Guffin
Is it possible to remove the chrome wheel trim rings on the 18" wheel of a Buick 32-80 without damageing them? The manual says you can take them off with a screwdriver but you can't use them again. I need to sandblast and paint the wheels and want to put back the trim rings. Jan
Guest stude8
Look at the replies to Roadster Rich under changing Chrysler tires on wire wheels. It all applies to your question. Stude8If you use care and gradually remove the ring with several screw drivers working around the rim you be successful and not damage the ring. They are intended to be resused over and over again.http://www.aaca.org/ubbthreads/showflat....rt=1#Post157158
Guffin
Sorry! My question was perhaps not clear. I do not want to remoe a Lock Ring. I want to remove a decoration in the form of a chrome ring pressed on to the wheels, without destroying the rings so I could put them back on. The wheel is drop center. These rings were otions on the wire wheels on Buick of that era. I need to remove the rings to be able to sand blast the wheels.Jan
The Old Guy
The info provided by Stude 8 is correct. The stainless rings can be removed without damaging them by carefully working them with wide screw drivers. The trick is to move things VERY slowly and take your time. i had a 32 90 series for years, and removed the trim rings with no problem
Peter J.Heizmann
Guffin...Joe and Stude8 offer the best route. "Incremental, careful prying, evenly loaded pressure".I have trim rings on a TR6 and have taken them off a few times with no problem.Like prying a paint can lid off without damaging it. Keep working your way around the ring slowly.Regards, Peter J.
1937hd45
Invest in a matched pair of screw drivers or small pry bars, you may want to grind the tips to fit.
