalon! God Bless His Soul. You never know who the gray haired guy next to you might be at the Miller Meet. Stude8
