Note: This is a synopsis of the Frontenac history found in the book:  Cars of Canada by Hugh Durnford and Glenn Baechler, pages 181-187 and 351-352.

The 1931-1933 Frontenac was the product of Dominion Motors Ltd of Leaside, Ontario, Canada that was a corporation spun-off from the former Durant Motors of Canada as the American operations of the Durant empire were spiralling down in the late 1920's-early 1930's.  Powered by Continental engines, as were all Durants, the 1931 E6-18 shared greatly with the concurrent Durant.  With the 1932 failure of Durant, they transitioned to the DeVaux-Continental for their Series 6-70 and 6-85 then onto the 1933 Continental Beacon and Flyer on which to base their 1933 Frontenac C-400 and C-600 cars.  This 1933 Frontenac is based on the Continental Flyer.  The largest Frontenac Ace, which was a re-badged Continental Ace were all imported from the U.S.   Along with Frontenac manufacture, Dominion Motors Ltd. obtained the Canadian rights to assemble REO Flying Clouds for 1932-'33.  REO maintained its own sales and service organization.  As with the Durant, DeVaux and Continental efforts after the onset of the economic Depression, it all came to naught.

Very Interesting! I'm very aware of Frontenac as the company formed by Louis Chevrolet in 1914 with backing by Albert Champion after he left Durant's GM, but I hadn't heard of this car. Is there a relationship? Are they the same company?

Leif:

No connection between the two uses of the Frontenac name is cited.  Dominion Motors Ltd. named the cars after Count Frontenac, a governor of New France "a man who caught the vision of needs and demands of Canada, a man of amazing foresight, leadership and strength."
