Plus getting the missing end correct. Most likely good I have a machinest mentality about this. Although a quick and dirty framer would have knocked it together already. We had one in the neighborhood that made a lot of mistakes. I learned what not to do just watching him.

I’ve been rewooding 30’s Buicks for a while now and completely agree with you.  The ash wood is almost never intact at all while the poplar can be quite sound unless in a place that frequently got wet. Actually, I have found very little ash to begin with.  
 

I have a sawmill and I use white oak and cypress. I have access to ash but all that I have sawn has been destroyed by powder post beetles.
