Oil filter on 1947 Chrysler

 over the years I have changed oil And filter with no problems until today.  The original filter system is on the car.  After changing the oil I put the gasket supplied down first and then the large oil ting on top. It started to leak around the edges of the filter canister once I started the engine. I have had it of an on and can’t seem to stop the oil from leaking out?.

any ideas of what I might be doing wrong

Is the old gasket still in the canister?  Thinking there might be two gaskets in there.

Thanks for your reply , I did take out the gasket as I pulled out the old filter,

Seems like it’s a gasket not seating or the filter is not seating all the way down or it’s too tall for the canister.  Can you compare old filter to new filter?

From my experience(s) the gasket goes on/into the lid - not on the housing.

Also, there should be a spring under the lid that the bolt goes through.

I want to thank everyone for there reply’s to the oil filer on my 1947 Chrysler.

I finally resolved the problem, as some one had mentioned “maybe the filter is to high”, the fram no longer had the filter to fit the 47 but the local supplier gave me an option of a different make that would work?

The height appeared to be equal but it was a hair out just enough to cause the problem.
