PROPOSAL TO PENNA PACKARD OWNER IN THE PACKARD FORUM

Guest

Recommended Posts

To all the fellows in here that own Packards that live in Penna. Might it be possible some time during the summer, to meet at a central location and have an informal get together. You wouldn't have to bring your Packard to this meet, but I am sure it would be nice just sit down break bread and talk about Packards. Let me know what you think of this idea.

Might be a logistics problem, but if we can set a date soon enough so we know it doesn't conflict with other planned outings, I'm all for it. I don't want to drive to Philadelphia, though, even if W.C did like it. I'm from Pittsburgh.

A Pennsylvania Packard meet sounds great! Like Randy B., I'm from Pittsburgh and favor not going to Philadelphia. As for time and place - the Pittsburgh Vintage Grand Prix might be suitable. There are scads of antique and classic cars o n display as well as the races themselves. If that is too far for Philadelphians, Carlisle might be a decent compromise.

Carlisle or somewhere in the center would be a good compromise. I don't have anything against pittsburgh, but like you guys, I don't want to go 300 miles in the other direction (I'm right outside of Philly). However, I'll be in Pittsburgh at least one weekend in July for a graduate class I'm taking at Pitt via distance ed, so what's another weekend?

When I started this thread I didn't think there wouldbe much responce. Being as I had a good idea as to where everybody is located I was think of central southern location. These could include, Harrisburg,Hershey, or Carlisle. Brian I know any of these locations would be a real long drive for you.. Maybe a sunday would be best. I am open for comments on the proposed locations I have listed.

I can take care of your "400" with a phone call. A very good friends house is so close to Fair Ground, you can almost touch it. All his neighbors get free passes for all shows on account of parking. If you go, and would like, my friend would keep your Packard safe. Just let me know. Even better for you if you like to shoot pool. Jack

I have a place in mind that we maybe able to get together at. I have been kickng this around for a couple of days. There is a a museum in Mechanicsburg Pa. Its the Eastern Museum of Motor Racing located near Harrisburg. This place is opened on saturdays and sundays from 10 AM till 4 PM. Why couldn't we all meet here and go for a tour of the museum. Then afterward maybe a small a picnic in the parkng lot. Everybody body bring something and share it all, and have a shot the bull time about Packards. I really don't know if some of you want to drive your Packards that far. If you don't bring your regular set of wheels. COMMENTS PLEASE

Sounds good to me. Safe parking, other people who are interested in great cars, and no worries about parking, vandleism, etc. If for any reason that doesn't work, we might piggy back on one of the shows at Carlisle. That would permit parking on the field, not outside, in an area reserved for Packards. I've been there several times with both the Saab Club and the Specialty Car Club of Western PA. The Museum sounds best for our first meeting, but think BIG. Maybe we'll have too many cars for the museum's lot in a few years.

If this all the repsonce I am going to get to my last proposal about where to have this. Its not worth the effort to try and advance this along. If any of have a better a idea than what I proposed lets here it.

Bernardi & Brian: I want to thank both of you for interest in what i proposed. Brian I know this would have been along trip for you. I could understand it if you hadn't wanted to come. To the others your lack of real interest in this is very disapointing. I know that a good time would have been had by every one.

FOR THOSE INTERESTED: Are there any dates in August that would interfer with other things that might be in the planning. I and proposing those interested meet at the museum at 12:00 PM August 3rd 2003. It would be nice to know in the next two weeks if this date is agreeable, and get a possible number of people who might attend. The reason that I ask this is that Jack Harlin knows some of the people at the museum and is willing to contact them as to what we are planning to do.

Pac 53:

I understand your frustration. Been there, done that, don't want the t-shirt for it. I and my wife are always interested in Packard gatherings. However we never commit to anything that long a distance until a week before because we never know if the monetary sitation will allow it and we don't know if work schedules will allow it. It is roughly 15-16 hours to just about anywhere in PA. We have been to Perrysburg, Warren, and Carlisle. If you want you can count us as maybes if all else falls into place. I know that's not much, but I believe there is interest out there. I myself am currently involved in trying to get together something very similar to this in northern Florida(if you want you can come to that), but until I can get a definite place, date and time, I am not going to worry about response. My advice is go forward find a place, set a date and time, then if, a week before the event if you have had no definite commitments you can cancel. I have had to do that on at least 1 occasion and I only had to worry about people coming from 90 miles away and I could not get more than 4 people to commit and 2 of those would not drive their Packards. So I said &^#$#&* forget it.

