Mark Wetherbee
Agree it’s a diverter from foot board heat to defrost. Figuring out what for will be a bigger challenge... Edited May 7, 2020 by Mark Wetherbee (see edit history)

54vicky
from the rust I think it is part of the breather assembly (choke)heater used in early smog system the shape looks like early 70s ford here is a picture of what I think it resembles Edited May 17, 2020 by 54vicky (see edit history)
dustycrusty
the July issue of Hemmings Classic Car has an article on a 1957 Lincoln.......... This is not a picture from the H.C.C. article, just a similar Googly Image, but the picture of the engine in the Hemmings article clearly shows the same articulation lever that is just visible in the crook of the "elbow" below the valve cover in this picture and in Harvest's O.P. That lever leads to the internal thermostatic bellows that would open when cold and expand under heat to close off the metal flap that diverted hot air off of the manifold into the intake air stream (at least for a year or two...). dustycrusty
Another view of a differnt 1957 Lincoln showing the linkage a bit more clearly, the lever attachment point to the base of the thermostatic control and the support bracket (the cadium nut near the air hose clamp).
