1949 Olds Thermostat removal

Can you please tell me how to remove the retaining ring to remove original thermostat?

I don't think there's a retaining ring, clean the old gasket off and the whole thermostat should come out in one piece.

I'm with The 55er. No retaining ring involved. Everything looks quite corroded from old, old coolant. You may need to grab hold of the thermostat with a pliers and wiggle the heck out of it, while pulling. Of course, you'll be installing a new thermostat, but I'm assuming that was your intent. Don't be shy in applying a little force. John

Just got it out...yes there was a retaining ring.

If you have a v8 303ci - Napa has them available.

Its a 49 6 cyl

If you can't find a listing online, you may have to take measurements and find one that fits. I had to do this for my 31 Willys a few months ago.
