series14
I am looking for a good method to check taped threads in antique engine parts during an engine rebuild. Up to this point I would chase all the threads and to a test torque with a test spacer in place of the engine component before I do final assembly. It isn't always fool proof, and was trying to figure out if there is a better method to check if threads in an old engine block are good before I do final assembly? Thanks
Stude Light
Make sure you use a chasing tap and not a standard thread cutting tap.
Frank DuVal
These people: https://jawco.com/collections/rethreading-tap-die-and-file-sets They have been around a long time, just sold through vendors or private label like Snap-On. Now open to direct sales on the internet.
series14
I do use chasing taps, but i think the hole is warn and may have internal rust pits. I was just trying to see if there is a more reliable method for checking threaded holes for unseen damage.
