Are the Big Black '47-'52 Oil Bath Air Filters ALWAYS Hard to Install & Remove?

I have a 1949 Buick Roadmaster with the standard long black filter for the 320 motor.  I have never been able to remove or install it without a lot of banging on it with the heel of my hand, scratching it on the carb body where there is minimal to no clearance, smashing the carb tab, struggling to fit the pole in the hole and general fussing and cussing.  Does everyone have this problem or can they be adjusted/aligned somehow to go on and off more easily?

I considered bending the mounting plate that bolts to the intake manifold but figured I would just make it worse.

The one on my '56 Buick Special came off easy. There was a "wing" bolt that tightened the clamp, so unscrew a turn or two and lift off. Yours has the added silencer section, so it is longer. Oops, didn't see the to '52 comment......

I've never had a problem removing it from my '47 or '49 Roadmasters.  I lift the back up off the carb and slide it back a little and the whole assembly lifts right off.
