1917 model "W"?? Studebaker 4???

Recommended Posts

Went to look at a car in my late friends collection. Ive never heard of a model "W" The things I noticed between my 17 SF 4 and this one that I know of are as follows..

-rear of motor mounts to crank case not to oval "yoke" thing

-jump seats fold into the floor not under the seat

-front passenger bucket seat does not swivel

-there doesnt appear to be a wiring box on the right side of engine (maybe its just gone)

-gas tank in the rear

-it has a front splash pan between frame rails

-no top curtain clips under the door pulls (Im assuming thats what those are)20240127_005108.jpg.1b98a942bf75898396e78fe8fd300dd1.jpg

-robe cord hooks to loop in the center of the seats instead of the little swan

-oil drain plug bottom of pan, needle for level indicator

My friend was extremely knowledgeable. Could it be he was mistaken and his car was a 16?? Any wisdom on this?20240203_124226.jpg.f1f5dd9d1337c11e595e4c503d0eedf4.jpg20240203_121619.jpg.e3a2a8495854ad57369c9f530c48765b.jpg20240203_112344.jpg.0af564d2fb8ebc5875389d92bb29db77.jpg

Series 17 SF export car built out of Walkerville, Ontario. The export cars were often a mix of parts, some of which came from previous models. They used whatever was on hand to build up a car.

Hi

I recognize your late friends car. You must be from Southern Saskatchewan.

You must be a brave soul to take on that project. I have a 17 chassis body from cowl back and roof bow hardware. I'm edmonton, originally for Moose Jaw.

Call me if you like Pat 780 699 5584

Once I get down into the dirt and splinters im finding a lot of difference between series. Is there a chart that explains this? What about Canadian models, other than the "W" for Walkerton. Mr. Quin says my 17 series 18 SF is Canadian. I understand that series overlapped years a bit. I worked in a factory for a couple years and I have a new understanding of organized confusion oh boy im getting dizzy 🤪