Paul: Thanks for the information. It wouldn't matter what date I set for this event, there is bound to be a car show some place. Feature car there is Ford, which are a dime a dozen. I would rather have the chance to see a gtoup of Packards and talk to the owners than see Fords. The date stands as is. I know one person will be there on August 3rd that is me, even if no one else shows up. This could be the start of something. Hope to see you there.

It is NOT JUST FORDS. The show brings in around 800 cars on FRI. and around 1300 Sat. and 1200 Sun. NO streetrods, and usually pretty many Packards, along with Auburns ,Cords and a fairly large flea market. I wish you luck and have a GREAT time.

Paul is right, I've been to the Awkschtfest and there are no customs, it's an excellent show with tons of cars. Last year there were at least 15-20 packards there, including 6 or more 55-56's. Last year's feature car was Nash. I really want to come to a meeting of the "Packard Minds" of the forum as suggested, but I know I can't be there because I will be at the Awkschtfest for the Saturday show.

TO ALL THAT ARE INTERESTED: I got an email today in responce to a letter I had written last week. The people who run the the Eastern Museum of Motor Racing have approved my request to them. The meeting of us Pakcard Nuts will take place August 3rd 2003. They will provide us with a picnic area and provide us with a special tour of the museum. THE PERSON THAT DESERVES A GREAT DEAL OF THANKS FOR BRINGING THIS THING TOGETHER IS JACK HARLIN. Jack it turns out called some of his old racing freinds whom help run the museum. He contacted Lyn Paxton and got the ball rolling for me. As the time gets closer I will try to get an idea of what time we should try to be at the museum. I hope that some people will be able to attend.

Hello to the Group:

If anyone is looking for an excuse for a fall drive + a chance to display their car + more to do than just look at old cars, consider the Belvidere Victorian Days, September 2003. It is an easy drive from Philadelphia, Harrisburg, Stroudsburg and southern New York state. In 2002, there were over a 100 cars in attendance, eight of which were Packards, 1926 - 1950s. See the following web site:

THANKS for the credit John. It took a great deal of my time to offer a littel help. I MADE ONE PHONE CALL TO LYNN PAXTON, his Wife takes care of reservations, and they took it from there along with you. Just happened you picked a place, that I knew about.

Lynn is well known beyond local area. Won many sprint car races, track championships, & a clean, no dirty driving, to win, record. He owns some restored famous race cars so he has helped save some history, also. He would make a good PACKARD owner. Work on him John, mabe he will buy one, HA Jack

Thanks Randy for inviting us. We are still Pa. people,& miss it.

Its just about 1000 miles too far for us. Ken & I could have followed you to Altoona, & have Burket meet us & go through Rail Road Musuem, on your return trip, home. That would be worth the trip, & we could visit with our friends, all in one. Jack

Packard 53-

Packards International has a Midwestern Chapter that seems to be centered a little west of Pittsburgh. Although I'm a member, I have never been able to attend one of their events (just retired last week, so that may change). May I issue an invitation to them to join us?

My wife and I will be returning from North Carolina on Aug 2, in a non-Packard. I expect to join the crowd, but not in the proper transportaton.

I particularly look forward to meeting Randy Berger. He both lives in my neck of the woods and has a car I've always admired. Some day I hope to "upgrade" from a '55 400 to a '56 400.

Congratulations on having things come together so nicely! With a definite date and a location that will welcome us, several more "Packard nuts" may join us.

Bernardi: Please feel free to issue an invite to anyone you would like. The more people there attending that enjoy or own a Packard is fine. I also will not being driving my Packard to the event sad to say. I stll have alot or to do my Packard yet. I really can't blame anyone who has to drve any distance, not wanting to bring their Packard. I must confess that I might be driving to the event in my Chevelle. If I do it would be the first in many years that I have driven it over 50 miles in one day.

Jack, we'll take a group picture - even if the group is only three. I'll be glad to send you pictures just to make you jealous since you can't make it here. How's the gauges and all working? Ken said he had to mount a big magnifying glass over the oil gauge face - is that true?

Thanks on getting me some pictures, sounds great, & yes I am jealous.

Hope you all have a good time & nice weather.

I wish Ken would learn to keep his mouth shut, but thats asking too much.

The gauges installed & all 3 working. Hooked the gauge lights up to glove box switch, so opening door turns them on. Water temp. 160, & after ideling 45 minutes, 42 lbs oil pressure. That was a happy number to see, with 73,000 miles on it. Thanks again, Jack
