1962 Oldsmobile Starfire

Recommended Posts

Not mine. I am passing the info on as I am an Olds lover and this car is too good to pass up and needs a good home!

1962 Oldsmobile Starfire Evansville, IN

I am listing this for my father, Jerry Korff

Beautiful and correct Chariot Red paint. All chrome replated and stainless polished. Brand new $2500 JASWEST aluminum panels. Lotsa NOS parts including turn signal lenses, reverse lamp lenses, power antenna, shift knob button, front and rear spiral shocks, resonators, and mufflers. Beautifully installed and correct exhaust that has the correct downturn tips like 1962 had. It is quiet like it should be, runs and idles smooth. Correct size and type BF Goodrich Silvertown tires that belong on it. Best of class winner at Oldsmobile Club of America national meet in Bowling Green Kentucky. It always wins some sort of an award at the local shows it attends.

It runs and drives out great. The brakes stop good and true with a good firm pedal. The transmission shifts out as well as any one of those slim jim transmissions can except that if you go over 65 mph is likes to shift back down for some reason. We live in Evansville Indiana. Dad drove it to Bowling Green Kentucky and the National Antique Oldsmobile Club meet in Columbus Indiana with no problems. It has a brand new battery in it plus a fresh oil change so it is ready to go.

$19,500

Call Jerry Korff at 812 459-1438 for further details.

Would anyone knowledgeable about the infamous "SlimJim" transmission care to speculate on why the car would downshift above 65MPH? I imagine that could be a dangerous event on a busy freeway and hard on the driveline as well in any situation. I love these 1962 Starfires otherwise. I recall wanting one back in 1962 when I was in high school. This is an exceptional lovely car and well worth the money IMHO I doubt it will remain unsold for long.

I bet the transmission issue is a linkage adjustment. The amount of throttle opening required to maintain 65 MPH is probably sufficient to activate the kick-down. I don't know if there's a vacuum component of the mechanism or if it's purely mechanical, but my guess is that it could be adjusted.

Dave Yaros, if you have a way to reach the seller, I would strongly recommend that he get that issue fixed before selling the car. It's going to be a HUGE question mark for any buyer and will likely warrant a substantial discount, probably far in excess of the cost of repairs. An unknown like this will make even a very nice car (which this certainly appears to be) virtually unsellable. My gut says that it's in the right neighborhood with the price, but not with a wonky transmission, even if it's an easy fix because buyers will be spooked. Get it checked out and repaired and I bet the car sells quickly.

Hope this helps!

I second what Matt Harwood said. I don't have a '62 Olds but have/have had several slimjim '61-'63 big Pontiacs with that trans and there is a rod on them from the lower throttle arm on the carb to an idler which then has a rod that goes down to the side of the trans. If that rod were adjusted too short the Pontiacs would do exactly what this Olds is doing.

I would certainly be interested in buying this car if that transmission problem was solved. Not that I would do much highway driving above 65 since our area highways have a limit of 55MPH but my concern is that there might possibly be more to this than a linkage adjustment. It seems logical that a linkage problem is the fix but this should be addressed before I would make an offer.
