Claes Rocklin
I am restoring a 1920 Stephens. I am in need of a better differential with pinion and ring gear. The rear axle is a Stan Par.
nickelroadster
In your pictures I see Brown-Lipe on what looks to be the pinion gear. I would suspect that they made the internals. I have never heard of Stan-Par. Any patent numbers on the unit that you could look up? We could use a little better picture of the rear end chunk. Claes Rocklin
Yes, the internal gears were made by Brown-Lipe- Chapin that was a well known manufacturer of transmissions. The Stephens Motor Works used front and rear axles from Stan Par in 1920 only. The following year, 1921, the Stephens cars were equipped with axles from Timken. Have done som research and I found just a few car manufacturers that used the Stan Par axles: Sayers Six, Bidddle and Stephens. There were so many brands on the market so I guess there must have been more than these car manufacturers that used the Stan Par axles, but these axles were not very common. If my search for the missing parts fails I must find a similar rear axle.
nickelroadster
It sounds like you are in for a long, long search. I think you need to get very lucky or start looking for another rear end that will fit. You were in one of the Scandinavian countries were you not? here is wishing you god luck! JFranklin
You may need the services of a good machine shop or find gears that can be modified if necessary.
