'53 Special Color?

Recommended Posts

I'm trying to determine if the color of this Special is factory, or non-factory. I bought it from a friend, but forgot to take a picture of the trim tag (doh!). I haven't picked it up yet and it's 2 hours away. From what I can see from the color chart, it seems like maybe Ridge Green? At least that might look closest.

It is not any one of three OEM greens that were a standard paint color choice for any 1953 Buick Special 40 Series Model and I seriously doubt that it was a special order. If it was a special order for an extra charge, it would be noted on the fifth line on your BODY BY FISHER Number Plate. It would read: PAINT NO. BX (followed by a code number). BX = special order.

Ridge Green was not a metallic paint. There were only two 2-tone combinations with a white top and a green bottom: Paint Code #80 = Majestic White over Balsam Green and Paint Code #84 = Majestic White over Pinehurst Green. All one color Ridge Green would show a Paint Code #60 on your Number Plate. Yours is most likely a non-Buick Apple Green paint that matches who knows what.

To give you a better idea, here's a link for a knockout air-conditioned 1953 Buick 76R that looks like a Majestic White over a Ridge Green paint job.

  • 2 weeks later...

- 1953 Buick Paint Code 59 = the same color Tyler Blue for the upper and lower body.

- For 1953, all Buick Paint Codes were a two-digit number. Each of the 18 two-tone color combinations, for an extra charge, had their own two-digit code number.

- 1953 Buick Paint Code 69 = a Shell Grey upper (top only on 1953's) and Tyler Blue lower body. Note that the color separation point on 1953 two-tones was NOT at the sweep spear trim.

- There were no other two-tone options using Tyler Blue for 1953 Buicks.

Hope this answers your question.
