Matt Harwood
The front-wheel-drive system is very durable and well-engineered. In fact, GM engineers called the chain that drives the shaft to the front-mounted transmission the "indestructible chain." The transmission is a TH400 in a different case, and the TH400 is the best automatic GM ever built. CV joints can be an issue simply due to age, but remanufactured axles are readily available and not terribly difficult to install. I can guarantee that the A/C doesn't work or if it does, it won't for long. Then the finicky electrical stuff like power windows and locks may be a problem, but those are solvable issues. They rust in the usual areas: rockers, trunk, quarters, base of the roof, passenger-side floorboards. The hardware is overall very reliable and robust and these are good cars to drive. I think the '68 is the one to own--the '67 used the 429 and I'm not as big a fan of that engine, which always feels fragile and brittle. The 472/500 was a torque factory and very durable. I've been wanting a hidden headlight Eldo and I suppose now is the time to buy one. I expect they'll be like the '65 Riviera GS that I always wanted and assumed I could easily buy when I was ready. Prices will inevitably go up and the car I always assumed I could pick up cheap will no longer be cheap. I'm still going to hold out for a triple black one, though. Steve_Mack_CT
Thanks Matt, great info, and I am appreciating these more and more. Could replace a slabside Lincoln as a favorite of the era, especially if FWD works right. But we could be competing for the same car now!! 🤔😁 Edited August 18, 2020 by Steve_Mack_CT (see edit history)
JamesR
These really were one of the best looking '50's-60's Caddys, IMHO. They don't look bad from any angle. By the mid 70's most Cadillacs (or any big GM cars) had too much (of what I'd call) architectural styling, but the late 60's Eldorados had just the right amount.
