Pull engine with out without tranny?

Getting ready to pull the 228 out of my Desoto. The tranny bolts look to be a bear to get to plus the factory shop manual is pretty useless in describing removal of major parts (remove nuts connecting transmission to engine and remove). Great, that helps alot haha. Is there enough room in there to get the engine/tranny out as a unit? I do have a tilt attachment for the engine lift.

If the frame crossmember that supports the transmission is removable it is relatively easy to access the transmission to bell housing bolts.  Support the engine, remove the crossmember, slightly lower the engine / transmission while still bolted together and disassemble the transmission from the engine.  You can sometimes remove the engine while the transmission remains in the vehicle.  It is much easier to line up the transmission input shaft  if the transmission is installed after the engine is reinstalled rather than trying to install the input shaft while installing the engine.  Good luck with your project.

I'm sure MOPAR guys will be able to tell you the best way to remove the engine and transmission together.  I would try removing the radiator and the core support (if possible).  You will have to move the engine and transmission forward to allow the tail shaft of the transmission to clear the crossmember. You may have to change the able of the unit as you remove it  Remember both units together will be heavy so be careful when using the engine hoist.  It will take some trial and error but it should be possible.  Be sure to get input from the MOPAR guys before you attempt this.  I'm sure someone has been there before.

It may be possible to pull engine and trans together, barely, and not smash anything if you are real careful. But the factory recommends removing the trans first because it is easier. You will have to take off the driveshaft, speedo cable, handbrake cable in either case and remove the mount bolts. So taking out 4 more bolts and sliding it back should not be a big deal.

Steps in engine removal - 1939 to 1941 DeSoto from Motor's Manual - 8th Edition ( 1935-1942)

To remove the engine with clutch and transmission, take off the hood and front bumper and after draining the cooling system, remove the upper and lower water hose.

Remove: the radiator shell, core, fenders and sheet metal as a  unit, propeller shaft, and, if equipped with overdrive, remove the solenoid coil from the overdrive adapter plate. On models with power shift, remove the vacuum control at the transmission.

Disconnect: fuel pump flexible line, exhaust pipe at manifold, oil gauge line at oil gauge flexible tube, throttle and choke controls, heat indicator tube and bulb at the cylinder head, starter cable at starter, coil wires at coil, speedometer cable at transmission, battery ground cable, wires at generator, hand brake cable at brake band, gearshift and selector rods or cable at transmission and the clutch pedal linkage.

Remove: crankcase ventilator breather pipe, front and rear engine support bolts, and after loosening the engine splash pans at both sides, lift out the power plant assembly.

Installation may be made by reversing the above operations.

Steps in transmission removal

It is not necessary to remove the floor boards. (1) On overdrive units drain the lubricant from both the transmission and overdrive. (1) Raise the car at the front and place jacks under the lower control arms. (3) On cars without overdrive disconnect the propeller shaft at the front (4) For cars with overdrive disconnect the front and rear universal joints. (5) On all cars if the transmission is to be disassembled (6) Uncouple the speedometer cable (7) Disconnect the hand brake cable at the brake band (8) On overdrive loosen the companion flange nut. units, remove the wires and take off the solenoid unit. (9) Detach the gearshift control rods from the transmission (10) If equipped with power shift, remove the vacuum and air hose and take off the gearshift selector rod (11) On overdrive units, disconnect the overdrive control cable clevis at the lever on the overdrive case (12) Remove the nuts from the studs which fasten the transmission to the clutch housing (13) unscrew the two upper studs and install pilot studs in their place (14) Slide the transmission straight back on the pilot studs until the main drive gear is free of the clutch disc hub (15)  Lower the assembly to the floor.

Assemble in the reverse order, being sure to use the pilot studs to guide the assembly safely into place. See the Gearshift chapter for service instructions.

Some of the above does not make sense but it is as written ........

Hope this helps .......
