The four new tires may be in great condition, but if they were installed around the time of the engine rebuild they are 45 years old or so…

I thought the same thing, and as a California person I know one thing that attacks rubber is Ozone (a smog component) and this car is in Whittier, birth place of Richard Nixon and a place that the smog from LA goes to hang out.
