sherwood3333
can anyone tell me how to remove the steering column from a 49 gear box, I need to remove it so I can get the body off, thanks
Bleach
I'm sure the shaft is part of the box like it was on my '51 Cadillac. You have to raise the car high enough to be able to drop it down.
dan at larescorp
DJ is correct. The input shaft goes from the worm gear inside the box all the way up to the steering wheel.
60FlatTop
Here's a tip since those worm gear and shafts assemblies are getting hard to find. I bought a new one for a 1960 Ford pickup I had once. The shaft turned out to be a little longer than the original. I used a 1 1/2" or 1 3/4" exhaust connector to lengthen to outer column. It didn't make a big difference but the truck steered good with the new worm.Bernie
MikesWoodieWorld
Every time I pull a body off, I just remove the steering wheel and thread the column through the access panel hole on the floor.Sometimes there is even more clearance if the floors are rusty!! As I raise the body up, I just roll the frame forward...it has always worked for me.Same way in reverse for replacing the body back down.

Ok, so the steering column stays on the Gear box and you take off steering wheel and remove column thru firewall to front of the car, right
