I have a 1937 Buick in pieces which I managed to put back together some what, I am missing the clamps that hold the center moulding  to the cowl and rad support, what I have compiled is that it is a 5 piece clamp setup each side the two metal brackets and the nut , bolt and lock washer  . will this set up work on my 37-40?  Are all models the same? Is there something that stops the hood from sliding to far forward? any help please. ( gouldcape@aol.com )

 From what I recall when I had to remove the hood to re-core the radiator there was a simple clip with a threaded stud. The pain was getting around the radio to loosen and then reattach the nut under the cowl. I always have to give my hood a shove back before I close it. Mostly due to slight misalignment from the nose piece/grille locating pins.

Hi Bob.  Here are some photos of my hood clamps.  Hope it helps!

First one is the all the rods attached.  The second shows where the REAR hold down screw is under the dash.  The next shows the three washers that were under the hold down bolt (in the photo) to line up the hood.

Great photos. I happen to have my hood off now for water pump, intake and exhaust manifold work among other things. I have a question you might be able to help me with. On the outside of the two hook shaped brackets that hold the hood support rods in place above the radiator there are two brackets (one on each side) that are (one is) visible in your 4th picture just above the Lockport, NY embossing on the upper tank. You can see the nut that holds the bracket and rearmost portion of the bracket. It seems there should be some sort of pad or cushion type attachment to the front bottom of the bracket that would  rest on the top tank for more support. If there is I haven't found anything like that repopped.

Awesome photos, thanks. You are doing an amazing job with the car. My car didn't have the piece of windlace or whatever it is called across the top of the nose cone. Will have to look at it closer tomorrow. OK, the first photo where you have the wrench and screwdriver removing the bracket, that is exactly the bracket I am referring to. I think I found out today that that bracket should be brazed to the top tank and to remove the radiator you would have to remove the bolt and nut to release the bracket (radiator). There are 3 pimples on the top of the radiator that seem to line up with 2 of the holes at the forward most part of the bracket. I can even see now a "shadow" on the top tank and a slight flattening where the brackets would have contact with the top tank. That seems to be a weak design that  would almost certainly break free with vibration of the car. Do you confirm my description?

P.S. It looks like your brackets are still attached to the radiator in your last photo.

You take some great pictures! That explains it, the brackets are attached to the radiator. Mine were not. The radiator is back in as of this morning and I just put the brackets where they were. They don't line up vertically real well with the radiator so I think they would have added a lot of angst to get the 4 side bracket bolts and these two to all line up vertically and horizontally. Had a bit of a time doing it without the brackets attached as I had the radiator re cored. Don't see much advantage for the brackets as the 4 bolts hold the radiator quite well. What do you think?

I'm reusing the original ones that came out.  I wire wheeled them clean, painted them with high heat black and they are going back in.  I actually ordered and received the ones from McMaster Carr and I really dont like them at all.  They look like thin fender washers and look kinda out of place.  So I spent the time cleaning up the originals.

Thanks for the information. My car has what seems to be the originals. Corroded and not much or any cupping is left with them. Seems like they might not be what they used to be and everyone says stay away from flat washers. Yes, the thinness bothered me as well. I can fit the bigger washers from Bob's with a slight amount of grinding on the manifold. Dave T. said to grind and go with them. What to do??
