wowo
Hi, I have to overhaul the gear box on my 37 Special. Both synchro drums are showing wear and are not doing their job properly anymore which doesn't come as a surprise to me, given the noise it made when shifting gears. Any suggestions what to do about? Anyone has some spare NOS part for sale? On Bobs Automobilia I only see one of the two drums available but it says they are for 1939 and later models. Might not be correct for 1937 tranny. On Ebay there is one for sale but $175 hurts..... thanks Martin
Ben Bruce aka First Born
Martin, try DME, in KY. 606 237 6648. Dennis has a lot of parts. According to him, the differences in some years is the angle of the brass. I have one that is marked with a pen as '38-'39. Part # 1305659. If it can be determined to be correct for '37, $110.00 shipped. Ben 4110
wowo
thanks Ben, I will contact DME. I already sourced the rear drum for second gear now with part number 1297852. What is the correct part number for the front drum which I still need? As far as I can see Chevrolet, Oldsmobile, Buick and Pontic all used the same transmission somewhere between 1932 and 1938. 1939_Buick
Have also been told of the difference in angles. Know of person who had a sychro machined to the correct angle (for a 1939 S40) Some, but not all, parts are also used with Olds & Ponti. {I have an Olds parts manual}. No idea about Chev Also try NW Transmission parts. Have more parts than indicated on the web site http://nwtparts.com/index.php?route=product/category&path=60 http://nwtparts.com/index.php?route=information/contact From 1928-52 Parts book (part BB) Group 4.384 Drum, Transmission Gear Synchronizing Part 553439 1934-35 S40 S50; 1936-37 S40 (3rd speed) 1297852 1934-35 S40 S50; 1936-37 S40 (2nd speed) 1305659 1938-39 S40 (2nd & 3rd speed) 1314659 1940-41-42 S40 S50; 1946-47-48-49-50-51-52 S40 S50 (2nd & 3rd speed) Image is for 1940, but close to other years Edit: found 1936-37 images. Those C springs 4.397 are important Edited August 15, 2020 by 1939_Buick (see edit history)
wowo
thanks, yes that seems to be the correct parts number for the front (clutch side) drum: 553439. What I read from that old parts book is that until 1937 front drum was different to rear drum. From 1938 onwards both drums were the same but with new parts numbers = probably not fitting anymore into the older transmissions
1939_Buick
Buick had a nasty habit of changing some parts numbers/detailed design year to year, even if they look the same. Edit https://buickfarm.com/component/redproductfinder/?view=findproducts&redform[1][tags][0]=14&redform[1][typeid]=1&redform[2][tags][0]=101&redform[2][typeid]=2&redirect=1 But at times I have noticed a discrepancy between part number, text descriotion and what is shown to be for Edited August 16, 2020 by 1939_Buick (see edit history)
