Pete Phillips
I need a spare tire carrier for the 1923 model 35 that I am working on. It bolts to the top of the gas tank shield, and I"m guessing that several other years would be the same and that a 1923 six-cylinder spare tire carrier would probably work. 23 inches from the right-hand mount holes to the left-hand mount holes. dibarlaw
Pete: The 1923 4cyl would be similar to what is on my 1925 Standard. My Hershey find for a 22" rim. It has the wings that mount to the brackets. Local 1923 4 cyl. coupe. 1923 6 cyl. I would show you an image from the 1923 Parts book but my scanner is giving me problems. I believe the big 6s are very different. The big 6 and my Master may be the same as they have these bars that mount to the heavy gas tank shroud. dibarlaw
Pete: I won a battle with the new printer/scanner. Part # 159180 is for models 34-36. Another part #175850 is for models 35 and 37. But this illustration shows the "wings". Note, early style with tail light mounting on the right. Later production centered as shown on previous photos. There are only 7 different tire carrier assemblies for the big 6 cars!
Pete Phillips
Thanks for the illustrations, Larry. This '23 4-cylinder that I"m working on has 19" rims. I am guessing that someone replaced the wheels and rims many years ago. BCA Judging Manual says it should have 23" rims & wheels.
dibarlaw
Correct. Just like they cut down my 22" rear carrier in the center bar and the top outer carrier and pulled in the ring to be able to get 21" rims on. You may still have to get a 21" ring and do some custom fabrication. More likely to be compatible with the wing type mount. There are many out there from 1926-1928s What the wings look like. 16 rivets hold everything together! Then find a rear mount for a 1930 since they took 19" rims. Just need the ring. I believe the wings could be mounted on the inside of the gas tank valance brackets with spacers as needed. Brian_Heil
1923 6 cylinder tire carrier mounts to the outer edges of the two rear frame horns and is a beast of a riveted structure. It's where I loop my tuggem' strap when I pull someone.
Brian_Heil
And for the new readers, very few 4 cylinder and 6 cylinder vehicle parts interchange in this time period. Not just the engine but practically everything. It's like Buick had an infinite tooling budget and made all the 4 cylinder parts ~75% the size of the 6 cylinder parts or a lighter different design. Piece cost being the driving factor. 4 cylinder cars have a typical rear leaf set up with a rear perch and shackle, the 6's have the massive rear cantilever springs. I did find the clutch discs are common but the 4 uses less of them. Edited November 2, 2022 by Brian_Heil (see edit history)
