Seller's Description:

1957 Oldsmobile Golden Rocket 88 4-door Sedan

  • Driven 157,000 miles
  • Manual transmission
  • Exterior color: Green · Interior color: Green

Selling original condition Golden Rocket 88 4 dr sedan I’ve been been working on. This car has no power options with three on the column. I love this car but I now have peripheral neuropathy and without good arm strength and feeling in my upper body and hands it’s becoming more difficult to for me to drive. Everything stick w/cherry bomb style muffler;. All the power train fun done. Runs drives, and stops great. The exterior is in original good condition. interior ok considering it was ignored for a lot of its life. Everything dash wise works except radio and cig lighter. Vacuum wipers work as designed. I will be very open for trade with similar daily condition daily driver 1957 Olds with ps, pb, auto trans which is much easier for me to drive given my neuropathy and coordination. This was a very difficult decision. $18,500 obo. Price very negotiable.

See video of car being driven.

It is the first "photo" in the Facebook ad.

Generally accepted estimates of Oldsmobile stick production in those years is 2% of total.

Approximately 54000 1957 88 4d sedans built. 2% is slightly less than 1100 cars so equipped. Figure 1% survived and maybe ten are left in any condition. This one is pretty nice.

Another case of rarity doesn't necessarily equal desirability, but for the right collector this car is a goldmine.

I might be the odd man out, but if I had a similar condition one with the typical power steering, brakes, and automatic, I’d jump on the trade.  To me, the fact that it’s a manual is pretty cool and makes it a lot more interesting than a typical base sedan.

Another over-priced, base, 12 to 14 mpg, 4-door sedan. Are there lots of buyers out there for similar cars?

They sure seem to be proliferating.

My absolute favorite year and GM car, but front seat interior is shot and the manual trans makes me cross this off my list. If the car has lived it's entire life in a dry California, this would be tempting, as the colors are attractive and IMO this was the best styled car in 1957. Base car with crank windows and manual trans kills it for me.

A base model 88 four door sedan with 157,000 miles on it that has no power options and needing considerable interior work will be a tough sell at that asking price. IMO a late 50s Olds with a stick is certainly unusual but not unheard of. There should be a number of J-2 equipped standard shift 1957 Oldsmobiles still in existence that either came from the factory that way or were converted by gearhead restorers over the years. I think this particular car will only appeal to a more mature audience and those folks will prefer a car with an automatic and more options that's easier to drive and enjoy.
